3. MY WORK EXPERIENCES

17 to 22 Dec 2011 Chan’s Marketing and AdvertisingI was employed to distribute flyers. During the employed period, I worked hard in distributing the flyers to more than twenty blocks of flats. I worked for an average of nine hours per day. I was appointed as a team leader during the employment period. As a team, I was responsible in assigning locations to my team members and ensuring that they work based on scheduled timing and kept tracks of the numbers of blocks that they have distributed flyers to.

My employer was extremely satisfied with my job performance and responsibility and complimented highly on my efficiency. I was invited to work for him again during my next school holidays.

13 to 24 June 2012 Super Car StudioI was employed for a dual role of a car washer and that of a

sales assistant. I was also appointed as a team leader. Apart from washing cars and soliciting for sales, I have to assign jobs to my team members and also ensure that the

team members are performing based on the assigned schedule. In average,

I handled six cars a day, and worked up to thirteen hours per day.

My employer complimented on my diligence on my last day at work and told me that he will definitely want me to work for him again.

Eventually learnt the 7 necessary station(cashier, cleaner, fryer, prep food, packer, mixer) and helped out whenever there is a need, while teaching new part-timers how to do their respective stations. Mainly focused on barter-fryer where I have to be able to race against time and cook in estimation to accommodate customers’ need. (Peak hour more, non-peak hour lesser. Know how to see the ‘time’) Maintained high standards of customer service during high-volume, fast-paced operations. free. Appreciated by them. (Keeping in contact till now, brought to dinner with them)

Dec 2014 – Jan 2015 Self EmployedI started to work for myself using the skills that I’ve learn in previous jobs and imported in basketballs to sell. I handled the whole process myself from coordinating with the factory to shipping and distribution as sales. I sourced for goods and platforms online to distribute the basketballs, as well as handling out ‘flyers’ to people at potential sites. From this, I learnt better how to handle customers with proper communication and use their feedback as a method of improvement. As well as handling situations that may be out of the blue, as things are not always going as expected.

I managed to perform to my goals and sold all 200 basketballs within a month upon arrival. I learnt to work alone and plan and execute things out in a systematic manner.

I have joined Table Tennis since I entered Dunearn Secondary School. Being given the chance as Vice-Captain of Table Tennis (C-Boy) during 2012, has allowed me to hone my leadership skills through ensuring that the team turns up for training and are not playing a fool during training. My vision for the team came about here.

In 2013, I was given the chance of being Vice-Captain (B-Boy), and my vision of the team achieving better standards in terms of discipline and skills slowly was taking place. Working with the B-Boys, we came about a change in the discipline of the Table-Tennis by implementing new rules such as being ready mentally and physically for the commence of training unlike repeated reminders in the past to be ready for training. At the same time, together with members of the CCA, we managed to clear unnecessary items from the CCA’s storeroom, to make it more room and to be more organized. During this period of time, my team and I started the ‘Study Group’ for Table-Tennis CCA members after collaborating with teachers, whereby we have to attend it compulsorily to ensure that good habit will be obtained and to attain better results academically. My team and I often train with our juniors as well to hone their techniques and occasionally there will be games organized by my team and I to deepen the team bond within the CCA.

I believe that for a CCA to be efficient and effective, discipline has to be implemented and team work within the CCA is very important.

Student leadership

I have joined the 9th Student Council team on 2013. I believe that by joining the team, I will be able to further improve my leadership skills which are very important when I work in the society. With leadership, one can lead a team better and achieve greater heights with the team. With this, I strongly believe that leadership skills are very important. Hence, joining the team proved to be right as I have learnt skills from the team and teachers in-charge that are unattainable in the classrooms, which are useful and applicable in my future participations.

Embarking on this journey led me to learn about the cultures and way of living of South Koreans. Working with Malay students, I have learnt how to communicate better and understand better the needs of other cultural students.

