Gathering information isn’t knowing. Knowing can only come from doing. It comes from the emotional involvement and experience that we have when we use the information. The value of “experiential learning” is that it creates knowing and results. This action-results feedback loop is essential for better results.

A paradigm is an internal control system our brain creates to maintain a desired course of action. It is strongly related to our self image. Our present paradigm, or belief system, is getting us our current results. Any improvement in performance is only temporary unless we alter our paradigm. This requires the development of new habits and a deeper awareness.

Our Unconscious MindDevelops First

Our Unconscious MindDevelops First

Our Psycho-Cybernetic Mechanism (PCM) or our “autopilot” makes achieving and maintaining better results a very challenging process.

The PCM’s job is to keep us in our comfort zone. This comfort zone reflects our subconscious programming and self image. It will continue to try to pull us back to actions and results that reflect this paradigm until we change our paradigm (belief system) to reflect the results we want to achieve.

Mastery

Mastery is knowing intuitively, in the blink of an eye, without consciously knowing. It is the unconsciously competent wisdom that comes from experience.

Brain neural science has shown us that in order to achieve better business and personal results we need to REFUSE to allow negative thoughts and emotions to inhabit our conscious mind or the culture of our business organizations.

Our conscious mind can only handle four thoughts for about 10-20 seconds at a time in working memory. We can consciously choose whether we want to inhabit this small space with negative or positive thoughts. We all have a PRIMAL desire-acquire emotion. We need to keep focused on moving forward toward our desired results by refusing to allow complacency to dampen our motivation along the way.

Ignore the self doubts and negative feelings that our brain ALWAYS creates. Stay focused on the positive feelings and emotions you have associated with achieving your desired result. Our positive thoughts trigger positive emotions. Our negative thoughts trigger negative emotions. Negative thoughts send us into “fight, flight or freeze” mode and our motivation is lost. Positive thoughts improve our decision making ability. They create motivation, confidence and a sense of well being. Authentic, emotionally intelligent leaders consistently come from abundance that positive thoughts and emotions create. Victims consistently come from scarcity that the negative thoughts and emotions create. Both act like a positive or negative energy virus within your organization. Studies by psychologist Barbra Fredrickson and her organization have shown that businesses need a MINIMUM of 3 positive actions-emotions for each negative action-emotion to avoid organizational collapse. Companies with a 5:1 or better positive to negative comment ratio are thieving. Take your foot off the negative thought-emotional energy brake. Keep your foot on the positive thought-emotional energy gas.

Keep moving forward

Poor customer service leads to poor customer retention which leads to less investment in customer service, which continues the problem. Your boss has a temper tantrum because they are stressed about their leadership abilities. The tantrum undermines their relationships, which makes them even more stressed and they become more likely to have another tantrum. An employee is disheartened because of negative feedback from a boss, which leads to less effort, which of course leads to more negative feedback.

How do you turn a downward individual or organizational spiral into an upward spiral?

Most things that go wrong go wrong slowly. The answer is not to look for the swift solution to a long-term problem. The solution is to replace the downward cycle with the upward cycle. First, become aware of what is triggering the down cycle. "This is my down cycle. What do I need to learn? How do I change my current habits?"

The fish restaurant that as sales go down, borrows money to buy ever fresher fish instead of cutting corners that will lead nowhere good. Or the ad agency the does not follow a client loss with layoffs, but with the hiring of even better creative staff. Slowing sales leads to more investment in customer service, not less.Identifying the cause of the downward cycle and investing in replacing it with the upward cycle is the one and only best strategy. The alternative, which is to rationalize and defend the down cycle as a permanent habit, is tragic.

Embracing Exponential Change

In next 20 years we will experience the equivalent of 100 years worth of change. We are much too complacent and we don’t even know it. Companies will get really big or really small really fast. We need to develop authenticity and emotional intelligence to embrace the accelerating rate of global change.

The Dynamics of Organizational Change

There is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the hatred of all who would profit by the preservation of the old system and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new one.

