• … highlights the ‘modern workforce’ as being central to transforming healthcare
• … recognises the need to balance national integration with locally-driven capabilities that are sensitive to local circumstances
• … identifies that nationally we will focus on the key systems that provide the ‘electronic glue’ which enables different parts of the service to work together so that organisations can focus on being responsive to local needs
In response the NHS’s new national collaboration platform aims to…• … provide that ‘glue’ to enable different parts of health and social care services to work
together
• … increase digital communications through providing modern user-friendly email
• … enable secure communications with external recipients
• … provide instant messaging as an efficient way to communicate quickly
• … offer modern ways of collaborating – such as video conferencing using Skype

A national system still presents local challenges
Delivering digital collaboration
Old operating systems prevent users getting the most out of new applications, whilst upgrades require negotiation if older applications aren’t compatible.
Establish service models and local contracts that ensure applications stay up to date – technology will continue to evolve at an ever-increasing pace.
Users often aren’t getting the most out of new systems as their time for training / up-skilling is limited and IT isn’t considered core to their role.
Having the right change agents in place is key – even small changes in behaviour require some level of local engagement to ensure awareness.
Mobile workforces need the hardware to be available and reliable – this is critical for any workforce design
Having a hardware strategy that is fit for purpose & future proofed could save pain (& money!) in the future.
Acceptable Usage Policies need to constantly evolve in line with changes in ways of working, the technology available and developments in security.
The most common factors preventing collaboration are IG and Security related – getting these right early and ensuring decisions are fact-based is critical.
