THE OPPORTUNITY
Elon University seeks nominations for and expressions of interest in the position of
Dean of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business.
Elon University has built a national reputation for engaged learning. Newsweek
magazine recently named Elon the nation’s hottest college for engaged learning, and
U.S. News & World Report ranks Elon #2 among 119 Southern master’s-level universities.
Elon is the nation’s top master’s university in the percentage of students who study
abroad and was named one of the nation’s top three universities for service in the
inaugural President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
Approximately 5,000 undergraduates and 600 graduate students work closely with
more than 300 full-time faculty. Students come from 46 states, the District of Columbia,
and 45 other nations; about 25 percent are from North Carolina. The academic program
is distinguished by a strong foundation in Elon College, the College of Arts and
Sciences, combined with outstanding programs in the School of Business, School of
Communications, School of Education, School of Law and School of Health Sciences.
Elon was founded in 1889 and has an historical affiliation with the United Church of
Christ. The University is situated midway between North Carolina’s Triad and the
Research Triangle. The 600-acre campus is designated as a botanical garden and has
been cited as one of the nation’s most beautiful.
Elon University has experienced remarkable growth and success over the past decade,
attracting more and more talented students from a wider geographic area, hiring many
new and strong faculty, building numerous new facilities, launching a law school,
transitioning to NCAA Division I athletics, and gaining wide recognition for its strong
strategic planning and innovative leadership. Continuing this momentum, the
University is expected to complete a $100 million capital campaign by December 2011.
At the same time, Elon’s core values have remained constant through decades of
growth: close relationships between faculty and students, a culture that supports
constant innovation, and a strong sense of community. Elon has been recognized in
The Chronicle’s ‚Great Colleges to Work For‛ survey as one of the best places to work,
singled out in ten separate categories including ‚Teaching Environment,‛ ‚Job

3
Satisfaction,‛ ‚Healthy Faculty-Administration Relations,‛ and ‚Confidence in Senior
Leadership.‛
The successful transformation of Elon University from an institution that nearly closed
its doors during the Great Depression to the thriving multi-faceted University it is
today would not have been possible without countless individuals from faculty to
trustees to its legacy of visionary presidential leaders. Dr. Leo M. Lambert became
Elon’s eighth President in January 1999 and has helped the University establish a
reputation for academic excellence and a strong financial and enrollment position.
During his tenure, the University has completed two strategic plans; constructed
Rhodes Stadium and the Koury Business Center, expanded residential and dining
facilities, opened Belk Library, and constructed a six-building Academic Village that
serves as the center for Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences.
Today, Elon seeks to secure recognition among the nation’s best selective, private
universities. Substantial progress has been achieved toward realizing this goal. The
academic climate of the campus has been enhanced through a strong commitment to
ongoing internal discussion and reflection, as well as the establishment of increasing
numbers of endowed merit-based and need-based scholarships.
Since 2000, the University has more than doubled expenditures for library acquisitions,
increased faculty sabbatical opportunities, added a foreign language requirement, and
improved Elon’s position in NCAA Division I athletics by joining the Southern
Conference. Elon’s renowned program of experiential learning has been strengthened
through the University’s participation in Campus Compact and Project Pericles, which
encourage students to become civically engaged in their communities. The University
now hosts a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa; the School of Business attained AACSB
International accreditation, the School of Communications achieved accreditation by
ACEJMC, and the School of Law opened in Greensboro in 2006 and has since achieved
ABA accreditation. Elon University's board of trustees voted April 15, 2011, to establish
a new School of Health Sciences, serving graduate students in the existing doctor of
physical therapy (DPT) program along with students in the new physician assistant
(PA) studies master's program, which will enroll its first class in January 2013.
More information about Elon University may be found in Appendix I as well as at its
web-site: www.elon.edu.

