DVAR TORAHRosh Chodesh Elul - August 6-7 is the beginning of themonth of Elul. Moshe Rabbeinu went up on this day toreceive the second Luchot (Tablets), which he brought down40 days later, on Yom Kippur. To commemorate this, thereis a custom to blow the Shofar every morning in Shul duringElul, with the exception of Shabbat and Erev Rosh Hashana.Selichot - begin August 31. We recite special penitentaryprayers in the days leading up to Rosh Hashana throughYom Kippur, highlighted by the recitation of the 13Attirbutes, imploring G-d to forgive us in the merit of thecovenant He made with our Forefathers.Rosh Hashana - September 4-6. On Wednesday eveningSeptember 4 we begin the Jewish New Year of 5774. Wethalso begin the period known as the Aseret Yemay Teshuva,Ten Days of Repentance. A most solemn time, RoshHashana commemorates the anniversary of mankindscreation after the creation of the world six days earlier. During the two days of Rosh Hashana, G-d judges the entireworld and inscribes the fate of all life. As Jews, we recitevarious prayers to express our aspirations, and we eat manysymbolic foods in hopes of bringing special blessings. During Rosh Hashanah, we observe the custom of Tashlich,in which we go to living bodies of water and recite prayers, thus symbolically casting off our sins, as well as to seekmerit for the deeds of our forefather Abraham who, according to the Midrash, was forced to cross a sea in orderto fulfill G-ds command to bring his son Isaac to MountMoriah.

A major focus of Rosh Hashana is the blowing of theshofar. One hundred kolot, or notes, blown during variousportions of the service remind us of the Almightyscoronation as King of the Universe, awaken our sleepinghearts from their lethargy to return to the Almighty and helpus recount the story of Abraham sacrificing a ram in place ofhis son. We pray for forgiveness for the previous yearstransgressions and implore the Creator for a year where wewill perform Mitzvot unstintingly, a year of good health, peace and prosperity on the merit of our teshuva -repentance. And Repentance, Prayer and Charity removethe unfavorable judgement. Kesser Maariv Pushkas(Tzedaka Boxes) Are Available. Call the Office to pick one

  • up.We make an Eruv Tavshillin before candle lighting on

September 4, 18 and 25. This allows us to warm up food onYom Tov for Shabbat, which begins immediately after YomTov. A special bracha is made over two rolls or matzot anda cooked food, commonly a piece of fish or chicken. TheBracha, which can be found in the ArtScroll Siddur (p. 654),is Baruch Ata Ad-nai (G-ds Name) El-heinu melechhaolam asher kidishanu bmitzvotav vitzivanu al mitzvateruv. The accompanying Bdin Eruvah declaration shouldalso be recited. This food must be set aside and eaten onShabbat. We do this each Wednesday Sept. 4, 18 and 25.Tzom Gedaliah - Sunday, September 8. The fast day ofTzom Gedaliah is usually on the day after Rosh Hashanaunless, like this year, that day is Shabbos, in which case wefast on Sunday. The fast commemorates the murder ofGedaliah ben Achikam, who was a Jewish leader appointedby our conquerors after the destruction of the First Templein 586 B.C.E. With his assassination by one of hiscountrymen, Jews lost their stake in self-rule even in theDiaspora. The fast begins at 4:58 am and ends at 7:38 pm.Yom Kippur - September 13-14. Yom Kippur is the uniqueday of the year dedicated to forgiveness, mercy andconciliation between G-d and the Jewish people. This yearit begins on Friday evening, September 13, with theceremony of Kol Nidre, a prayer to annul any unfulfilledoaths or vows. Speech is the attribute that distinguishes manfrom the rest of the animal kingdom. Accordingly, we arevery concerned with the punishments that may occur fordeliberate or accidental transgressions concerning ourspeech. The holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur, commemorates G-ds forgiveness of the Israelites, whose sinwas the worship of the golden calf after they received theTen Commandments. It is a day when we are commandedto shed our earthly limitations and aspire to emulate theangels. Accordingly, we abstain from eating, drinking, wearing leather shoes, using lotions, washing and maritalrelations. By observing these prohibitions, we transcend ourphysical existence and are elevated to a higher spiritual state,so we are better able to pray for ourselves, our loved ones, our families and for all of Israel. On Yom Kippur, G-devaluates our actions during the Ten Days of Repentance anddetermines whether our actions were sincere or empty. Onthe merit of repentance, prayer and charity, we are able toavert the severe decree that may have been ordained duringRosh Hashanah.

Sukkot begins Wednesday evening, September 18, andcontinues through September 25. It commemorates the timewhen G-d took the Jewish people out of Egypt and housedthem in the Annanei Hakavod - Clouds of Glory that

protected the Jewish people; therefore we dwell in sukkot, ortemporary huts. The first two days of Sukkot are known asyom tov (holidays) where most melechah (creativeactivity) is prohibited. They are followed by CholHamoed (Intermediate Days), which are hybrid, in that theyhave aspects of both holidays and regular week days.

When eating in the succah, we invite seven Ushpizin orguests, essential leaders of the Jewish people: Abraham,Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Aaron and King David whoeach represents one of the seven spiritual attributes neededto perfect our souls in service of the Creator.

Every day of Sukkot, with the exception of Shabbat, whenthey are not touched, one blessing is recited over the fourspecies - the Etrog, Lulav, Hadasim and Aravot. The firsttime we take them on the holiday, we also reciteShehechiyanu. On the last of the intermediate days, knownas Hoshanah Rabbah, we make seven circuits around theBimah, after which willows are beaten on the floor tosymbolize the end of the high holiday period of judgement.Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah September 25-27 AtSukkots end, Jews immediately celebrate the holidays ofShemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. The Midrash, or Biblecommentary, teaches that on Sukkot we are concerned withall humanity because in the Temple we offered 70 sacrificesduring Sukkot, corresponding to the 70 nations of the world. However, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah is a holidayjust for the Almighty and the Jewish people. The holidaysremind us that material needs and wants are fleetingillusions; the realm of the spirit is the only true andpermanent domain. We recite the Yizkor, or memorialprayer, during Shemini Atzeret to remember those who havegone before us and set out paths for us to follow. OnSimchat Torah, Jews dance and rejoice with their entirebeing as we conclude the reading of the Torah, and then, immediately begin reading the Torah once again. In spite oftremendous adversity, oppression and exile, we have beenpromised that the Torah will always guard and protect us. Even if all else is taken away from the Jewish people, theTorah will always remain.
