Hello Class,

My name is Allison. I am 24 and have 2 children, Jimmy will be 5 in July and Julian is 16 months. I am currently working as a paralegal and want to get my bachelor's in criminal justice. Once I finish this degree, I plan to attend law school. Math is not a strong point for me, so I am nervous to start this class!

Hello Allison,

Welcome to our class. You have just added a class to your busy schedule: taking care of two children and working.

I also have a boy and a girl, just a little older than your two: boy 32 and girl 29.

Now you mentioned that you are a little nervous about this class. Not to worry. I have an internet site that I want you to visit. You will learn that you are not alone and find ways to cope.

After you have gone to the site, write back and tell me your thoughts.

Regards,Jacqueline Instructor

Hello John,

Do you remember that acronym that you had to memorize? PEMDAS

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally ORPurple Elephants May Destroy A School

It tells you the order in which to solve an expression. Parentheses first, then exponents, multiplication and division followed by addition and subtraction.

In the given example, you would multiply first then add.

5 + 4 x 2 = 5 + 8 = 16.

Week One DQ#1 Course Facilitator

Think of a time when you participated on or observed the results of a successful team in your workplace. Describe the situation and explain what helped the team reach its level of success.

Response from Mark Student

Team work sounds like communism. Individualism and hard work are not appreciated. The most incompetent is raised to the same level as the best worker. The lazy worker can do nothing and take credit from those that work hard.

Course Facilitator:

I understand what you are trying to say, but sometimes there is a place for team projects. When you brain storm, you are integrating diverse experiences to come up with a unique solution.

Response from Susan Student

What about sports? How about the Yankees or any other strong team? The team leader is Derek Jeter. A team without a leader is like a ship without a sail. Every man for himself is kind of primal, don’t you think?

Response from Mark Student:

What is your problem, Susan? Sports is a poor example of real life. It is a game, a form of escape. People choose to play sports, they are not forced. Anyway, even though baseball is a team sport, look at the statistics: highest batting average, number of whole runs. Individual statistics.

Hello Class (public forum)

For this DQ, I am looking for past team experiences that were successful. I expect all of the posts to stay on this topic. There was a post that did veer from the topic and might even have offended someone. I will continue this conversation with the student through the individual forum.

Regards,Jacqueline Facilitator

Hello Mark (Individual Forum)

Your post about individual work in a collective setting was interesting. I do not think the main forum was the best place to express your feelings concerning team assignments.

We will be working on team assignments in this course. This has been established by the XXX institution. Perhaps you were not aware of the team requirements when you signed up for this course. It is good that you want to express your personal views, but this course site is not the proper venue. While you are in this course, I need you to refrain from expressing your personal views that some may consider improper and offensive.

Please write back to me through the individual forum. I would like to continue this conversation.

Regards,Jacqueline Facilitator

Mary Student (public forum to Team B)

Your group copied two of our answers from our team project this week, problems 2 and 4, water levels.

Jacqueline Facilitator (private forum to Mary)

Plagiarism is a serious charge. You should have discussed your concerns directly to me in the private forum. Please do not make any more public accusations. I will look into the matter.

Jacqueline Facilitator (public forum)

If a student has any concerns involving another student or team, the matter should be brought to the attention of the instructor in the private forum.
