THE GREAT SOUTHERN

2nd Smallest Region in WA, comprising 1.5% of the land mass

Population of the Region in 2010 was 60,000. Almost 40,000 reside within

20kms of Albany

Hospitalisation rate is increasing, going from 18% to 20% in 3 years. Attendance

rate in ED is static. However, the number of elderly is higher than the state

average at 15% of all population.

KATANNING

A town of 4000 people.

Acts as a Regional Resource Centre for surrounding district, but tends to use Albany

for anything other than straightforward cases.

Comprises two principal GP’s and a number of junior /

overseas training registars (7). We have seen a change in the

past year with more experienced junior doctors working in

Katanning and anecdotally the number of transfers reducing.

CORE SIM

Been running since March 2015

Visits to Denmark, Katanning and Mount Barker arranged

Director of SIM training and 1-2 FACEMs take the SIM Education that is held in Albany out to the regions

Feedback has been uncompromising: “The Core SIM I attended in Denmark on 21/9/2016 was by far and away the most valuable CPD event I have attended in the last 10 years”

IN-HOUSE

There is a full ED Education program incorporating weekly tutorials, SIM Education, M and M meetings and

Radiology Tutorials. We run 2 ALS courses per year and an APLS.

We have one GP at a time coming from a Smaller ED to upskill alongside the FACEM in Albany

Have utilised a further FACEM to increase capacity to supervise in the Emergency Department and to visit the

smaller sites. We have helped develop SAMAP and REM.

70 GP’s in Albany (10 Registrars)

2 have completed EMC and now do regular shifts in ED

A GP Registrar position has been created for GP’s wanting

to do the Certificate. We have now had 4 successful

candidates.
