The last of the guests had just made their way out the door. After hosting my mom’s birthday party at our place that evening, my husband and I could barely keep our eyes open. Prepping for the next day’s 4:00 a.m. wakeup call did not rank high on my wish list. Nevertheless, I found myself rummaging through craft supplies in search of a hot glue gun, nowhere to be found. After a day spent putting out small fires, a lost glue gun could very well send me over the edge. Thankfully, my sister turned up with one, and I roped my husband into helping me cover paper mâché Easter eggs in baker’s twine for a local news segment the next morning. We both stood quietly, intently focused on the task at hand, until my husband piped up, “Do you ever take a step back, and say to yourself, ‘I’m wrapping paper mâché eggs with twine at midnight?’” The two of us erupted in the kind of laughter that can only come from delirious sleep deprivation. I love my husband for moments like this. Perspective. A friend and bride-to-be recently remarked that after signing up for a popular wedding website just days after her engagement, she was surprised to find herself exactly 36 days behind on her wedding planning timeline. Two mom friends set out to plan a Jackson Pollock inspired art party for their toddler girls. Splashes of color make an appearance in the decorative bunting, six-layer rainbow cake, and, of course, lots and lots of paint. The party-planning mamas draped one huge canvas across the backyard fence and let their little ones have at it. The party favors, monogrammed smocks, came in handy for keeping clothes, if not faces, paint-free.

Promise Tangeman is known as much for her big hair as her bold designs. The California-based graphic designer creates websites for some of the most reknown photographers in the field. And despite Tangeman’s artistic and business acumen, she finds herself answering as many questions about her personal style as her design work. Alexandra Evjen, a fashion stylist and Tangeman’s former project manager, raided her closet (and her hubby’s too) to pull together some edgy menswear inspired looks, all while allowing Emma to pick her brain.

Brady Breese (pictured above), owner of Urban Cookies Bake Shop, wouldn’t strike you as the Betty Crocker type. That didn’t stop him from winning the title in a Food Network Cupcake Wars challenge. Facing off against two other bakers, Breese’s orange olive oil and rosewater cupcake, well, took the cake. Breese shares his winning recipe along with nine essential baking secrets.
9 Tips to Better Cupcakes1. Beating EggsEggs need to be added one at a time. This helps keep the batter emulsified, which translates to light and airy cake.2. Wet-Dry MixingIf a recipe calls for oil, always mix the dry ingredients separately.
This prevents the formation of gluten, which leaves you with a very tender cake.3. Sinking CakeA cake sinks if it isn’t cooked all the way or if it’s over-leavened (adding too much baking powder or soda). For most recipes, 1 teaspoon of baking powder per cup of flour or 1/4 teaspoon baking soda per cup of flour is ideal. 4. Sift FlourFlour compacts as it stands, so aerate your flour first by straining or sifting before measuring. Then, level off with a table knife. Measuring compacted flour will leave you with more flour than a recipe truly needs.5. Tough CakeA tough cake has likely been over mixed. Mixing too much or
too vigorously destroys the air bubbles in the batter. Stop mixing when you can see that the flour is mixed in, but there is still some unblended powder. Finish mixing by hand with a spatula. 6. Over DoneA cake is generally done when it is no longer wet and springs back at the touch of your finger.7. Butter TemperatureLet butter sit for 20 to 30 minutes before mixing. This translates to a lighter airy batter.8. Measuring Cups MatterBaking is about accuracy, so be sure to use the correct cups for wet or dry ingredients.9. For a Moist CakeFor moist cake, your batter should be soupy not thick. Oil rather than butter yields a more moist cake.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a muffin pan with cupcake liners. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer, mix oil, sugar, salt, and orange extract on medium for 30 seconds. Add both eggs and continue mixing on medium for 30 seconds. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula and mix again on medium for 10 seconds. Next, add marmalade

