Introduction Conflict is a part of relationships and life in community. Jesus’ words in
today's gospel are often used in situations having to do with church
discipline. The prophet Ezekiel tells of warning the wicked to turn from their
ways, and Paul reminds us that love is the fulfilling of the law. We gather in
the name of Christ, assured that he is present among us with gifts of peace
and reconciliation.
Gathering: The Holy Spirit Gathers Us in Worship

Love does not keep locked inside
Love is a river that flows through
And love never fails you
Verse 2
Love will sustain
Love will provide
Love will not cease at the end of time
And love will protect
Love always hopes
And love still believes when you don't

Love is the arms that are holding you
Love never fails you
Bridge
When my heart won't make a sound
When I can't turn back around
When the sky is falling down
Nothing is greater than this
Greater than this
Ending
'Cause love is right here
Love is alive
Love is the Way the Truth the Life
Love is the river that flows through

A Prayer for Healing Pastor: In this time of pandemic and racial tensions, let us pray…
A moment of silence for reflection.
Pastor: From a world-wide pandemic of the coronavirus disease: from
sickness and dying, from stress and weariness, from isolation and loneliness,
from uncertainty and loss--we pray:
All: heal us, O Lord.
Pastor: From the sin of racism and injustice: from white supremacy and
systemic racism, from white privilege, police brutality, political provocateurs,
destruction and death--we pray:
All: heal us, O Lord.
Pastor: We are your children of all ages, colors, genders, and creeds. For all
nations and all our neighbors, we pray:
4
All: heal us, O Lord.
Pastor: Almighty God, we believe in your healing and love. In Jesus’ name, we
pray:
All: heal us, O Lord. Amen.

Thanksgiving for Baptism Pastor: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are raised with him to
new life.
All: Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.
Pastor: We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning you created us in
your image and planted us in a well-watered garden. In the desert you
promised pools of water for the parched, and you gave us water from the
rock.
All: Thanks be to God!
Pastor: When we did not know the way, you sent the Good Shepherd to lead
us to still waters. At the well your Son promised a spring of water gushing up
to eternal life, and on this day, you shower us again with the water of life.
All: Thanks be to God!
Pastor: We praise you for your salvation through water and your Word, for the
water in this font, and for all water everywhere. We are washed in your
forgiveness, grace, and love. You satisfy the thirsty, and give us the life only
you can give.
All: Thanks be to God!
Pastor: To you, O God, be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our
Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.
All: Amen!

Gospel: Matthew 16:21-28
Jesus offers practical advice to his disciples on how individuals—and the
church as a whole—should go about restoring relationships when one
member has sinned against another.
Pastor: The good news of Jesus Christ according to the gospel of Matthew,
the sixteenth chapter.
All: Glory to you, O Lord!
Pastor: [Jesus said to the disciples:] 15“If another member of the church sins
against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the
member listens to you, you have regained that one. 16But if you are not
listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be
confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17If the member refuses
to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even
to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 18Truly I
tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever
you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19Again, truly I tell you, if two of
you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my
Father in heaven. 20For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am
there among them.”
Pastor: The gospel of the Lord!
All: Praise to you, O Christ!

Apostles’ Creed Leader: We proclaim our faith together in the words of the Apostles’ Creed.
All: I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.*
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayers of Intercession Leader: Drawn together in the compassion of God, we pray for the church,
the world, and all those in need.
A brief silence.
Leader: Unite your church, O God. Strengthen ecumenical partnerships;
guide the work of the Lutheran World Federation and the World Council of
Churches. Bless our call process for an associate pastor of evangelism and
mission. Lord, in your mercy,
All: hear our prayer.
Leader: Protect your creation, O God. Teach us ways that do not harm what
you have entrusted to our care. Lord, in your mercy,
All: hear our prayer.
15
Leader: Turn nations and leaders from ways that lead to death. Shape new
paths toward peace and cooperation, teaching us to recognize one another
as neighbors. Lord, in your mercy,
All: hear our prayer.
Leader: Tend to all in need of your compassion (especially). Lord, in your
mercy,
All: hear our prayer.
Leader: Sustain us in our work, O God, and give work to those who need it.
Help us to love our neighbors in and through our work. Lord, in your mercy,
All: hear our prayer.
Leader: Bless the life-giving efforts of all medical professionals during this
coronavirus pandemic. Protect them and give them wisdom, strength, and
endurance. Lord, in your mercy,
All: hear our prayer.
Leader: We remember with thanksgiving those who have died in faith. Until
with them we see your salvation. Lord, in your mercy,
All: hear our prayer.
Leader: All these things and whatever else you see that we need, we entrust
to your mercy; through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

Offertory Jesus, Priceless Treasure Crüger, Franck, Winkworth
1 Jesus, priceless treasure,
source of purest pleasure,
truest friend to me:
ah, how long I've panted,
16
and my heart has fainted,
thirsting, Lord, for thee!
Thine I am, O spotless Lamb;
nothing in this world can hide thee,
naught I ask beside thee.
2 In thine arm I rest me;
foes who would molest me
cannot reach me here.
Though the earth be shaking,
every heart be quaking,
Jesus calms my fear.
Lightnings flash and thunders crash;
yet, though sin and hell assail me,
Jesus will not fail me.
3 Hence, all fears and sadness,
for the Lord of gladness,
Jesus, enters in.
God, who dearly loves us,
from all trial saves us,
gives sweet peace within.
I have borne this worldly scorn;
still in thee lies purest pleasure:
Jesus, priceless treasure!
Peace Pastor: Family of God in Christ, the peace of the Risen Lord be with you
always!
All: And also with you.
The Lord’s Prayer
Pastor: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray…
All: Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
17
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and forever. Amen.
Sending: The Holy Spirit Leads Us in Mission to the World
Blessing Pastor: Almighty God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you and lead you
into the way of truth and life.
All: Amen.
