THE GREAT SOUTHERN
2nd Smallest Region in WA, comprising 1.5% of the land mass
Population of the Region in 2010 was 60,000. Almost 40,000 reside within
20kms of Albany
Hospitalisation rate is increasing, going from 18% to 20% in 3 years. Attendance
rate in ED is static. However, the number of elderly is higher than the state
average at 15% of all population.

KATANNING
A town of 4000 people.
Acts as a Regional Resource Centre for surrounding district, but tends to use Albany
for anything other than straightforward cases.
Comprises two principal GP’s and a number of junior /
overseas training registars (7). We have seen a change in the
past year with more experienced junior doctors working in
Katanning and anecdotally the number of transfers reducing.
