DR. LEO M. LAMBERTELON UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

Dr. Leo M. Lambert became Elon University’s eighth president on Jan. 1, 1999. His tenure has been marked by the successful completion of a $46.7 million capital campaign, the opening of Belk Library, the construction of Rhodes Stadium and the transition to university status. He has provided leadership for the conception of the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan, which will guide Elon’s efforts to become one of the nation’s premier small, selective, undergraduate universities.

Chair of the executive committee of North Carolina Campus Compact, a coalition of college and university presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education, Lambert also heads the president’s council of Project Pericles, an initiative to promote socially responsible citizenship among college and university students. He has written extensively about post-secondary education and has spearheaded several national projects aimed at improving college and university teaching, including

the Future Professoriate Project, which he founded at Syracuse University. Lambert has been a member of the boards of the Ameri-can Council on Education and the American Association for Higher Education. In 1998, he was honored by Change magazine as one of the nation’s outstanding young leaders in higher education.

Lambert graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York at Geneseo. He earned a master’s degree in education at the University of Vermont in Burlington and a doctorate in education from Syracuse. He and his wife, Laurie, both natives of Scotia, N.Y., have two daughters, Callie and Mollie.

DAVE BLANKDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Dave Blank enters his second year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2007-08

campaign, following a year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. Blank also engineered staff expansion in the Department of Athletics — including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club — and set a plan in motion for future facil-ity improvements.

Under Blank’s direction, 10 of Elon’s 16 teams fashioned better winning percentages and higher Southern Conference finishes last year than in the previous campaign.

Last year also saw the Phoenix forge the school’s best SoCon finishes in football, women’s cross country and women’s tennis, record the program’s first winning men’s soccer season at the Division I level and post SoCon regular season and tournament championships in men’s tennis, claiming 14 consecutive victories before falling to Clemson in NCAA postseason action.

Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006, arriving on the scene just in time to witness the Phoenix capture the SoCon men’s basketball North Division crown, a SoCon men’s tennis regular season co-championship and the outright SoCon baseball regular season title. Prior to coming to Elon, Blank spent six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University.

At Drake, Blank directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program and a new Life Skills program for student-athletes, encouraging participation in community activities and career development. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above.

Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority during his tenure at Drake, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Sta-dium, which hosts football, soccer, track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays.

He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations.

Blank served as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director acco-lades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005.

Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003.

Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996.

Blank began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina for three seasons (1982-85). He then served Wofford College for a year (1985-86) as Assistant Director of Athletics and assistant basketball coach before working a two-season stint (1986-88) as an assistant basketball coach at Lock Haven.

A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986.

Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children — Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

Jackie Sgambati is going into her eighth as head coach of the Elon University women’s cross country team, her fourth season at the helm of the Phoenix men’s cross country squad in 2007 and her eighth season of training the distance runners on the track and field team, a program she started in 2000.

Jackie SgambatiHead Cross Country Coach8th Season

Sgambati led the women’s squad to a fourth-place finish out of the 11 teams in the Southern Conference during the 2006 campaign. For the second year in a row, an Elon runner earned Fresh-man of the Year accolades as Caitlin Beeler placed ninth at the league meet with a time of 17:59.47, setting a school record. Beeler became just the second Elon cross country runner to earn all-confer-ence honors at the Division I level and the first Phoenix women’s cross country runner to break

18:00.0. The men’s team again finished seventh in the league.

In 2005, Sgambati’s women’s team placed fifth in the Southern Conference as Alana Black ran to an eighth-place finish at the league championship, earning all-conference ac-colades while setting a then-school record with a time of 18:40.18. Sgambati also guided Anna Mae Flynn to Southern Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 2005. Flynn placed 11th at the league meet with a time of 18:45.87. John Tumbleston, a two-time Academic All-American, also tied the school record on the men’s side in 2005 with a time of 25:47.13. The men’s team placed seventh at the conference championship.

Sgambati’s teams continue to set high standards as the women recorded all of the pro-gram’s top-10 times during the 2005 and 2006 seasons while the men posted eight of the top-10 during the last two campaigns.

