Introduction to EMbaffle® Technology

A Shell developed technology initially for shell & tube heat exchangers

to reduce fouling mechanisms

Tubes supported by expanded metal baffles

The fluid flows parallel to the tubes, through the grid openings

Characteristics of EMbaffle® Technology

All heat exchangers

 Uniform longitudinal flow shell-side

 3-Dimensional shape of expanded

metal enhances the heat transfer

 Countercurrent flow

 Increased heat transfer (OHTC)

 Available in commercially available

software (HTRI)

Utilises TEMA tolerances and applicable recommendations

Physically identical to segmental Shell&Tube heat exchanger, no

pressure part modification

Fouling services

No stagnant zones, no (solid) fouling build-up

Expanded Metal & Material Options

Expanded metal

 Widely applied (low end applications)

Easy to produce with excellent dimensional repeatability

 No waste material during production

 Relatively stiff

 Large variations in dimensions possible

Typical materials available (but not limited):

 Stainless Steel – 304, 316, 321 + more

Duplex SS (SAF2205), Super Duplex (SAF 2507),

Copper, Copper Alloys, CuNi, Bronze, Brass

 Aluminum, Titanium

 Hastelloy, Inconel, Incoloy, Monel,

 Carbon Steel

Results EMbaffle® field test

Gross Energy saving of EMbaffle HE: 60 TeraJoule per year (113 k€/yr)

 Gross CO2

reduction of EMbaffle HE: 4 kt CO2 per year (86 k€/yr)

OHTC: Initial: 8% higher than segmental

After 14 months: 36% higher than segmental

Duty: Initial: same duty (with 18 % less surface area)

After 14 months: 32 % higher duty

 Pressure drop: 20 % lower

 Rate of fouling: Halved

Optimum operation time without cleaning: Doubled

Condition assessment after 17 month: no defects
