This sets off a chain of events which bring about unexpected results. GREEN RIVER Written by Won-Kyeong Lee. THE RED BICYCLE Written by Jude Isabella. Ages 7+ Leo rode his red bicycle everywhere - to school, the swimming pool and football practice. Leo was sad to have outgrown his bike, but found out he could donate it to someone who could really use it. The children see a landslide on the railway tracks and they decide they have to do something or the train will crash. Bobbie and her siblings want to make Perks happy on his birthday. Since they do not have money, they ask everyone in the neighbourhood to gather their presents and blessings for his birthday. Bobbie tells Perks about what people say about him. Perks is happy in the end.

THE STRAY Written by Dick King Smith. Ages 7+ Henrietta Hickathrift is 75 and bored of the old people’s home where she lives. She runs away to the seaside to start a new life, but she runs out of money on the first day. Luckily, the Good family find her and decide to adopt her as a stray.

THIS MORNING I MET A WHALE Written by Michael Morpurgo. Ages 7+

At sunrise, young Michael spots a whale on the shores of the Thames and thinks he must be dreaming. But the creature is real and it has a message for him - one that only an open-minded child can deliver to the rest of the world. The whale warns that the earth's days are numbered and that humans must put right the damage they are doing.

I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS Written by Michael Morporgo. Ages 7+ In the local library, a boy becomes captivated by the stories he hears read aloud by the librarian, who sits astride a model unicorn. She tells them a story of when war came and a library was burned, and of how the children were able to rescue their beloved books and resurrect the library.

THE PROMISE Written by Nicola Davies. Ages 7+

On a mean street in a mean city, a thief tries to snatch an old woman’s bag. But she finds she can’t have it without promising something in return – to ‘plant them all’. When it turns out the bag is full of acorns, the young thief embarks on a journey that changes her own life and the lives of others for generations to come.

WAITING FOR ANYA Written by Michael Morpurgo. Ages 9+ It is World War II and Jo stumbles on a dangerous secret: Jewish children are being smuggled away from the Nazis, close to his mountain village in Spain.
