The most fundamental issue in psychologyfrom the angle of development.

    The developmental process revolves aroundchildren.

    Five levels of self awareness:

    Level 0 Confusion

    Level 1 Differentiation

    Level 2 Situation

    Level 3 Identification

    Level 4 Permanence

    Level 5 Self Consciousness/Meta Self - Awareness

The general level in self - awareness

    Degree of zero self awareness

Individual is unaware of his/ hersurroundings

Assumes as a plain extension of the

world, not a reflection of it.

The individual is not aware of mirrorsas reflection.

    Expression of ones individual self.

The sense of what is assumed in themirror is different from what is assumedin the environment.

The differentiation between theexperience of ones own bodymovements and the direct experience ofother moving units in the world.

The individual is capable of exploring theinterperceptual link between seen movements onthe mirror surface and what is perceived of theown body proprioceptively.

The individuals are a step ahead in the awarenessof the matched surface characteristics of seenand felt bodily movements.

They project what they feel form within thecertain image

No confusion as the individuals are fully awarethat what is seen and observed on the mirror isspecial; to the person itself.

    CONT

Toddlers begin to copy the projection of thetongue of an adult model pulling her tongue

to the left and right.Infants are able to differentiate their own

    actions

Infants in their second month, begin to

correspond to the stimuli- smiling whenplayfully engaging in face to faceinteractions.

Infants also begin to engage in

protovonversations via taking turn, imitatingpeople, affective mirroring and mutualmonitoring.

Infants begin to reach for objects that are

    within reachable distance

The individual is able to manifest

    recognition.

Identified self is expressed whenthere is an identity relation between

the inner self and the outer

environment. Many refer to the reflection in the

    mirror as standing for identification.

    9/14

The self is identified beyond the here andnow of mirror experience

Can be identified in movies and pictures

taken in the past, where the self might beyounger, at different location and different

    clothes.

The identification of self is not bounded on

    temporal simultaneity, spatial concurrence

of the body and the reflection of self either

    in videos or images.

    CONT

    According to Povinelli, delayed self

recognition shows that children above theage of 3 get the grasp of chronological

    dimensions of self.

The self pertains what is experienced inthe past and now

The self pertains what can be seen in a

mirror now and in a movie tomorrow.

    11/14

The self is recognized from both the first

person point of view and third person point of

    view.

Individuals are aware of what and how they arein the public eye.

The public point of view is replicated for

auxiliary evaluation which are delusion and

    devaluation.When a child demonstrates some

understanding of object permanence, the child

also demonstrates permanence in relation to the

    object.

    CONT

    Expression of embarrassment shown by

children is the sign that they are aware of thepublic mind and how others perceive the child.

Children tend to shy away from their

    reflection in the mirror.

Process of imagining what others might think

of us whether explicitly or implicitly is linked

to the cognitive aptitude of understanding and

reading ones mind.Involvement of phantasms and fantasy is the

key in meta cognitive level of self -

    awareness

Self awareness in early life reveals thelayers of processes that develop in us.

Self awareness is not a single but

    multiple entity.

Self awareness is like onions, layers

after layers, just like us in the way that

we act, perceive and think of this world.

Self awareness will never wear offfrom everyone because we need it in

everyday life. Only death will tear us

    apart from self awareness.
