excellent 2013, you’ve all made it worthwhile!
Glyn Williams 15+ Section Head
Irish National Sailing School
This time last year we were anxiously awaiting the return of Junior Club members hoping that the new format for the 15+ Years Section introduced in Summer 2012 would have been successful and have instilled a love of sailing (and the messing that goes along with it) in the 15+ Years Group. We need not have worried as the Spring Summer Term of 2013 was very well attended by 15+ Members. In fact, that is the trend for all 15+ Summer Courses, Special Events and the Junior Club. We are delighted that every week 15+ Students and Members attend our courses and programmes, and indeed we are very grateful that you continue to choose to do so. We have experienced the busiest year in the age group
since 2008 and are back to numbers that rival those of the Celtic Tiger hay days! One year on and we are extremely confident of a continued success into 2014 and are looking forward to welcoming members back to the Junior Club after Christ-mas and indeed new sailors both on Junior Club Programmes and Summer Sailing Courses. Personally, I’m hugely grateful to the sailors who turn up on all our courses, events and at the Junior Club Sailing. The efforts of the team of Instructors, to ensure you all have a great time every time you come sailing, and leave knowing a bit more than you did before, are validated by the fact you return again and again! Thank you all for an

In 2013 we launched a full programme of extra events after tentatively trialing a few in 2012. We couldn't have been happier about how they went!
15+ Annual Regatta and Sail-a-thon in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital
The event which tool place on Saturday the 6th of April saw the 15+ Years Group participate in the charity Sail-a-thon through the medium of a day long Regatta. The group was split according to ability so that everyone was racing against opponents of equal ability. Racing was excellent, which Race Officer (Glyn Williams) and Assistant Race Officer (Frank Cleere) both commenting on the excellent sailing across all groups. Of particular note was the excellent starts that all participants made! After all, in a race, a good start is half the battle!
Howth Trip
This event saw the Junior Club members take to the 1720s and cross the bay. Three 1720s full headed out the harbor early on the morning of Saturday the 1st of June. After a very enjoyable sail in the good weather we berthed at Howth Marina and went ashore for lunch. Glyn reports an excellent fish and chips was had. On the way back we decided to have a little unofficial race. Both Glyn and Frank’s boats elected to hoist spinnakers and after a small bit of close quarters maneuvering Frank came out on top (after being a little bit sideways). For all his troubles, Glyn ended up with a twist in his kite that all aboard agreed had been cemented in. This left the other boat, skippered by Emma/Enda/Conor to storm into second place. Frank’s crew never really had a challenge after that, and were in such need of one they took on the DBSC Cruis-ers III fleet (and passed all of them in one leg). Their
triumphant return into Dun Laoghaire was only blighted by a small spot of trawling they undertook with their spinnaker during the drop (by small, we mean enormous!)

Greystones Cruise
After the new Marina opened in Greystones Harbour the wonderful idea to make a trip aboard the 1720s to it was decided upon. Planned for Friday the 5th of July, the weather was certainly on our side. This event saw a mix of the Summer Course Participants as well as Junior Club Members. Again 4 1720s set off early on a long cruise that took in Dalkey Sound, Shankill, Bray head and Greystones Harbour. After some issues with anchoring (yeah a bit embarrassing that none of the 5 instructors there could successfully anchor a boat) it was elected that crews be ferried ashore in the Safety Boat. It certainly was a tough sail as the fair winds gave way to an excellent breeze from the south east allowing some exhilarating sailing back to Dun Laoghaire!

We are delighted to say that 2013 saw the arrival of a few new things for the 15+ Years Group to get to grips with. Introduced with the aim of promoting trapeze training the Laser Vago and two To-paz Magnos quickly became very popular with members and certainly have been put to excellent use this year!

Congratulations to all those who took part in the 2013 Sail-a-thon which in total raised €6,089.73 in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital. This is the largest total we have raised since the economic crash and the Irish National Sailing School would like to extend a huge thank you for all those who were involved in the sailing, fundraising and behind the scenes activity making it the success it was.
This was the first Sail-a-thon to take place since 2009 and the 15+ Group got to experience a first since 2009 too, that

ambitious series of programmes and course for 2014. We will focus mainly on Seamanship Skills programmes, boat handling programmes and trapeze and spinnaker courses, ensuring the more advanced sailors in the 15+ Section continue to improve their skills!
After a review of Training carried out by Manager, Kenneth Rumball, and 15+ Section Head, Glyn Williams, a descision was made to trial a number of advanced courses in Summer 2013 and to give the option of continued training on Trapeeze and Spinnaker throughout the Junior Club. We are delighted to announce these courses have proved both popular and enjoyable, for students and coaches alike. Further to the success this year, we will announce an even more
