Latin MS 1: examination MMX creative/interpretive If you were cast in a production (movie, play, musical) of Cambridge Latin Course: stages 13 - 16 (The Blue Book), which character would you want to be? Give three - five SPECIFIC reasons that relate to the stories we have read and explain why you think you'd be great in that role. Cast TWO of your classmates in the role of another character for the same production. Again, give three - five SPECIFIC remarks about the characters personality or behavior; and, again, explain why you think (s)he would be a good fit. Now it's time to cast the rest of your production - or at least TWO other characters. Using any resource you'd like - except for another live human being (channeling Bregans or Quintus is ok if that's something within your powers), make a PowerPoint to promote the production. Think about it like a preview/trailer for a movie (smaller scale and without the video). You need the following about each character: 1) an image of the person you are casting 2) TWO Latin adjectives that describe your character (be certain to give the right gender form!) 3) THREE sentences from the stories that show typical behavior of your character; GIVE the page number, too. 4) a list of websites you used in creating the project You will be graded on: fulfilling the above requirements accuracy of characterization (are you describing the character as we saw him/her in the text?) accuracy of Latin (do your best!) organization: Is your work easy to view (vs. a mess!)? extra oomph: An opening page or slide that catches the audiences eye. While we can't play music in the exam room, can you think of a song or two that would make part of a good soundtrack? List and explain how you see these songs as fitting. Submit your presentation to the drop box. PLEASE label it correctly.

Create two paper bag puppets and a dialogue!

Each puppet should have:

On the front: Features that would help us recognize the character, distinguish it from others. Do your best…this is not about your artistic capabilities but about how you choose to define and identify the character. (3 points per bag = 6 points total)

stunning! attractive. recycle me. please. now. Rich detail, thoughtful choices. Anyone in the class could recognize this character.

Looking good. Nice detail. Though slightly generic, this puppet could recognize itself in a mirror (well, if puppets could do that; can they??).

Limited effort. Sloppy…not lack of artistic skill but careless.

On the back: FOUR quotations by OR specific statements about the character in Latin. These should help us understand the nature of the character and/or an event that was key to this character in the stories. “in tablino est,” for example, would NOT be particularly helpful. Quintus est puer is true but neither very original nor informative. Be your great self! Impress me as you have done all year. : >

(2 points per quotation = 8 points total)

bingo. sunny with lingering fog. nihil. Euge! Reading these instantly tells me which character you have chosen.

Mostly clear but a bit fuzzy, too. Not incorrect though not specific enough.

Has nothing to do with the character. Eheu.

Write a short dialog between the two characters. They can meet at a party or the games or the baths or a market or the theatre or at a sixth declension after party…wherever. Incorporate what you have learned about these places/events into the dialog. Write this in English with at least six Latin words/phrases (greetings, terms of endearment <e.g., Dearie or My Little Pumpkin>, prepositional phrases, adverbs) thrown in for fun (fun AND points). (28 points total)

Latin words/phrases: (1 point each = 6 points total) VI V IV III II I

Writing: (22 points)

publish me. summer reading. wha?? Rich detail. Fresh and engaging…keeps my attention and would be enjoyed by the class. Language is concrete and specific. There is flow. Makes strong use of setting.

Good detail. Organized with some energy, flat in a few places. Piece doesn’t need further explanation. Makes little use of setting.

Moderate to little interest. Lack of flow, sense. Story is unbelievable. Mechanics are sloppy, careless. Could take place anywhere.

What better way to recognize the exquisite gamer in each of you than to have you create a game?? Your task is to create a Jeopardy! board. Create a board that has six rows (the top one is for your categories!) and five columns. Though Jeopardy! gives the answers and the contestants come up with the questions, for this game you will write each question on a sticky note and write the answer underneath. You may use your textbook and the web; you may not, of course, connect with any other person.

Required categories: forms: participle + subjunctives;

uses of the subjunctive;

Rome (stages 29 – 31);

Catullus 13 + 51 (I’ve given you copies of the poem).

You may choose the one other category.

Your questions should range from easy – moderate – difficult.

You MUST include two images…either sketch something recognizable or find the images on the web…send them to the dropbox (be sure to cite your source by including the website!)

Eheu. You have not completed several of the requirements. There is little to no sense of a relationship between your categories and your questions. I sigh.

Latin 3 Examination MMXII Part II:

40 points

In lines XIII.789 - 809, Polyphemus compares Galatea to many things around him. Polyphemus, clearly, has chosen examples from the world around him, a shepherd's world. Imagine that someone else is creating a love song with comparisons. For example,we imagined that our high school economics teacher, Mr. Henderson, would show his wife affection by saying things like, "I love how you economize." So, if I were to write from the perspective of a high school economics teacher, I might include something like,"you are thriftier than a coupon queen." Create a presentation (PowerPoint, mash-up, Prezi, etc.; magazines, paper, scissors and glue are available if you’d like to make a collage) in which you: 1) write three positive comparisons from the perspective of your identity 2) find an image to correspond to each comparison 3) write three negative comparisons from the perspective of your identity 4) find an image to correspond to each comparison 5) include links to two songs that connect to and enhance the material you've chosen 6) somewhere at the end of your presentation, you MUST sight your sources!!! You may write from the identity of a kind of person but not an actual person or fictional character (e.g., not as Lady Gaga or Uncle Sam) with the exception of writing about Echo and Narcissus or Narcissus and Narcissus. Each image MUST have words connected to it, i.e. don't give an image only. You may write your comparisons in English but you MUST give the Latin nominative for the nouns and adjectives you are using for the comparisons.

bingo. sunny with lingering fog. the limited. You’ve covered all the requirements splendidly! Images and comparisons instantly let me know the nature of your persona and are cleverly coordinated. I’m so happy I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

You have covered all but one or two of the requirements. You’ve tapped your inner Polyphemus but were a bit hesitant to let him shine brightly. Images and comparisons have a theme…interesting but not grabbing…and are mostly tied. I smile.

Eheu. You have not completed several of the requirements. There is little to no sense of a relationship between your work and your chosen persona; there’s little to no relationship between your images and your writing. I sigh.