Sgambati’s 2001, 2002 and 2004 squads were all honored as United States Cross Coun-try Coaches Association All-Academic Teams, and the women’s teams recieved the accolade again in 2005 and 2006. Following the 2006 campaign, Eric Garren (first team) and Katelyn Ealer (second team) both earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District.

An avid marathon runner herself, Sgambati served as former coach Bill Morningstar’s assistant for the Elon cross country teams before taking over as head coach. She was also a marathon coach for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for three years.

A native of Mechanicville, N.Y., Sgambati is no stranger to Elon athletics. The 1998 Elon graduate earned a bachelor of science degree in sports medicine with a concentration in exercise science while earning four varsity letters in cross country.

Sgambati earned her master’s in nutrition from East Carolina in 2006. She married Joe Winslow in July.

Mark EllistonHead Track & Field Coach2nd SeasonUniversity.

The third head coach in the history of the Phoenix women’s indoor and outdoor track and field programs, Elliston will lead Elon into its eighth campaign overall this year and fifth in the Southern Conference. Out of the 11 league institutions, the Phoenix finished sixth indoors and sixth outdoors in the 2007 Southern Conference championships.

In his first season at Elon, Ellison coached two SoCon individual champions - Jessica Clendenning (indoor and outdoor pole vault) and Dominique Price (indoor 60 meter hurdles) - and led the indoor and outdoor squads to 18 new school re-cords.

Altogether at Lock Haven, Elliston coached seven Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship teams and 30 NCAA-II All-Americans, including three national champions. He also served the Eagles as their head coach in men’s and wom-en’s cross country for 11 years, guiding a pair of athletes to All-America status.

Elliston’s squads have received academic team awards from the United States Track Coaches Association on seven occasions and from the United States Cross Country Coaches Association five times. The USTCA honored 18 Lock Haven athletes with in-dividual academic accolades while the USCCCA recognized 13 Eagles during Elliston’s tenure.

No stranger to honors himself, Elliston was named the PSAC and NCAA-II East Re-gional Coach of the Year in both women’s indoor track and men’s outdoor track and field in 2003. He was also dubbed the 1999 PSAC and NCAA-II East Regional Men’s Coach of the Year.

Matt Roden is in his second season as the assistant track and field coach at Elon University and will focus primarily on the throwers. Roden came to Elon from Conway, S.C. where he assist-ed the strength and conditioning coach and the throws coach at Coastal Carolina University.

Matt RodenAssistant Track & Field Coach2nd Season

Roden spent four years as an assistant coach and clinic coordinator for the Mjolnir Track and Field Club in Conway. He planned and coordinated activities for the Annual Throws Clinic. Roden also directed sessions on weightlifting and nutritional supplementation as well as hammer and discus throw techniques.

The Southern Conference

The Southern Conference, which began its 87th season of intercollegiate competition in 2007, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination.

The Southern Conference has also excelled as the pre-mier Football Championship Subdivision conference. South-ern Conference member Appalachian State has captured the last two Football Championship Subdivision titles. The Conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Di-vision I Championships.

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine Academ-ic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from SoCon institu-tions.

The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in

operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was ren-ovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meet-ing area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

25th Anniversary of Women’s Championships

The Southern Conference will celebrate 25 years of women’s championships in 2007-08. A year-long celebration of women’s sports will highlight student-athletes, coaches and teams. Commissioner Ken Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s ath-letics. The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s ath-letics programs in the conference. From its humble begin-nings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success. The league crowns champions in nine women’s sports including cross country, soccer, volleyball, indoor track & field, basketball, tennis, golf, outdoor track & field and softball.

The 2005 UNC Wilmington graduate competed on the track and field team that captured the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association championship. A four-time All-CAA honoree, Roden earned the

conference title in the hammer in 2005. He was twice named CAA Athlete of the Week in 2005 and earned UNC Wilmington team field MVP honors. He set UNC Wilmington records in the hammer throw while outperforming the closest conference competition by 15 feet. Roden received NCAA All-East honors with his performance at the 2005 IC4A Track and Field Cham-pionship.

Roden spent his first two collegiate seasons at Coastal Carolina and took the 2002 Big South Conference hammer throw title.

Roden has his USATF Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching Certification in the throws events. He is also a USATF Associate Level Official and is a member of the National Throws Coaches Association.
