Summer 2018Schedule of Classes

Instruction Begins May 29

Ongoing Admission and Registration

Welcome to the Summer 2018 Session of the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute

The Summer 2018 term of the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute begins Tuesday, May 29, 2018 and ends Wednesday, July 25, 2018. Though instruction begins in May, students can apply for admission into the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute at any time, and typically can register for classes even after they have started, at the instructor’s discretion. Complete the application at the back of this Schedule of Classes and either email it to [email protected] or mail it to the address on the application.

Thanks to the Saddleback College Admissions and Records office, we are pleased to provide in-person registration service in Laguna Woods Village, the Norman P. Murray Senior and Community Center, and at Lake Forest City Hall. Please see page 2 for a list of the days and times of in-person registration.

A Very Special “Thank You” to Dr. Robert Harman: It is my pleasure to pass along wonderful news of generosity from a former student within the Emeritus Institute. Dr. Robert Harman, student from August 2003 – May 2017, who unfortunately passed away at the age of 80 this past July, has bequeathed $630,000 to the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute. We are profoundly humbled and appreciative for Dr. Robert Harman’s generous gift to the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute which will serve to expand the breadth of the Emeritus Institute’s educational services throughout south Orange County.

Dr. Harman began his Emeritus Institute journey in August 2003 and never missed a semester over the fourteen years he engaged in his pursuit of lifelong learning at Saddleback College; in total, Dr. Harman completed 132 courses within the Emeritus Institute. In 2005, Dr. Harman presented his academic research as an invited speaker for the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute Dorothy Marie Lowry Distinguished Guest Lecture Series, speaking on Aging in the 21st Century: A View from Anthropology. It has been the pleasure of our faculty and staff to serve Dr. Harman, along with the program’s additional 6,000 lifelong learners. Dr. Harman’s benevolent donation will directly and positively affect his community for years to come.

Classes at New Sites: Thanks to the effort of our division’s Assistant Dean of Outreach and Recruitment, Bart McHenry, the Emeritus Institute is pleased to be partnering with three new locations which have agreed to host courses in the summer term: Mission Lutheran Church (Laguna Niguel), Palisades United Methodist Church (Capistrano Beach), and St. Kilian Catholic Church (Mission Viejo). If you have a recommendation on a facility that may be interested in hosting an Emeritus Institute course, please email Bart at [email protected]. We will look forward to welcoming additional new sites in the Fall 2018 semester as we eagerly work to expand lifelong opportunities through the community.

In Conclusion: The Emeritus Institute binds our community together, and for that reason, it is my sincerest joy to be leading this program. We are grateful for the opportunity to have a direct impact on so many lives, and we look forward to partnering with each of you as we create a culture of lifelong learning in south Orange County. If you would like to share any feedback regarding your experience in the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute, we welcome you to email us at: [email protected].

Sincerely,

Dan Predoehl, M. Ed Assistant Dean, Division of Community Education, Emeritus Institute, and K-12 Partnerships Director, Emeritus Institute
