During the 2007–2008 academic year, more than 623,000 international students enrolled in U.S. institutions of higher education, according to Open Doors 2008, the annual report published by the Institute of International Education. Why do so many international students choose U.S. colleges and universities? With more than 4,000 colleges and universities, the United States has one of the finest systems of higher education in the world. According to the Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Goli Ameri, “In today’s competitive international environment, the increase in enrollments noted in this year’s Open Doors data demonstrates again that the U.S. remains the premier destination for international students”. U.S. higher education is unparalleled in its vitality, quality, and diversity, resulting in the world leading position in the fields of business, engineering, science, and education.
Institutions in the United States offering post-secondary education are known as a college or university and may offer degrees at the Associate, Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level. Students apply for admission into a college/university, with each institution using varying levels of selectivity and admission standards. U.S. institutions are uniquely diverse. Some of the basic differences can be categorized as; private vs. public, size, type of degrees, cost and location.
University Levels Community or Junior College: Allows students to study for two years prior to further study at a four year college or university Degrees: Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS)Transfer Process: Students may apply to transfer to a four-year college or university. The four year school will accept credits earned at the community college. Some community colleges have transfer agreements with a local four-year institution, where the community college provides the first two years of study and the four year institution provides the remaining years of study.
Undergraduate Study: Satisfies university and class requirements to achieve a bachelor’s degree in a specific course of study (major) Degrees: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.), Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) or Bachelor of Philosophy (B.Phil.) Five-Year Professional Architecture programs offer the Bachelor of Architecture Degree (B.Arch.), Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.).
Admission Considerations:Quality of Courses Students’ Grade Point Average (GPA)Class ranking Standardized test scores (SAT or ACT tests)Other Considerations (commitment to extracurricular activities, a personal essay, and an interview)
Graduate Study: Comprised of one to three years of study after completing a U.S. Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from another country. Several years of work experience may also be required.Degrees: Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MS), Master of Business Administration (MBA), or other less common master’s degrees such as Master of Education (MEd), and Master of Fine Arts (MFA), Master Social Work (MSW), Master of Engineering (ME), Master of Professional Administration (MPA).
Admission Considerations:Area of Study (Major)Students’ Grade Point Average (GPA)Personal StatementLetters of RecommendationProfessional ExperienceStandardized test scores (GMAT, GRE, or MAT)

OVERVIEW OFHIGHER EDUCATIONIN THE UNITED STATES
2 • www.els.edu
Liberal Arts Liberal arts institutions are primarily colleges with an emphasis upon undergraduate study in the liberal arts. Encyclopædia Britannica Concise defines “liberal arts” as a “college or university curriculum aimed at imparting general knowledge and developing general intellectual capacities, in contrast to a professional, vocational, or technical curriculum.” Liberal Arts institutions can be either public or private.
PrivateA private institution generally does not receive funding from the state or national government and thus relies on private sources of funding, such as tuition fees and alumni donations. Since these institutions are privately funded they may be more expensive than a public/state institution.
Public Public institutions receive some of their funding from the state and federal government, although tuition revenue and private funding are also an important part of their financial support. These institutions are also referred to as State Universities. Public/State institutions usually have their own admissions requirements, however, in some states; the whole state system operates under one admission’s criteria. Public/State institutions are generally less expensive that private institutions are categorized as research institutions and thus offer programs through the Doctoral level.
California Lutheran University is ranked 16th on the 2009 U.S. News & World
Report list of top schools in the West offering quality bachelor’s and master’s
degrees.
The “America’s Best Colleges” 2009 edition of U.S. News & World Report has
ranked Saint Joseph’s University among the top 10 master’s universities in
the north.
RANKINGSThere is no official list of the top 10, 20, 50, or even 100 universities in the United States nor does the U.S. government rank universities. Annually, there are many magazines and guidebooks published that contain subjective college “rankings”. These unofficial rankings may categorize colleges/universities by location or by academic area of study (Engineering, Computer Science or Business for example), and they may also divide them into a “regional” or “national” category. In some rankings, academic standards and general reputation are not always the key factors being considered. Check the criteria being used to establish the ranking list and compare it to the student’s personal criteria. Published rankings, although unofficial, can be a good starting point in the college search. The college experience consists of intangible experiences that far exceed numbers alone. Rankings should be a tool that helps students find the school that meets their academic and social needs.

“I am a sophomore at Chabot College. Before I transferred to Chabot, I studied at ELS Hayward for two sessions. After I finished the program, I realized that my English significantly improved. I could communicate with college instructors very well. I will transfer to UC Berkeley in the spring semester.
It is all because I got a good foundation of English through the ELS program.”
- Hoi Ng, China (studied at ELS Hayward)
“…it was really a fantastic choice for me to study here before going to the States. The ELS AEC in Shanghai is just like an American campus, and it gave me the opportunity to adapt to an American style of life.”

Over the past 45 years ELS has helped hundreds of thousands of students meet their study goals in the US, while providing them with a unique American experience. Programs are offered for students who wish to attend a college or university in the US, need English to advance in a career, or simply want to improve their English. With over 50 locations across the US, most on university campuses, ELS gives students the choice of the study environment and program that best meets their needs.
For academically-bound students, ELS offers an Intensive English program, Fast Track Program, Complete Prep Program for the TOEFL® iBT, ELS GRE® Test Prep Program and ELS GMAT® Test Prep Program.
All five programs help students to fully prepare for university study in the USA using a communicative approach to language learning. Students who complete the advanced level of the Intensive English Program or Fast Track Program may apply to any of more than 550 universities, colleges and career schools without needing
the TOEFL®. ELS Test Prep Programs help students get the score they need to succeed. Academic advising is included for students who are considering further study at an American university.
Building on its many years of experience, ELS has developed its own unique curriculum, textbooks and branded language-learning software to help students master English. The ELS Language Technology Centers offer students the opportunity to focus on individual skills that need improvement. ELS’ highly qualified teachers, proven teaching methods and carefully designed curriculum ensure a student’s academic success.
As part of the learning experience, ELS encourages students to explore their new environment. All ELS Centers plan a wide range of activities for students. These include center-organized and campus events, sightseeing trips and visits to local attractions. And through the ELS Contact America! program, students can practice their English with Americans while enjoying a variety of planned activities together.
THE ADVANTAGES ELS LANGUAGES CENTERS OFFERS
“I have plans to complete my bachelors degree in the United States. Before starting the university style life, I thought that I needed to improve my English skills. Therefore I joined ELS Center . All my teachers helped me a lot in my studies to develop my English skills. ELS Center also gives their students many skills that are needed in the University.”
-Fatemah Al-Houti, Kuwait (studied at ELS Ashland)
“I was a student at ELS Portland, and I have just been accepted at Concordia University. I enjoyed studying English at ELS for so many reasons! I had great teachers. The teachers try very hard to help students learn English, and I was able to improve my English so much because of them.”
- Naotaka Sekiguchi, Japan (studied at ELS Portland)