Overseas School Learning Trip (CIP) 2013

I have learnt about the lifestyles of Cambodian orphans and how to work together better as a team to achieve higher efficiency in carrying out activities while at the same time, reflect and learn upon my experience of communication barriers. Building new cement floors on top of sharp stones was part of the learning which led to me reflect upon how grateful we should be for having floors with barely no harms in Singapore. Gratitude was definitely one big part of the learning from the experience.

Sports Camp 2013

Attending this camp as a facilitator has allowed me to show my leadership capabilities whereby I am able to build up team bond within a group of strangers with my interesting ideas. For example, I was the referee for the Frisbee activity and twisting the rules allowed me to better bond the

group that was attending the activity. From this camp, I have also learnt how to work and communicate with other teammates better to achieve higher efficiency in carrying out activities)

Feedback from students that attended the activity I facilitated: “Only through this activity that I had fun with my group, interacted more with them than normal and actually got to know them better”

UNSW GLOBAL EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT AUSTRALIA 2013 (TOP 40% SG)

National Science Challenge 2013

Attending this challenge has further incited my passion on sciences. Seeing numerous interesting experiments has made me a better thinker, to think out of the box and figure out how the experiment works which applies to my daily learning from the state’s educational system by being a better thinker. At the same time, it has widened my exposure to the different educational standards of the state, by looking at how the best of other schools present their ideas and scientific knowledge at a different way.

5TH ASEAN Youth Convention 2013

Coming to this convention has allowed me to better understand how multilateral relationships work and how Singapore manages its diplomatic ties. Being able to communicate and work together with foreign students coming from all countries of ASEAN, has led me to better understand the differences between us and learn to work more efficiently with them despite coming from totally ethnically different backgrounds.

National PET Rocket Competition 2013 International PET Rocket Competition 2013

Going on this competition has better allowed me to understand the dynamics of a rocket in air, the culture of other students from different backgrounds like China, Pakistan and Bangladesh and at the same time, showcase my leadership capabilities. I led a team of 6 students from different school together while collaborating with organizers and teachers to creating the first international PET Rocket t-shirt for Singapore and creating a team which met everyone’s expectation and is friendly to creating conversations with other international students during the event. Specially

invited by Speedb’s CEO Charles to participate as a team leader for International PET Rocket Comp 2014

JA Personal Finance 2013

This event about financial planning has taught me how to manage my cash flow by organizing my spending into tabular format for weekly spending reports and setting aside personal budgets.

YouthMAX: Failing Forward to Success 2013

This event has taught me how failing in our daily life is not scary but instead, the learning that comes with it is what we need to grasp and use to our advantage.

Singapore Geospatial Challenge 2013

This challenge has led me to know about how the Global Positioning System (GPS) works. For example, data collection from satellites to the data we see on our GPS system.

NGEE ANN POLYTECHNIC MATHS CHALLENGE 2014 (TOP Scorer team for Games event)

This challenge has allowed my team and I to apply the mathematical concepts from our past learning into real-life activities which is very interesting as it sparks interest on us to further our learning.

Secondary One Orientation Camp Programme 2014 (Assistant Overall Camp In-Charge)

Taking on this role has definitely taught me many things that I am unable to learn from attending daily classroom teachings. Being the one tasked with handling the overall proposal of the camp, I have learnt how to put together different aspects of the proposal together to write a proposal that is targeted at 300+ people. At the same time, during the camp, I had to manage a team of 60+ people together with my other camp In-Charges. Unexpected changes during the camp has allowed me to learn how to better communicate with my teammates, and manage conflicts within the camp. This camp has led me to learn how to make rational decisions and be a better speaker in front of large crowds.

Singapore 33rd River Regatta

Attending this dragon boat event with my team has made us realized what hard work can bring about. We have worked hard as majority of the boat are juniors and yet managed to clinch 2nd for the Tertiary Opens, showed us that working hard does pay off and in a team, there are many things to watch out for. I definitely learnt how to work better in a team, and to get the team going together.
