CURIOSITY IN ACTION

This year, we embraced the unknown and learned new things about ourselves, our organization, and our community. We did this through:

LAUNCHING our diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiative to examine our own practices

REFLECTING on our own perspective through implicit bias training for leadership

HOSTING our first kickoff event with nationally known, locally-based philanthropic leader, Valaida Fullwood

LEARNING through more than ten virtual events on topics such as voting rights, civic discourse, and gun violence

CELEBRATING our 2021 grantees through a livestreamed annual meeting and small in-home socials

A NOTE FROM OUR

BOARD CHAIR &

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR EACH YEAR, OUR ANNUAL REPORT GIVES US THE CHANCE TO

REFLECT ON THE PAST PROGRAM YEAR AND WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED AND ACCOMPLISHED AS AN ORGANIZATION.

At the beginning of this year, we chose the theme of curiosity. This quality drives us to dig deeper, to ask why, and to challenge our old ideas. A fitting theme in a year with many unknowns when we launched a new three-year strategic plan with transformational goals including: telling our story and shaping our growth, creating a more diverse and inclusive organization, and enriching stakeholder relationships with a focus on our values.

We are inspired by the ways Women’s Impact Fund has demonstrated curiosity this year. Our events took on new, fun formats and were current and topical, from the outsized impact of the pandemic on women to learning about voting rights on the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. In our diversity, equity, and inclusion work, we continue to examine and build our understanding of who we are, the internal systems and structures on which we are built, and the unintended consequences those can have on the community.

Curiosity is the seed from which thoughtful action and meaningful change grows. We hope the coming year is a time when we will begin to bring all that we have learned to life.

With our sincere gratitude,

E N G A G E M E N T

We foster strong relationships among our members and with

the broader community.

E D U C A T I O N

We provide learning opportunities to promote

thoughtful philanthropy and informed leadership.

C O L L E C T I V E G I V I N G

We strengthen communities by harnessing our collective

intellectual and financial resources.

Board of Directors Statement on DEI

Women’s Impact Fund is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We seek to apply a DEI lens to all components of our mission – collective giving,

education, and engagement.

We are a curious, growth-minded organization and strive to approach our work with humility and

willingness to listen and learn. We commit to being a better partner and sharing power with the

community and each other.

2020-2021 GRANTS

ENGAGED MEMBERS THROUGH CREATIVE EVENTS

In a year like none other, we created virtual spaces for member education and engagement. From Social Hour for Social Issues where we watched and discussed a film on civic discourse (popcorn in hand!), to being serenaded by a talented Opera Carolina artist at a Members & Friends Social, we found ways to “see” and learn from each other even when physically apart.

MOVED TOWARD TRUST-BASED PHILANTHROPYOur 2020-2021 grants application allowed nonprofits to apply for project or unrestricted funding. Four of the seven grantees this year received unrestricted grants.

CELEBRATED GENEROSITY THROUGH RECORD GIVING TO THE ANNUAL FUND

The Annual Fund which supports critical operating needs, ended the year with more than $75,000 raised. This was especially important during a year when membership numbers were down. It allowed us to end the year in a strong financial position.

INCREASED COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS

With our Executive Director, Patricia Massey Hoke, in her second year, we expanded the collaborations of which we are a part. We participated in August’s Black Philanthropy Month for the first time, and Patricia represented WIF on the planning group for the United Way Funder’s Collaborative deep dive into racial equity, joining a small number of giving circles at the table.

FOSTERED LEADERSHIP THROUGH PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

More than 120 members were involved in committee or board leadership, giving them the chance to participate in the strategic and operational work of WIF.

A YEAR IN REVIEW

LEARNED ABOUT TIMELY SOCIAL ISSUES

We hosted more than ten virtual education events covering topics including women and work during COVID, food insecurity, tree inequity, nonprofit collaboration, and harnessing our personal power as women. More women engaged in our Lunch & Learns and Women LEAD series than ever before!