In 2009 the University unveiled its new strategic plan, The Elon Commitment, which
seeks to secure Elon’s place ‚…among colleges and universities known for academic
excellence and exceptional student achievement.‛ The plan provides direction and
focus for decisions through 2020 and is organized around eight themes:
An unprecedented university commitment to diversity and global engagement
Supporting a world-class faculty and staff
Attaining the highest levels of achievement across academic programs
Launching strategic and innovative pathways in undergraduate and graduate
education
Stewarding Elon’s commitment to remain a best-value university
Developing innovative alumni programs to advance and support the Elon
graduate
Establishing a national tournament tradition of athletics success along with the
highest academic standards for Phoenix athletics
Significantly enhancing Elon’s campus with premier new academic and
residential facilities and a commitment to protecting the environment
The plan’s success depends on broad participation, collaborative and swift execution of
aggressive goals, shared responsibility for outcomes, and the collective creativity of the
entire University community. As an exemplar of integrated teaching and learning,
Elon continues to lead the nation in exploring and delivering new and exciting models
of education designed to prepare leaders for the challenges of dynamic, global society.
The Love School of Business will play a crucial role in success of The Elon Commitment
and the University overall.
MARTHA AND SPENCER LOVE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2011.
Home to 23 percent of Elon’s declared majors, the school offers undergraduate majors
in accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, international business,
international economics, management, and marketing, as well as MBA and Executive
Education programs. Faculty members in the business school have worked as
accountants, economists, corporate leaders and entrepreneurs.

The school is housed in the Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, a 60,000 square foot
facility featuring high-tech resources such as the Reed Finance Center that provides
real-time data from global financial markets. Also located in the Koury Business Center
is the Doherty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, the Chandler Family Professional
Sales Center, the William Garrard Reed Finance Center, and the Porter Family
Professional Development Center. In 2004, the Martha and Spencer Love School of
Business received initial accreditation from AACSB International, the Association to
Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and is in its second full cycle of reaccreditation.
The Love School of Business was named in 2011 among the nation’s best by
Businessweek, which ranked the school 26th for academic quality, 19th for its
entrepreneurship program, and 60th overall. In 2009, the part-time MBA program was
ranked by Businessweek as # 6 in the nation and #1 in the South. Members of its faculty
are increasingly recognized nationally and internationally for their teaching,
scholarship, and service, its alumni occupy leadership positions in major companies
around the globe, and its students are engaged in an exciting, dynamic learning
experience that includes unique international experiences.
The mission of Elon University stresses its commitment to the traditional goals of liberal
arts colleges and universities. While the liberal arts are the foundation of an Elon
education, the University has a rich tradition of preparing young men and women for
the professions of business, communications, education and social work. This tradition
signals recognition that the world will always need responsible, moral and professional
leaders. Elon graduates are ready to play their part in that global society. In particular,
the Love School of Business seeks to teach and prepare those who will lead – and
practice – business and economic life in the 21st century, both at home and abroad.

LOVE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) – The B.S.B.A. degree
program emphasizes business knowledge acquisition, skill development through
hands-on learning and experiential activities, and the development of discipline,
integrity and an ethic of service. The B.S.B.A. degree program offers five majors in
Entrepreneurship, Finance, International Business, Management and Marketing and
includes a common core representing the functional business disciplines (e.g.,
accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, CIS, etc.). Students in the
B.S.B.A. program are required to complete an internship.
Bachelor of Science in Accounting – The B.S. in Accounting includes the central topics
of financial and managerial accounting plus an introduction to taxation, auditing and
commercial law. The Accounting degree prepares the graduate to be a professional
accountant in business and in government, nonprofit and other organizations. This
degree can also serve as a basis for graduate study in accounting and other fields,
including business administration and law. Students wishing to obtain certification as a
CPA and practice in the field of public accounting must have 150 hours of college credit
that includes at least 30 semester hours of accounting. Through careful advising and
planning, it is possible to complete the 150-hour requirement by the time the student
completes the degree. All students majoring in Accounting are required to complete an
internship.
Bachelor of Arts in Economics – Students in Economics learn how to identify and
quantify costs and benefits to improve decision-making, examine market interactions,
and forecast indicators such as inflation and employment rates. Upper-level courses
focus on international trade, public finance and the history of economic thought. A
capstone course in the senior year requires the completion of an original research
project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. For fall 2011, the economics department
will offer a new major in International Economics. The new major will extend Elon’s
global reach by preparing students for careers in international policy making and
research organizations. Students majoring in international economics are required to
have a conversational level of fluency in a foreign language, to study abroad for a
semester, and take a course in a foreign language.