HONEY GLAZEYIELDS 1/2 CUP
1/2 cup honey
In a small sauce pan over low heat, simmer honey until it starts to bubble. Remove from heat and transfer to a small bowl.
YOGURT ROSEWATER BUTTER CREAM FROSTINGYIELDS 2+ CUPS
8 ounces salted butter, room temperature4 cups powdered sugar1/4 cup whole milk plain yogurt 1/2 tsp rosewater
In the bowl of an electric stand mixer with paddle attachment or a standard hand held mixer and medium mixing bowl, whip butter
on medium for one minute. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula and mix again on medium for 15 seconds. In a small bowl, sift powdered sugar. Add the sugar to the whipped butter and mix on medium until fully incorporated. Scrape the sides and bottom of bowl again and add the yogurt and the rosewater. Mix on medium-high for one minute.
TO ASSEMBLE:Transfer cooled cupcakes to a platter. Dip each cupcake top into the honey glaze mixture. Place frosting in a piping bag with a round tip or in a gallon-size plastic baggy. Snip 1/2 inch off the corner of the bag and begin piping frosting on each cake. You may also frost by simply using a butter knife and spreading the frosting evenly over each cake. Next, with a small tong, delicately place baby rose petals on top.
and orange zest. In a food processor or blender, combine the chopped orange and heavy cream and blend until smooth. Add this mixture to the wet ingredients, as well as the almond meal and mix on medium speed for 30 seconds. In a medium bowl, sift flour, baking powder and baking soda. Add to the wet ingredient mixture and mix on medium speed for 30 seconds. Turn the mixing speed down to low, add cold water and continue mixing until incorporated. Scrape the sides and bottom of bowl one last time to be sure all ingredients are fully incorporated.
Fill the 12 cupcake liners 2/3 full with batter and bake for 22 minutes. Rotate pan 180 degrees half-way through. Oven heat and times may vary, so bake until the tops are no longer wet and spring back upon touching. Allow to cool.

2–3 tbsp olive oil1 onion, finely chopped1 large chorizo (or other sausage), sliced1 cup (about 200 g/7 oz) cooked potatoes (boiled, roasted, whatever), sliced5 cherry tomatoes1/2 bunch flat-leaf Italian parsley, roughly chopped 1 cup (100 g/3.5 oz cheese, grated, crumbled (whatever)4–5 free-range eggs
Preheat grill (broiler) to medium–high.Heat oil in a large ovenproof frying pan with deep sides. Fry onion and sausage over medium heat, turning frequently until slightly crispy, for about 5 minutes. Add potatoes, cherry tomatoes and parsley, then finally the cheese.Break eggs into pan. Season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover with a lid or large plate and cook for about 5 minutes, until it has firmed up. Turn off heat.Place pan under grill, with handle poking out. Wrap handle in foil if it’s made of wood or plastic, and make sure handle stays outside oven door, which should stay open. Grill (broil) tortilla for about 5 minutes, until tomatoes cook a bit and things turn golden. Serve.
This is Mexican-style street food meets whatever’s- in-the-fridge. A little bit throw-it-together and a little bit late-night cure. Go with your gut.

BREAKFAST BLUEBERRY QUINOASERVES 1-2
2 cups (500 ml/17 fl oz) milk or soy milk 1 cup (200 g/7 oz) quinoa, rinsed1/8 tsp ground cinnamon1/2 tsp brown sugar1 cup (155 g/5.5 oz) fresh blueberries
Bring milk to a gentle simmer in a small saucepan. Add quinoa and return to boil. Reduce heat to low, then cover and simmer for about 10–12 minutes, until three-quarters of the milk has been absorbed.Stir in cinnamon, sugar and a pinch of sea salt. Cook for another 5–8 minutes, until almost all the milk has been absorbed. Stir in half the blueberries and cook for 30 seconds. Serve topped with remaining blueberries, and maybe some extra milk and a sprinkling of brown sugar, if desired. It’s great with a big dollop of natural yoghurt too.

Sarah Sherman Samuel, founder and creative director of Smitten Studio, only has creative bones in her body. Interior design: check. Graphic design: check. Photography: check. You’ve likely seen some of her paper products on Target shelves during her days working as Creative Director for Greenroom. Lately though, she’s eagerly anticipating (and busily prepping for) the launch of her very own product line. This dog-loving, style-savvy, Los Angeles transplant shares a peek inside her home office studio.

EM: Favorite go-to recipe?SS:My go-to recipe for a simple meal is a baked salmon and kale salad.

EM: How would you describe your interior design style?SS: I gravitate mostly to the mid century modern aesthetic which is much more prevalent in the rest of my home, but I also like to mix
it up a bit so things feel collected, and the space is a visual extension of my experiences.
EM: Where did you go to school and what did you study?SS: I went to Western Michigan University’s College of Fine Art where I received my BFA in Graphic Design.
My original major at university was in painting, but I switched to Graphic Design after discovering it for myself at a graduate’s BFA design show. I am grateful for the painting background, as it gave me my strong foundation in color.

Stylistically, that still influences my work; for example, I love to incorporate the hand-painted into my pattern/surface design work.
EM: What was your very first job?SS: I was a barista at a coffee shop in Michigan when I was 15.
EM: What is your long-term career goal?SS: Right now I have my head down, trying to iron out all of the little details that come with launching your own product line. I am hoping to have the launch sometime this spring or summer and then see where that takes me. It has always been my
long-term goal to have my own product line, and after spending the last five years building a successful one for another company, I am so excited that it is close to coming to fruition for myself!
EM: Where do you see yourself in five years?SS: Hmm, in five years I see myself still traveling around with my husband, hopefully still writing and growing my blog, finding inspiration outside, and spending as much time at our cabin as possible. I also want to grow my brand to reach bigger retailers, or maybe even to my own brick and mortar store.