The Law of Diffusion of Innovation states when approximately 20% of employees get involved in an organizational change a tipping point is reached and the Fence Sitters begin to join in the change movement. As more and more people begin to embrace the changes it becomes “safe” (less risky) for this second group of Fence Sitters (approximately 60%) to join in the change movement.

We also need to be aware of the negative energy and communications that a third group of employees (approximately 20%) will encourage. These individuals will find it hardest to embrace the changes and may ultimately end up leaving the organization. It's tempting to spend your time trying to extinguish bad behaviors within this group but spreading the word about the “champions” will ultimately change the culture.

1. Company’s senior executives must be recognized as the change leaders.

2. Identify the initial change leadership group (target 20-25% employees).

3. Develop a shared passionate Vision.

4. Create an action-results focus moving the company toward its Vision.

5. Empower everyone to deal with obstacles preventing forward progress.

6. Celebrating “Wins” as they occur will help to silence the victims.

7. Refuse to allow complacency to stop forward action to your Vision.

8. Authenticity and emotional intelligence are key hiring/promotion considerations.

Our Reality

The Reality

We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.

Enhanced Awareness

Metacognition is the ability to know whether you know. Individuals with poor metacognition never understand that they do not understand, nor do they realize what is missing.

The Amygdala is found in our old “lizard brains.” It scans our sensory inputs for possible threats the same way it has for millions of years. It lives in constant fear and would rather minimize danger than maximize reward. The development of our EI competencies enables us to better manage this fear response and embrace change.

When you experience an “amygdala hijack” you can not focus on job demands you can only think about what is troubling you. Our body gets flooded with the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline as we go into “fight, flight or freeze” mode. During these attacks we revert to our unconscious habits and beliefs. The amygdala often overreacts in ways we later regret. In this challenging and ever changing economic climate many people are operating day-to-day in what amounts to a chronic, low grade amygdala hijack. Awareness is the first step in dealing with these attacks. If you do not notice that you are in the midst of a hijack you have no chance of getting back to emotional balance until the hijack has run its course. Hijacks can last for seconds, minutes, hours, days or weeks.\The development of emotional intelligence inhibits amygdala driven fear impulses increasing energy and engagement. A study by Barbara Fredrickson at the University of North Carolina found that people and teams that flourish have a ratio (5:1) of at least five positive emotional events for every negative one (amygdala hijack).

WISDOM is developed within a neural network called the basal ganglia located in a very primitive part of our unconscious brain. It extracts decision rules from our past actions. What actions worked well and which did not. Our accumulated life wisdom is stored in this primitive circuitry. The basal ganglia also has strong connections to the gastrointestinal tract – the gut. Emotionally intelligent leaders rely heavily on these “gut instincts” when making important decisions.

The subconscious mind has immense power to make rapid and correct decisions.  Our ability to make accurate instinctive choices based on thin slices of reality highlights the importance of practice and experience. Rapid cognition is about the kind of subconscious thinking that happens in a blink of an eye.

The Sunday Night BluesEnergy Vampires Are Sabotaging Your Company’s Results

Employees can readily identify the energy vampires within theirorganizations. Many managers don't know what to do with them. Thisallows them to breed and fester. Rarely do they realize how much thesevictims are costing their company by sabotaging morale, performance, productivity, and customer service. They are sucking the positive energyand life out of the organization, one negative remark or action at a time.

An Example: Bullying …

Page 25: Embracing Change, \'The New Economic Currency\

The bullying that occurs in organizations and schools is caused by individuals seeking to create chaotic negative energy environments. Employees and students can readily identify the bullies. They affect morale, employee and customer engagement. The development of authentic, emotionally intelligence individuals will eliminate bullying activities.

Criticism and fear always accompanies individual and organizational change. Stop being afraid of fear. The very nature of leadership is that you are not doing what has been done before. If you were you would not be leading. Once you choose to lead you will be under huge internal and external pressure to reconsider. To compromise, to dumb it down or give up. That’s the world’s job. To get you to be quiet and follow the herd. The status quo is the status quo for a reason.
