“Follow the Money” The Kentucky Derby

Murder Mystery ! This will be our biggest event of the year and

our #1 fundraiser! Join us for an evening of

Mystery, Intrigue, Murder, Libations and Laugh-

ter. Don’t forget to wear your fancy hats! There

will be prizes for the best Male & Female Derby,

as well as for the 1st person to solve the mys-

tery! A Silent Auction packed full of items for

everyone. It promises to be an evening that you

won’t want to miss! Tickets are $45.00 each.

Rich Riba and Bill Bodnar are both retired teachers and are hosting, critiquing & discussing each movie.

Join them on Wednesday’s at 1pm. July Features, in order, will be; “Heaven Knows Mr. Allison ”,

“The Patriot”, and “Stripes”. Bill & Rich will explain “how to watch a movie”, what great scenes to

look for, what great lines to listen for, etc. There will be open discussions as well as trivia before each

movie. The Art Theater is our Popcorn Sponsor!

Walk to the “Beat of the Oldies” and join the Walking

Club on Thursday’s at 11:00 in the front gym……..it’s a fun

time and never to late to start walking into great health!

There are over 50 members and 3 different teams walk-

ing across the United States. They are now on their way to Flori-

da! Check out their map in the work-out room. Club members,

please make sure to log your miles in the binder. Thank you to

Aimee Schallenkamp from Home Instead Senior Care and Tricia

Catlin from Brentwood at Hobart for sponsoring and organizing

the Walking Club.

Tricia and Aimee will are planning a Walking Club Party on Thurs-

day July 12th at 11:00. They will be providing healthy snacks and

you will have the opportunity to get to know your fellow walkers

better and help motivate one another.

Camaraderie, Excitement and Fitness for Seniors

Tuesday’s at 9am in the Front Gym with Rudy

Pavletic. Increase your health potential , with natu-

ral healing Chi-Gong. Accumulate energy & leave

refreshed and relaxed! Wear comfortable clothing.

No worries……. if you can't stand long this class can

be done from a chair. Open Enrollment. Join in at

any time!

Tai Chi

Tooooo much Fun!!!! Zumba Seniorized! Kathy Allen is a fab-

ulous teacher and great motivator in this class. Zumba is not only fun,

but a great way to get in shape. Join her on Friday’s from 11-12 for an

exhilarating class. Kathy plans on keeping her schedule throughout the

summer however if it becomes too hot in the gym individual classes

may be canceled or moved across the street to the basement of the

Methodist Church. Ping Pong Lessons & Play

The play is on! Tuesdays from 1-3pm. Italo Ivaldi is a

tournament Ping Pong Player and he is teaching &

organizing play for our members. Whether you are a

beginner or have experience come on out and enjoy

the play! If you have a preferred paddle, bring it with,

if not, we have them. Ping Pong is located in the front

gym. We now have 2 tables.

Tossing the bags are such a big hit that we now have 2 sets of

Boards ……..thanks to Dave & Penny Hiestand.

Join the fun in the Front Gym every Wednesday at 12:00.

The Wii Game is set up in the Theater & Music

Room and ready to go. Are you up for the chal-

lenge? Bowling, Tennis, Golf and Baseball. Play

anytime that the room is open! See Pam

Walking Club

Laughter Yoga

Kim Kopcha is a certified instructor for Laughter

Yoga. A worldwide phenomenon, combining medi-

tation with yogic breathing and exercise. Proven to

strengthen the immune and respiratory systems. It

is used as an antidote to depression & anxiety,

improves blood pressure as well as sense of humor

and self confidence.

Kim will be here on Monday July 16th at 1:00.

Kathy Allen embarked on her 2nd FUN class here. On Wednesdays at

11:00 she will be in the Main Gym teaching ALL types of line dancing.

Some classes may have to be canceled or relocated to the Methodist

Church across the street throughout the summer if it becomes to hot in

the gym to dance. However, Kathy plans on keeping her schedule the

same all season. Open enrollment……..get in line anytime!!!

Come to Sing each Tuesday at 10 am. Evelyn

Lisek is our Director. Accompaniest Vince

Arcuri will be leaving soon. He will be back

occasionally, just to play for the fun & enjoy-

ment of all members! His concluding per-

formance will be on Tuesday July 10th at

10:15am, along with our very own MRC

Choir. Come early to get a good seat. You

won’t want to miss Vince’s farewell perfor-

mance! If you are interested in joining the

choir please feel free to stop in on any Tues-

day! Vince…..we will miss you!

Tuesday’s from 11:00 to 12:00.

Ruth Crawford 942-7671 and Judy

Klinedinst 942-9830 are your coordinators.

Both of them have lots of knowledge and

resources. This class is open enrollment,

enter at any session, whether you are a

beginner or an experienced researcher.

Come in to learn or to share ideas.

