We had 5 teams represent OLRS at the recent Hutt City Xrace which was awesome and the weather certainly didn’t disappoint. There was loads of fun for everyone, some of the challenges included: memory challenges, 3 legged race, team tug of war and even one that required the young ones to lead the blindfolded adults through a maze.

Due to having 5 teams enter we received one free team entry. As you may remember we ran a raffle for the free entry in the newsletter, unfortunately we didn’t receive any entries so the entry fee of $66 was then donated to the FOS committee to go towards the playground. So a huge thanks to all those that took part and we hope that you all had as much fun as these painted faces did.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) at Our Lady of the Rosary School

Thankyou once again to all our families who contributed to the recent Bully Prevention Survey and attended the information evening the other week. Our Lady of the Rosary School has been part of the nation-wide PB4L initiative (Positive Behaviour for Learning) since 2015. The PB4L programme supports New Zealand schools to build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. This initiative is about reflecting and changing the environment, systems and practices we have in place to support our students to make positive behaviour and learning choices for their wellbeing. At OLR we have a schoolwide classroom and playground system to support positive behaviour for learning, appropriate for the different year levels with our school virtues of Faith, Hope, Love and Charity being the driver to our PB4L Programme. We have a range of systems to affirm our students positively; Gold cards, Academic awards, weekly Virtue awards, schoolwide end of term reward day and in class reward systems. We asked a group of our Year 3-8 students about Bullying and Wellbeing to support us in planning ahead. Here are the children’s responses. What is your understanding of Bullying What our students said…….. purposely attacking harming accusing and hurting others Pushing people and physically bullying name calling hurting someone verbally, physically and mentally continuously and purposely picking on someone and winding them up just for a reaction popping personal bubble repeated harm or abuse or verbal harm to one or more people Cyberbullying Purposefully making people feel not comfortable or part of the group Disrespecting property What is your understanding of wellbeing What our students said…….. Feeling comfortable safe and confident in your school, home, public environment being kind to people Following in the footsteps of Jesus Showing the virtues Having a healthy self-esteem Making good decisions being confident respecting and listening to others opposite of bullying Positive learning and growth mindset Happiness Bullying Survey Over the course of the last 3 years our year 5-8 students have taken part in Bully surveys to identify areas we need to address and support for the wellbeing of all our students. This year we included our Year 3-4 students to take the survey. From the recent surveys we identified areas for us to address. We are currently addressing swearing and name calling with the Year 3-8 levels. We have identified with the students, that name calling comes in all forms from nicknames to unkind name calling. We encourage you as parents and caregivers to please support us with these areas at home for us to eliminate these concerns.

Within the school we have a range of systems to support students to inform adults of their concerns: Classroom suggestion/mailbox Circle time Encouraging students to inform the teachers within the class or on duty, as soon as the incident takes

place at break or directly after Reflection Journal ‘Smart Start’ - life skills for Early learners Role playing The following programmes are implemented to support our students wellbeing: Bikes in schools Scooter Training PE- Fitness, various sport initiatives eg. basketball, touch rugby etc. Enviroschool- Enabling students to be part of a sustainable future. Life Education Bus - Children are taught about their body, friendships, their identity, food and nutrition

and helpful and harmful substances. Keeping Ourselves Safe programmes, DARE, CHOICES and Puberty programmes.

Please contact us here at OLR if you require clarification of the information regarding Bully prevention and Wellbeing.

Well done to all students that participated in the Touch Rugby competition this term. We had 10 teams from Year 1-8 competing in the Friday competition. Thank you to all the coaches/managers for the organisation and time you have put into each team.

Middle Syndicate Education Outside of the Classroom (EOTC) week

We have some exciting activities planned for next week!

Wednesday 4 April - Build a Shelter Day! Students are going to be challenged to work together in a small group to build a shelter from recycled materials to experience how others are living in poverty.

Start collecting materials at home that you can use for this – cardboard, maybe a tarpaulin or blanket! Don’t forget to bring them to school the first day back to school after Easter!

Children are also asked to wear mufti on this day and to bring a gold coin to help support Caritas.

Thursday 5 April - Trip to Kaitoke! Thank you to all the parents who have said they’d like to come on our trip with us. We look forward to seeing you all at school Thursday morning! Please make sure that all students have a good lunch, a water bottle, sunblock and a SUNHAT! Students are also asked to wear their PE gear (or their school pinafore with black shorts if they haven’t got any).
