History of Change
4-3/UnderNot enough true linebackers
Had to roll to 8 man front to defend the run
4-2-5Utilizes more strong safety types
Puts more speed on the fieldFlexibility to play 2 high safeties
Potentially a 9 man frontSimplicity
Allows flexibility with personnel

Personnel
Defensive Ends – Aggressive high motor kids who may have been LB’s but were a little slow or stiff. If you have one bigger or stronger you can play TE/SE side. If their equal just play left and right.
Defensive Tackles – Bigger and stronger kids that can handle double teams. The 3 technique should be the playmaker and the 1 technique a plugger. If their equal again just play left and right.
Inside Linebackers – These are your typical linebackers strong and physical. If their equal you can play them left and right. If one is bigger and more of a plugger he should be your B gap player.
Outside Linebackers/Strong Safeties – Both positions should be filled by strong safety type players. You can get away with the strong-side guy being a little bigger and more of a linebacker. The weak-side guy needs to be intelligent.
Corners – Good space players. Good ball skills.
Free Safety – Intelligent and a great tackler. Best Player.

Coverages
2 Deep RobberPrimarily used against 2 back formations because it potentially creates a 9 man front. Great against run, excellent against boot and play-action pass, vulnerable to the quick
flat and deep corners
2 DeepPrimarily used vs. spread teams and in pass situations. Great against the pass and
perimeter screen game.
3 DeepPrimarily used to defend 1 back run, boot and play-action pass.
3 Deep RotationPrimarily used vs. spread teams to compliment 2 deep coverage. Great against 1
back run, boot & play-action pass.
