Mr. Churchill’s Secretary by Susan Elia MacNeal

London, 1940. Winston Churchill has just been sworn in, war rages across the Channel, and the threat of a Blitz looms larger by the day. But none of this deters Maggie Hope. She graduated at the top of her college class and possesses all the skills of the finest minds in British intelligence, but her gender qualifies her only to be the newest typist at No. 10 Downing Street. Her unflagging spirit and remarkable mathematical ability rivals those of even the highest men in government, and Maggie finds that working for the prime minister affords her opportunities she never could have imagined. Ensnared in a web of spies, murder, and intrigue, Maggie works quickly to balance her duty to King and country with her chances for survival.

In this series debut, the author blends meticulous research on the era, psychological insight into Winston Churchill, and the creation of a riveting main character, Maggie Hope, into a spectacularly crafted novel.

Grandma Gatewood’s Walk by Ben Montgomery

Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than two hundred dollars. The next anybody heard from this farm-reared, sixty-seven-year-old great-grandmother, she had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. By September 1955 she stood atop Maine’s Mount Katahdin, sang “America, the Beautiful,” and proclaimed, “I said I’ll do it, and I’ve done it.”

Driven by a painful marriage, Grandma Gatewood not only hiked the trail alone, she was the first person—man or woman—to walk it three times. At age seventy-one, she hiked the 2,000-mile Oregon Trail. Gatewood became a hiking celebrity, and appeared on TV with Groucho Marx and Art Linkletter. The public attention she brought to the trail was unprecedented. Her vocal criticism of the lousy, difficult stretches led to

bolstered maintenance, and very likely saved the trail from extinction.

Author Ben Montgomery interviewed surviving family members and hikers Gatewood met along the trail, unearthed historic newspaper and magazine articles, and was given full access to Gatewood’s own diaries, trail journals, and correspondence. Grandma Gatewood’s Walk shines a fresh light on one of America’s most celebrated hikers.

    THE LINK & Directory

Hello to new Emerald Pointe residents. The Link is a newsletter to keep us informed and connected. We also publish a residential directory that is distributed only to EP residents.

Our community is growing. We want to further the process of getting to know each other by providing means of contact. There are common talents, interests, and hobbies within this community that we are not aware of, and we could benefit by sharing them with each other.

This effort is being encouraged and supported by the HOA and will follow the discretion and oversight of the HOA so that no privacy rights will be violated. The Link and directory will be even more valuable communication tools once the Community Center is constructed and operational.

If you would like to be a recipient of The Link and directory, please provide the following information:

NameAddressEmail address (if applicable)Phone Hobbies or interests (optional)

**You are under no obligation to provide this information. If we do not receive this information from you, you will not be on our distribution list. However, if at any time you decide that you would like to be included, please send us the requested contact information. The Link is distributed in a bi-monthly email blast by the HOA.

    Sincerely,

Debbie Nycum 19403 Moonstone DriveJane Sappington 19409 Moonstone Drive(co-editors)