It’s a cool afternoon when we pile into Becki Crosby’s white minivan affectionately dubbed “The swagger wagon.” She unbuckles a child’s carseat and tosses it in the back to make room. I had planned to follow behind Crosby in my own car on our way to Emma’s Biking with Becki shoot, but she insists I ride with her. Alejandra Vidal, our photographer, has already made herself comfortable in the passenger seat, so I figure, why not? I strap my 10-month-old into one of the remaining two carseats (that’s three kids total if you’re keeping score and Crosby and her husband have another on the way), and we hit the road. My first impression of Crosby,
a popular wardrobe and photo shoot stylist, happened over social media. A photo, captioned, “a pregnant girl with morning sickness in the car for 10 hours” proves that even at her worst, this girl does not take a bad photo. I am pleasantly surprised that upon meeting her in person, she is much more than a pretty face. Crosby’s quick wit and laid back personality instantly put me at ease. Even when a photo shoot mishap threatens to send her mother-in-law’s vintage prom dress to prom dress heaven, Crosby remains cool as a cucumber.
SARAH HUBBELL: That was a close call there with your
mother-in-law’s dress. BECKI CROSBY: It’s actually fine. There are no tears!SH: What a relief! You pulled the dress and the rest of this look together with direction from Alejandra. Where do you typically draw inspiration for shoots? BC: Sometimes I shut myself off from Pinterest or other blogs and websites, because even though I like seeing what others are doing, I don’t want my ideas and work to be heavily influenced by it. I try to keep tunnel vision on what I’m drawn to. My mom is super old fashioned, and we have a close relationship, so I like things that have nostalgia to them and things that are girly and feminine. not always trendy, but it always appeals to me. SH: How do you juggle work and motherhood? BC: For anyone to do that, you have to have support from the people in your life. My husband didn’t always understand what kind of support I needed, but he now knows how much it takes to run a business. It’s not like you can leave your job at the door when you get home. It’s 24 hours.My kids play with each other which helps, but I work long, late hours. Things that require my full attention I do between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. If you asked me if I was balanced, I would probably say no. I have to make sure I’m putting my family first. SH: Working mamas are always
trying to find balance. It’s hard. BC: I think people who don’t own businesses are sometimes too critical of women who do. It makes us working moms feel worse. Being a mom is amazing, and I love it, but I for sure need more in my life. SH: With a thriving styling and consulting business, what does “more” look like for you? Where do you see yourself in the next five years? BC: I really get a lot out of helping people. It fulfills me. I would like to continue blogging (or get back to it, since I haven’t been), and I really like public speaking and workshops. Doing what I do now but on a bigger scale. SH: Public speaking doesn’t come naturally to most people.
Do you get nervous? BC: Practice makes perfect. I get a little more confident every time I do [a TV segment or speaking engagement]. I think that may be why I like it, because it isn’t easy, but I like the challenge. I do get nervous and intimated, but that challenges me to work harder and be better. SH: What items can we always find in your bag? BC: Tarte LipSurgence lip crayon, Revlon’s balm stain, fruity gum, and Bath & Body Works pink chiffon hand sanitzer. SH: Last iTunes purchase? BC: Madness by Muse. I love that whole song. There’s so much energy in it. I can relate, because my whole life is madness.

No. 4 Fill bottom of container with a one inch layer of mixture. Place a slightly smaller cardboard container in the center and fill around it with remaining mixture. No. 5 Cover with plastic and let sit for 24 hours, then remove inner container. Let sit, covered, for 12 hours before removing outer container. Sand edges as needed and drill drainage hole with masonry bit, if desired.

• 2” x 2” mini canvases, available at craft stores or online
• Neodymium magnets (1/4” x 1/16” discs), but any small, super-strong magnets will work
• Super Glue
• gel medium or Mod Podge
• small stiff bristle brush
• 2” x 2” printouts of your favorite Instagram shots
• scissors (or a paper cutter, for more precise edges)

SUPER GLUE (carefully!) 2 magnets to the backside of each mini canvas.
PRINT AND CUT OUT your Instagram images, trimming each to fit the canvases.
APPLY A THIN LAYER of gel medium to the front of the canvases. Avoid the sides if possible!
LAY YOUR IMAGES on the gel medium. Carefully apply pressure to smooth out any air bubbles.
APPLY ANOTHER THIN LAYER of gel medium to seal the images, paying careful attention to ensure the sides of the images are properly adhered. It’s okay to have brush marks - they help keep the texture of the canvas.
DRY FLAT for at least 30 minutes.
