Don’t Worry Be HappyA mother-woman in the Caribbean spoke to me one day about “how simple the great powers are.” She went on to explain that when you’re not learning from yourself, you absorb other people’s self and your own space or self starts to dissipate.

The more you get to know self, the more you relax self; the more you trust self and not the words of others.

When you trust yourself, the negative has to pass through because it has nowhere to get stuck. You must come from within and let the natural fl ow. Her concept is simple and true.

How often are we so busy in our stress fi lled culture that we forget to take time to nurture ourselves? Even fi ve minutes a day to just sit, relax, and review the thoughts and actions of our day can help us get to know who we are. But sometimes it seems easier to let others make our decisions or even direct our actions than to make those decisions ourselves. And much of the time, when we are in the habit of relinquishing self, that’s when stress takes over.

The DoorI called this painting “The Door” because even in the midst of a storm when the waves are crashing down, the sun represents a portal of peace.

If you really want to get to know a person what do you do? You spend time with them, fi nd out what they like and dislike, you discover what makes their heart sing. You talk to them, and do little things for them and call them all the time. How many of us do those things for ourselves?

Often it’s the feeling of maybe I’m being too selfi sh that holds us back, or the busyness of life and all that it takes just to survive. But truthfully, if you were in love with someone would you fi nd the time to include them in your daily actions? Of course – they would dominate your every free moment.

Well, now is the time to be in love with your self. This is not a selfi sh action, because not to be in love with yourself is a travesty to those around you.

The Dalai Lama says our job in life is to be happy. Why? If you are happy, your mood spreads to everyone around you. It’s contagious. Think about being in a room with someone whose laughter and self confi dence comes from a place of centered peacefulness. Now think about being in a room with someone who is stressed, tired, and needing intense nurturing. The scenario speaks for itself. In so doing, the understanding and necessity of self restoration becomes obvious.

Taoists teach us that loving ourselves is the fi rst crucial step in learning to love others. They say we can’t really love others until we can love ourselves. In the book Awaken the Healing Light of Tao, Mantak Chia talks about the inner source of love.

Chia says, “A major problem in our modern world is that we always look outside ourselves to fulfi ll our needs without realizing that others seek fulfi llment in the same way. It is our nature to assume for one reason or another, that everyone else has what we need, just as others make the same assumption about us. Out of habit, we all seek love externally without nurturing our own source of that energy from within. This leaves us with very little to share”.

Breaking FreeTrue to the title this piece is about breaking free. Sometimes it might feel like I’m in a box but one thing for sure, the sun comes up in the morning and I start again with new hope.

We must fi nd love within ourselves fi rst in order to have the power to experience unconditional love for and with others.

Release BlocksThe most important issue in a person’s life is the relationship of the self to the self. Belief in yourself is an imperative key to knowing who you are, and self confi dence is one of the most important tools you can possess.

The confi dence to know when to let something go is often hard. It is so much easier to justify something or to second guess one self. Sometimes it is so much easier to settle for less rather than face the fear of having nothing. Regardless it is all about the will to do, and the choice to do what you will.

There are always two sides to every story. Which side do you choose for your life? That’s what it is all about. You are fi ne no matter which choice you choose.

Just remember the choice is what creates the destiny.

The choice to believe in yourself is the greatest gift you can give to yourself and believe it or not the world around you.

When you walk into a job interview what is one of the most important assets you can bring to the table?

The answer is self- confi dence or the ability to know your strengths.

A Simple Treat to Help Relieve TensionBlissful Bath• One cup Epsom

salts• 1/4 cup sea salt• Your favorite

essential oilMix the salts together. Add a few drops of essential oil. Lavender and lemon are a good combination. Or try eucalyptus and spearmint. Pour the salts into a container with a lid or into a re-sealable plastic bag. When you are drawing a bath add 1/4 cup of the salts under running water.

DolphinsI painted this after a trip to Maui. What a wonderful sight watching the dolphins in the water. They just give you this warm fuzzy feeling inside that makes everything okay.

Hymothesis Storm in his book Seven Arrows, posits that if you don’t recognize your strengths they will destroy you.

That might be hard to understand, but think about it. If you fail to recognize and use the divine assets that you possess, cognitive dissonance will inadvertently be created in your life. Wikpedia defi nes cognitive dissonance as an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously. The “ideas” or “cognitions” in question may include attitudes and beliefs, and also the awareness of one’s behavior.

So if you enter that job interview and think you aren’t good enough for the position, chances are that’s the attitude you will project. Take it one step further to any facet of your life. You may say one thing, but if deep down you believe another, your inner belief is the attitude that will be projected. Bruce Lipton, in his book The New Biology, teaches us that our subconscious or inner belief system rules our life 95% of the time. If the subconscious is not being good to the self, we are in big trouble.

