Sustainable Manufacturing is the new-generation paradigm shift in the manufacturing industry to reduce environmental burdens, gain cost competitiveness, and demonstrate corporate social responsibility.

The Sustainable Manufacturing Centre (SMC) is supported by key government agencies and industry-related associations. It aims to promote sustainability in the manufacturing industry and bring industry associations and research communities to work alongside with relevant government agencies to develop and implement sustainable manufacturing technologies.

MissionTo develop and implement sustainable manufacturing technologies that minimise emissions, waste and strengthen the global competitveness of Singapore’s manufacturing industry.

Weight Optimisation of Collapsible Intermodal Shipping Container CEC Systems Pty Ltd, an industrial technology company, has innovated its 40-foot container design that when empty, can be folded to save space and thus, lowers the cost on return port trips. One of the major challenges faced in its initial version of COLLAPSECON® units was its weight which is nearly 2 times heavier than an industry standard container.

SIMTech was engaged to optimise the weight of the container, reduce material cost and provide material degradation assessment of potential adhesive and sealing solutions. CEC’s partnership with SIMTech has resulted in major system upgrades leading to new generation COLLAPSECON® C-401 containers that are potentially 30% lighter than the original design in various critical sections, whilst reducing material requirements and increasing manufacturing efficiency. Confident of its potential, CEC Systems established its global operations office in Singapore to be strategically located at the gateway to European, ASEAN and Chinese markets.

SIMTech’s assistance in optimising the COLLAPSECON C-400 has been fundamental to the development of the enhanced COLLAPSECON C-401. We have been able to develop a superior product that is simpler to manufacture with an increased load capacity

Initiatives

Energy Efficiency ManagementTo achieve excellent energy efficiency, as well as reduced costs and related carbon footprints. Energy Efficiency Monitoring and Analysis System (E2MAS) is a tool developed that applies data-driven methodologies for visualisation, prediction and control of energy usage

Life Cycle ManagementTo assess and improve the environmental and economic performance of products, services and systems over their entire life cycle. This is achieved through tools that help companies reduce their carbon footprint and wastes across their operations and value chains

Lightweight for TransportationTo develop advanced technologies for improving lightweight materials processing and applications, and enhance companies’ lightweight capabilities

Materials Efficient ManufacturingTo focus on the materials and processes of sustainable manufacturing to reuse and revive engineering components to help companies minimise/avoid material wastages, improved reliability and durability

Water Efficiency ManagementTo develop water efficiency methodologies and technologies for both urban and industrial uses. The developed methodologies systematically improve water efficiency by implementing water recycling measures and optimising water operations
