I THINK OF ARCHITECTURE AS A PIECE OF CLOTHING TO WRAP AROUND HUMAN BEINGS

TOYO ITO

Final Major Project KINGSWAY THERMAL BATHS

A project that looked at effectively reusing a listed, unused and relatively unknown site in central London.

The project allowed for full creative control without restriction. This included selecting the site, developing the concept, following through the design process, resulting in the final complete proposal.

BLENDING TWO COMPONENTS OF LONDON’S SECRET SUBTERRANEAN WORLD TO CREATE A UNIQUE URBAN

INITIAL CONCEPT MODELS & DEVELOPMENTWHAT LIES BENEATH THE SURFACE

FREEZING THE MOVEMENT OF WATERFLUIDITY | STOPPING TIME | BELOW SURFACE

In the initial stages of the project I wanted to encapsulate my ideas in concept models. These early

thoughts revolved around the design having more going on below ground level than what is first apparent.

Furthermore, with my project using the underground RIVER FLEET the wax models helped encapsulate the

fluid movement of water beneath the surface creating a STILLNESS from the chaotic movements.

Final Year Minor ProjectPAVILION

SITE MAP

A short, creative fourth year university project, where the brief was to transform an area of Nottingham through the intervention of a pavilion, changing

the perception of the space.

The chosen site was a derelict, slim back alley, sandwiched between buildings with no apparent use. The design was inspired by music and how a song builds up to a main chorus. The urban brick buildings are clad in a temporary plywood timber

construction which leads visitors down a long ‘wave tunnel’ into the main circulation space. The differing heights force people to engage more actively with

the surroundings, having to duck and crawl at some points, whilst remaining out of reach at others.

To attract visitors into the space, sound is used as a way of enticing people. The whole space is lined with thousands of chimes which sense movement activating

lights throughout the space. A staircase at one end of the pavilion also acts an engaging musical piece, as the stairs create sound when stepped on. The light, open, central circulation space serves as somewhere to pause and reflect. The

theme is continued with long hanging chimes in the centre.

Live Branding ProjectTIME OUT

A short second year university project involving an external design company. The project brief was to create a physical environment that encapsulated the brand and enabled them to showcase their services and expand their market within an interactive space. I chose Time Out.

As a brand that focuses on showcasing the best of cities’, I wanted to create a London based branch that took on the best of London’s signature features in a slightly quirky manner. Incorporating black cabs, telephone boxes and the London underground, the bar acts as a base to relax and explore some of Time Out’s services through interactive screens and the written literature. The space has the opportunity to be used to showcase samples of upcoming events and things to do within the city such as cocktail classes and live music, also as host for Time Out’s lesser known dating service, which could hold socials and speed dating here.

The chosen location for the cocktail bar is in Soho London, an established entertainment district, which now contains many upmarket restaurants and bars.

Previous Student ProjectsRECHARGING STATIONS | THE HONEY POT

The brief for RECHARGING STATIONS was to find a new purpose for non-operational and increasingly obsolete service stations by capitalising on their unique design features. Considering the building’s former use was environmentally damaging, I decided upon a concept that would counter it’s previous use. An urban beekeeping centre called THE HONEY POT.