Most often, the voice of the subconscious was created by others in our lives. Parents who in a moment of anger may have said, “you are so stupid”, or a teacher who out of frustration disregards the effort we made on a project, a lover who calls us “fat”, and on and on goes the list. The subconscious now says, “you are so fat, you are so stupid, you can never do anything good enough”. Even though the subconscious is propagating a falsehood, it rules 95% of the time. So we’re defeated before we begin.

How to change? The answer is the relationship of the self to the self.

A physician told me once that if I would nurture and love myself the fi nancial issues in my life would dissipate.

At the time I thought he was crazy. I found out later he was right. As I began to nurture me, my life changed drastically because I was able to relax and listen to my inner voice, and in so doing became aware of the vast opportunities around me.

But how do you know your strengths? And how do I know what I need to nurture me?

BeachscapeThis painting is a bit of a dichotomy. Waves crashing, wind blowing, stormy skies, and yet there is peacefulness about the ocean that brings me back to my center every single time.

In his book The New Biology, Bruce Lipton also talks about the key to creating harmony and empowerment in our lives.

According to Lipton, the function of the mind is to create coherence between belief and the life we experience. Whatever the programs in the mind are they are going to be the programs that shape our behavior.

The problem is, if our beliefs are self sabotaging or limiting, then the mind will create that as a reality to make sure that our life experiences are coherent with our beliefs.

It is important to recognize that unless one is being conscious, their life is being controlled by their unconscious. The moment you take your conscious mind and work on a problem or consider an issue, the conscious mind, because it is a small processor, becomes occupied with its thoughts.

But if the mind is occupied with its thoughts, then it’s not paying attention, and that is the job for the subconscious ‒ to control everything that you’re not paying attention to. That’s why it’s so important to be in the present moment.

When you’re in the present moment, you’re not a backseat driver. With the subconscious up in the front, the conscious mind says please turn left and the subconscious mind says sorry, I have a program to turn right.

In reality, you’re not turning the wheel, you’re letting your subconscious do it. But if you remain consciously aware, and put your hands on the wheel, you can turn it any way you want and make your life work the way you want it to work.

Listen to Your HeartWhen your heart sings you know you are on your true path. It’s not going to sing everyday, because we all have times when things just don’t go right, but for the most part there is this underlying current that things feel pretty good.

Take some time to journal answers to the following questions:1. Have you taken the time

to get to know yourself? 2. How do you treat

someone you are truly in love with?

3. Can you treat yourself the same way?

4. What do you need to do to nurture yourself?

5. How do you want to be nurtured?

6. When is the last time you truly felt loved?

7. How did you feel?8. Do you like yourself? 9. Why or why not?

When things don’t feel good, that’s when you know somehow you’re off track. Usually when we’re off track, the universe will make us miserable until we do something about it.

Sometimes we think that just by changing our situation, we will overcome mental agitation. Or when we reach a certain point, all mental agitations will disappear. The truth is, because of the nature of the material world, we cannot be free from anxiety. We are always trying to make a solution to our problems, but the problems are just gauges as to whether or not we are on the path. The key is to acknowledge our emotions and re-frame our perceptions.

Your emotional gauge determines your experience of life. You can identify and address your emotions by becoming aware and by acknowledging them. Just accept yourself where you are at the moment.

Even when you’re lonely, bored or feeling bogged down, just be aware of what’s going on. It’s all about getting to know you. If you fi nd that you don’t feel enthusiastic about anything, it may be because you’ve lost touch with your emotions. Maybe it’s time to think of things you love to do, and do them. This will build you to the point of big leaps.

If you do what you love, and are willing to trust yourself, and take the risks to follow your inner guidance, the more your life will fl ow and remain open to new opportunities and experiences.

What Do I Love To Do?Make a list of all the things you love to do. If you don’t know what they are, make a list of everything you don’t love to do. That might give you some clues to wake up your passions. Once you have your list of what you love to do, spend a few moments in meditation visualizing yourself doing those things.Get together with some friends and brainstorm ideas of how you can make your list happen in your life.Take those ideas one step further and create a blueprint to begin.Above all don’t be afraid to go slowly. Things don’t have to happen over night. Just enjoy the journey. That’s when things will fl ow in an easy effortless way, because there is no sacrifi ce involved.

Flowers in a Blue PotWhat is it about fl owers that always puts a smile on my face? They come in all shapes, smells, colors, sizes. I think the beauty of fl owers is that no matter what they look like, they’re beautiful because they’re fl owers. I guess we humans are kind of the same.