Our Art teacher Carol will be taking the

summer off but there will be a Summer Art

Club for those that are currently members

in Carols class. Art Club will be meeting

Wednesdays from 8:30-11:30, now through

September 5th. Club members will be re-

sponsible for bringing their own projects

and supplies as well as setting up and clean-

ing when they are finished. Regular Art

Classes will resume on September 12th.

Genealogy Club

We have restructured the computer classes in order to allow the

instructors and seniors to spend more time in class! Our classes will now

be one 2 hour class instead of two I hour classes. Julie Mortier is still

teaching on Thursday’s and Dr. April Miller Cripliver from Ivy Tech will be

teaching an additional class on Monday’s beginning July 9th from 12-2.

Dr. Cripliver holds multiple computer certifications from Microsoft and

COMP TIA. Each class will last for 4 weeks. The waiting lists will be used

to fill classes & you will be called in the order that you signed up. If you

accept a reserved time when you are called it is important to attend

each class or you will lose out on valuable information and someone

else will have missed the opportunity to attend.

Seniors……..Keeping our Minds Moving!!!!!

Julie Mortier coordinates our book club which meets on the 3rd Thursday

of each month from 10-11am. The new book in June, “The Shadow Di-

vers” by Robert Kurson, can be picked up at the July 19tt meeting. Please

make sure that the last book, “Sarah’s Key” is returned on or before the

19th or you will be subject to a late charge!

Birders Club coordinator Gene Coleman will be holding a birders

meeting Monday July 9th at 10:30 in the MRC dining room. With the

warmer weather there will be many new birds to observe. Please also join

him on Wednesday July 11th for a bird count. Meet at the Center front

doors.

Spanish teacher Wanda Schrader will be returning to her regular

classes in September. To keep up your practice, MRC member Mike

Cusumano, is holding another review session on Monday July 30th at

10:00. Afterwards the class will be enjoying lunch together at Agave

Restaurant Downtown Hobart.

The goals of Legacy Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Council is to serve our community, give to those who serve

and to create a future of philanthropic leaders. Legacy’s Community Initiatives Officer Barry Tyler, Jr. will bringing

8 –10 youth council members to help serve soup and to help with the clean-up on Tuesday July 10th . We will be

giving them a tour of our Center to show them what our great mentor of philanthropy, Maria Reiner, has done for us!

Lt. Jack Grennes would like our help with the HPD bi-weekly

Newsletter. Join us every other Friday to help staple & pre-

pare the newsletters for deliveries. This month we will be

meeting on Friday July 13th, and 27th at 9:00 a.m.

MRC Partners with the Hobart Police Department

Our very own member & Retired MA, Marie Lawrence will be

checking our blood pressures. She will provide you with a

pocket chart to keep track and take to your doctor. She will

be here on July 17th from 10-12.

Maribeth Bultema R,N. from Home Care Services of North-

west Indiana will be offering FREE Blood Sugar Testing to our

members on Tuesday July 3rd from 10 to Noon. She will also

be checking your Blood Pressures for Marie on the 3rd.

The HPD provides a unique service

to Hobart’s senior citizens who live alone, who are disa-

bled or homebound. Once enrolled a volunteer will place a

daily phone call to you to verify your well being. If no an-

swer is received, alert procedures go into effect. The Safe-

ty Call Network is free. Call Lt. Jack Grennes to enroll, 942-

1125 X 1070. Group Presentations are also available.

info rack near the front door. Always remember to keep

your medical & emergency info up to date.

Health and Safety

Blood Sugar Testing Secure the Call is an Emergency only Cell Phone Program for

Seniors and Abused Woman. If you or anyone you know is in

need of a cell phone for emergency use, please let us know.

Sign-up at the front activity tables or call 947-1864 and re-

quest a free emergency phone.

If you have an old cell phone or charger that you would like

to donate, please place them in the phone barrel up front.

We will also have a barrel at the Summer Market. Once

they are full, we will send them to “Secure the Call” to be re-

programmed as 911 emergency phones.

Blood Pressure Checks

Bingo is Back!

Well Jane Massa has gone done it!!! She is bringing

back BINGO. This time we will be using prizes only.

Gather small useful items ranging from $2—$3 each,

from the Dollar Store or from home, items such as:

paper or plastic products, foil and plastic wraps,

canned or boxed products, kitchen & bathroom clean-

ers, dish towels, sugar free items, etc.

Jane will be hosting a meeting for Bingo Volunteers on

Friday July 13th at 1:00. If you are interested in help-

ing out as a caller or a runner, please join us in the

dining room.

The 1st Bingo Games will be on Friday July 27th at

1:00. Bingo will be played on every other Friday (the

2nd & 4th Friday) , just opposite of Bunco Fridays!

The IRON CHEF BREAKFAST COOKOFF! The

HFD will sponsor breakfast on August 9th and

the HPD on the 23rd. Who will serve up the

best breakfast? You decide!

