TheHongKongInstituteofEducation

Demand for arts and culturalmanagementtraininghas increasedsignificantly intherecentdecade.With theexcitingdevelopmentof theWestKowloonCulturalDistrictandHongKong’svisiontobean internationalculturalhub,HongKongisinauniquepositiontobecomearegionalcentreforartsmanagementtrainingandrelatedprofessional development. Our response tocurrent industryneedsaswellascontributiontoHongKong’sfutureisthedevelopmentofanewtwo-yearpart-timeExecutiveMasterofArtsinArtsManagementandEntrepreneurship(EMA[AME])programme–thefirstandONLYExecutiveMasterofArtsProgrammeinHongKong.

Theprogrammewas launchedsuccessfully in2013, andaddresses the special challengesconfronting today’s leadersandmanagersofartsandculturalenterprises inHongKongandthe region, including issuesof globalization,entrepreneurshipandaudienceengagement.It aims to deepen and strengthen students’professionalknowledgeand insightpertainingto the vital aspects of ar ts administration,

Astheonlyacademicdepartment inHongKong focusingonCulturalandCreativeArts ineducation, theDepartmentofCulturalandCreativeArtshaspartneredwithGoldsmiths,UniversityofLondon,oneof thepioneers inpursuing trainingandresearchrelatingtoentrepreneurshipinartsandculturalorganizations.TheGuardianUniversityGuiderecentlyplacedGoldsmiths intheworld'stop100,andtheUK'stop20,universitiesfortheartsandhumanities.Goldsmiths isbestknownforcoursesand research relating tocreativityandculture,andhasareputationforproducingwell-knownartists. Toensurethatstudentsgetthemostupdatedandpracticalknowledge, theprogrammeistaughtbyaninternationalacademicteamfromHongKong,Britain,USAandTaiwan.

TheHongKong InstituteofEducation (HKIEd) isoneoftheeightUniversityGrantsCommittee(UGC)-funded institutions inHongKong. Itwasgranted“Self-Accrediting”statusin2004bytheHongKongCouncilforAccreditationofAcademicandVocationalQualifications(HKCAAQA),andisthelargestproviderof teachereducation inHongKong,with itsmaincampusatTaiPo,andsatellitecampusatTseungKwanO.

TheHKIEdhas3 faculties (FacultyofLiberalArtsandSocial Sciences, Faculty of Education andHumanDevelopmentandFacultyofHumanities),aGraduateSchooland17departmentsofferingmulti-disciplinaryprogrammesfromcertificatetodoctorallevel.Over1,000studentsareservicedbymorethan400academicand teachingstaff,ofwhich90%holdearneddoctorates.

TheHKIEd has the only academic departmentfocusingonculturalandcreativeartseducationinHongKong. ItgivesmegreatpleasuretoworktogetherwithProf.SamuelLeongandMr.GeraldLidstoneinputtingtogetherthisprogrammeinordertoaddresstheuniquetrainingneedsofexperiencedarts/culturalmanagers.IhavebeenprivilegedtohavetaughtartsmanagementformorethantwodecadesinHongKongandMainlandChina,withseveralhundredofmyex-studentsnowservingasculturalmanagersinHongKong,Macau,Taiwan,SingaporeandMainlandChina.Thekeyguidingprinciplesforthisnewprogrammehavebeen:

Due to theirheavyworkload,manyculturalmanagersopt to learn throughshort coursesandworkshops.Whilstshort-termprofessionaltrainingprogrammesandoverseasinternshipsmayenhanceprofessionalknowledgeandinternationaloutlookquickly,theyusuallyhavelimitedimpactonthecriticalandanalyticalskillsoftheparticipants.Onlyawell-structuredaward-bearingacademicprogrammecangivestudentsaholisticperspectiveofarts/culturalmanagementandimprovehis/hercritical,analyticalandmetacognitionskills.Ananalogywouldbetooffersomeonefishtostophimfromstarving,buttheobjectiveshouldbetoturnhim/herintoafishermanovertime.

Withtherapiddevelopmentofcultural industriesandbuildingofnumerous cultural facilities inHongKongandtheregion,high-levelmanagementexpertiseandinsightsonhowto improveculturalsoftwarearespeciallyneeded.Demandforqualityarts/culturalmanagement trainingprogrammeswhichcater to thespecialneedsofHongKongand the region isunprecedented.Against thisbackgroundtheChiefExecutiveoftheHongKongSpecialAdministrativeRegionrecentlyearmarkedspecial fundingtostrengthenarts managementtrainingandHongKong ispoised tobecomearegional centre for artsmanagement trainingandprofessionaldevelopment. Thesuccessfulpresentationof theannualCulturalLeadershipSummit inHongKong in the last fewyears isamilestone.

It isapitythatnoneoftheexistingpost-graduateaward-bearingartsmanagement programmesinHongKong(andfew in theregion) is targetedat experienced in-service artsmanagers. TheEMA(AME)programmeisthusspeciallydesignedtocaterfortheneedsofexperiencedin-servicearts/culturalmanagersfromHongKongandtheregion.Buildingon thepriormanagementexperiencesofparticipants, theprogrammeaimsto integratetheories and practices of artsmanagement,artseducationandentrepreneurship. Throughastudent-centered learningandself-reflectionapproach , s tuden ts a re gu ided to makesubstantialadvancementon theirprofessionaloutlookandpersonaldevelopment. It isbelievedthat graduatesof thisprogrammewill bewellequippedtobecomesecond-tierculturalleadersinHongKongandtheregion.

Ouraimistonurtureexperiencedarts/culturalmanagerstobeinformedbyaninternationaloutlookandtoacquiretheknowledge,skills,understandingandcommitmenttomakeartsandculturalenterprisesmorerelevanttocontemporarysociety.

Onsuccessfulcompletionoftheprogramme,participantswillbeableto:

a. explainthedifferentforcesinthearts/cultural ecology and ways to effect change,includingadvocacy;

b. masterthemajor aspects of arts managementincludingstrategicmanagement,programming( i n c l ud i n g l e a r n i n g and pa r t i c i p a t i onprogrammes),humanresourcesmanagement,financialmanagement,marketing, audiencebuilding, lawandcontracts, fundraising,crisismanagementandaudiencedevelopment;

Theclassscheduleandmodeof learninghavebeenspeciallydesigned tosuit thebusyscheduleofexperiencedculturalmanagersfromtheregion.Participantscontinuetheircareerswhiletheystudy.

Blendedlearningisanintegralteachingappraochoftheprogrammethatblendsface-to-faceinstructionwithavarietyof technology-mediateddelivery.Twointensive10-dayteachingperiodswillbescheduledeachyearinFebruaryandAugust. Inbetween the teachingmodules,blendedlearningwillbeconductedthroughe-platforms.Asignificantpartoftheparticipants’assessment,bothindividualandgroup-based,willbeconductedthroughe-platforms.Blendedlearninginthisprogrammetypicallyincludestudyingmaterialsprovidedthroughtheinternet,submissionofassignments,discussionofgroupprojectsandcommentingontheworkofpeers.Thiswillenableparticipantstofocusonclassroomlearning,face-to-facediscussionsandvisitsduringtheintensiveteachingperiods.Participants’learningprocesscancontinuethroughoutthetwoyears(withshortbreaks)withoutboundedbytheteachingperiods.

This programme is offered on a self-funded basis.
