ARTICLE ABOUT BEATABARTOSOVA, THE EMC HONORARYSECRETARY

The article was written by the EMC Vice Chairwoman, Claudia DeBenedetti for Pagine Ebraiche in March 2016. Here is theEnglish version:

Beata BartosovaBeata (37) has recently been elected an honorary secretary of theEuropean Maccabi confederation (EMC). As she says, in hercase: Judaism through sports one of the key ideas of the EMC really works. She comes from Slovakia but has got strong ties to Hungary, as she was raised in southern part of thecountry very near the Hungarian border. Taking part in Szarvas the Jewish youth summer camp gaveher the first deep experience with Judaism, that was when she found out, that her family, just like manyothers in Central Eastern Europe, had a Holocaust history. After an internship at a Washington DC based lobbying group and after finishing the Central EuropeanUniversity she moved to Prague, Czech Republic, where she lived for a little more than 11 years. This iswhere she became involved with the Maccabi movement. The "affair" begun through sports. Starting as(not very good) tennis and later becoming a (lot better) badminton player, she did as well volunteer forMaccabi and eventually was lucky enough to be chosen to represent the Czech Republic and participatein the Vienna European Maccabi Games 2011. She loved the idea, the spirit and the atmosphere of thegames so very much, that she decided to try and create a Czech delegation for the World Maccabi Games2013.Looking back she admits she did not quite know what she was going into. She only found out later thatdue to serious lack of both financial and human resources there was no delegation from the CzechRepublic to the World Maccabi Games for exactly 20 years. So back in 2011, as the president of the localMaccabi branch, she went out to related organisations and friends and asked them to support the idea. And they did, so Jewish athletes from the Czech Republic could participate in the Israeli games. Aftercompleting a delegation to European Maccabi Games in Berlin 2015, she moved to Belgium, where she

spends most of her time now. During next two years in this voluntary position within the EMC, she will have a chance to continue herwork for Maccabi. She understands the challenges of small organisations and the specifics of CentralEurope. She believes in experience, education and in that love (in whatever form) should be present inwhat we do, in order to make a difference. Being a mom herself now, she plans to focus on the youngestgeneration in her work.