Soup Tuesdays Volunteers and Sponsors will be preparing delicious hot soup with different

breads, cornbread or crackers along with dessert every Tuesday from 11-

1:00pm. You can purchase tickets in advance or at the door…$3.00 per

member. Thank you to the 2 Sue’s! Sue Miller and Sue Cooper for coordi-

nating this special day! If you have any soup to go containers at home don’t

forget to bring them in, we are starting to run low!

This month’s potluck luncheon is scheduled for

Monday July 16th. We will be serving “Cold Cut

Sandwiches”. Bring a side dish or dessert. There

is NO cost for the potluck and you do not have to

make a dish but we ask that you make a donation

of whatever you can afford for the lunch. Every-

one is welcome! Good Friends sharing Good

Food. Join us in the dining room around Noon.

The Dinner Club will be meeting again at 4:00

on Tuesday July 17th at Kelsey’s Steak House

in Portage on the northeast corner of Ridge

Road & Swanson. Please sign up at the front

desk before Friday the 13th so that club coor-

dinator Marty Ladd can make reservations.

MRC Cookbook Committee

The MRC is compiling a cookbook of its favorite recipes. Our

cookbook committee has left recipe submission forms at the

front desk for our members to complete. We are extending the return date

to July 27th. When turning in your recipe forms please remember to include

an estimate on how many books you might be ordering. With all the talented

cooks and bakers we have this is sure to be an amazing cookbook!

for a bargain at only $3.00 per member! You can purchase tickets in

advance or at the door. Thank you Barb Stokes for coordinating this

fabulous program, as well as ALL of our wonderful volunteers who

help her.

Breakfast ClubBreakfast Club

Summer Market Hobart’s Summer Market will be open on

our beautiful lakefront at Festival Park each Thursday beginning June

7th through September from 2:00-7:00. To help increase our pres-

ence in the community the MRC will have a booth at the market every other week to

meet and greet the public, sell used books, and hand out MRC info! 4 volunteers

will be needed each day to cover a 2 1/2 hour shift. If you would like to sign up to

work at the market please check the sign up sheet up front for available shifts.

MRC Dinner Club

Thursday July 26th at 5:00. Bring your vacuum cleaners, small buckets &

rags! We will be vacuuming and dusting the Center. We have plenty of

cleaning supplies……..we just need people power! There is a sign-up sheet at

the front tables. If you can’t make it in to sign-up…..JUST SHOW UP!

help you become an expert player. Experienced or new to the

game, join in at anytime…...There is lot’s of room for anyone at

any level of play.

is open to every level of player and our very own

Dave Bigler will be there to answer any questions

you may have. Dave was awarded a Life Master

Certificate in 2008 and a Bronze

Life Master in 2009 and has years

of Bridge teaching experience.

Mexican Train Mexican Train is a dom-

ino game that is easy to learn and a lot of fun!

Jerrie Engel is the coordinator. Every Tuesday at

1:00 in the Social Room. Beginners or

experienced players are welcome!

Mah Jonng

Would you like to learn how to play Mah Jonng? Join Thasia Brandt and

Pat Hicks on Monday’s from 11:30-1:30 for instruction and

beginners play. Experienced play will be on Tuesdays from

12-3:30. Everyone is welcome!

Canasta will be played every Thursday at 12:30. Club coordina-

tor Jerrie Engle will not be here for lessons in June and July but

please still come in for open play. New classes will resume in

September!

theft each year. Identity theft occurs when someone

uses your personally identifying information, like your

name, Social Security number, or credit card number,

without your permission, to commit fraud or other

crimes. You could suffer adverse consequences and be

held accountable for the thief’s actions. identity theft is

not always detectable by the victim. Don’t become a

Last month Betsy Cuellar spoke to us about

“Depression”. This month she is back and talking about

“Laughter” and how it is a powerful antidote to stress,

pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster and more de-

pendably to bring your mind and body back into balance

then a good laugh. Join us at 10:00 on Wednesday July

11th as Betsy explains the many benefits of laughter

and how it can relax you, release endorphins, and even

boost your immune system! You won’t want to miss

this!!!! Snacks provided.

ries. There are 6 dimensions of Aging & Living Well”.

Moving is actually the best medicine! Regular physi-

cal activity is the closest thing to the fountain of

youth. Age-related changes can be reversed or

slowed. Frailty is reversible. It doesn’t matter how

old you are and it doesn’t matter what shape you are

in right now. It is never too late to confront your

own obstacles and get active!

“Free” Dental Screenings

Thursday July 19th

From 9:00 am to Noon

Dr. Viktoria (Torrie Cox) from Anderson Dental Pro-

fessionals will be here to do free

“Visual Clinical Exams”.

This will include a look at soft tissues and Veloscope

(oral cancer screenings).

Anderson Dental used to be located next to the old

Jansen’s Fruit Market and is now located on Route

30 just east of 51 in an all new state of the art

dental facility.

Appointments will be scheduled 10 minutes apart

so please sign up at the front tables. Dr. Torrie will

be able to see about 18 people. Use the waiting list

also, as she may be will be willing to stay longer if

there is a need!