Master of Business Administration – Success in the Elon M.B.A. program is built on
four parts. First, students gain a global perspective. Elon M.B.A. students don’t just
talk about the international marketplace, they engage with it. Twice yearly travel
opportunities take students to Asia, South America, and Europe to see first-hand how
U.S. companies compete in global markets. Second, students explore and learn through
experience what Ethical Leadership means and how to apply it in their professional
lives. Third, the Integrated M.B.A. Curriculum uses a mix of case analysis, team work,
and consulting projects to give students opportunities to apply what they are learning
in real-firm settings. Finally, when students enroll in the Elon M.B.A. program, they
join a Community of faculty, staff and classmates who become colleagues. An active
student and alumni association ushers students into social outings and service projects
that serve students and their communities.
Business Dual Degree Program – Offered by the Martha and Spencer Love School of
Business and the European School of Business at Reutlingen University in Germany, the
business dual-degree program provides an unusual opportunity for extended study
and work in two cultures while exposing students to international business, giving
them a competitive edge in the global marketplace. Students participating in the
program will be fluent in English and German and will learn how to be successful in a
foreign business environment while gaining the knowledge, skills and abilities
mastered by traditional business students. Elon students participating in the dual
degree program will spend their first two years on campus and their last two years in
Germany, including a semester-long, full-time internship. They will complete all the
graduation requirements for both Elon and ESB-Reutlingen and be awarded a B.S.B.A.
in International Business from Elon and a B.Sc. in International Management from ESB.
STUDENTS
The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has a talented, growing, and engaged
student population of approximately 1,150 undergraduate and 145 graduate students.
The average SAT score for incoming first-year Elon students in 2010 was 1829 (1218 for

teaching ethical values, the Love School of Business has adopted the Principles for
Responsible Management Education. The PRME provides a framework for business
schools and universities worldwide to adapt teaching and research methodologies to
the new challenges and opportunities facing business in the 21st century. As a
signatory school, Elon joins an international group of institutions in the commitment to
encourage social responsibility in the creation of a sustainable global economy. The
university's partnership with PRME is included in the Love School of Business' strategic
plan, and Elon and the Love School of Business report annually to PRME on its efforts.

industries and geographic locations. Board members serve four-year terms and meet
on campus three times a year. The LSB board provides valuable input into educational
programs designed to prepare students for the challenges of contemporary business.
Equally important are the board’s efforts to promote the LSB to many external
constituencies for purposes of student hiring, fund raising and recruitment of the best
faculty and students.

The Accounting Advisory Board has 16 members and meets three times a year. It was
formed 10 years ago to provide input to the direction and development of the
accounting program and its students. The board consists of professional accountants in
public and private accounting businesses as well as governmental and not-for-profit
organizations. The board has been instrumental in the development of the program
and its support of the annual Meet and Greet recruiting program and for its input to
critical changes in the curriculum and degree program in accounting.
THE ROLE OF THE DEAN
The Dean of the Love School of Business reports to the Provost/Vice President for
Academic Affairs and serves as a member of both the Provost’s Council and the
Academic Affairs Council. Also reporting to the Provost are the Deans of the other
schools and Elon College; the Dean of International Programs, two Associate Provosts,
an Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, an Assistant Vice President who
directs the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, the Vice President
for Student Life, the Registrar, and, beginning in fall 2011, the Executive Director of
Corporate and Employer Relations.
Reporting to the Dean are two Associate Deans, a Director of Undergraduate Programs,
an Internship Coordinator, an Administrative Assistant and two Program Assistants.
Partnering with the School’s faculty, the Dean will be called upon to deepen the quality
of the educational program, to continue to define and support academic excellence, to
assume the primary advocacy role for the School’s faculty, students, and programs, and
to be a leading voice for experiential business education and the liberal arts within and
outside both the School and University. The Dean identifies priorities for financial
support and works closely with the business liaison in University Advancement to
pursue funding for those priorities.
The Dean is the academic leader of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business
and is responsible for the direction of programs within the School. Attuned to the
institutional and societal contexts affecting current and potential programs within the
School, the Dean coordinates and facilitates the efforts of department chairs, program
directors, and faculty to respond creatively to these contexts. The Dean ensures the
development and achievement of goals through allocation and management of
Elon University Dean, Love School of Business
13
resources, through appropriate initiatives for external funding, and through evaluation
of the quality of personnel, programs and related services.
The Dean oversees the use of budgeted funds – $6.1M in 2010-2011, of which $447,143
is dedicated to operating funds – to ensure appropriate staffing within the School and to
recommend areas within the School that require additional staffing. The Dean ensures
course offerings meet departmental needs and makes recommendations concerning
departmental and program initiatives and respective budgetary priorities.
The Dean ensures that department and program planning is consistent with the mission
of the University and the School, and evaluates the assessment efforts of departments
and programs both for accreditation purposes and to ensure that results yield
meaningful information that is used in ongoing planning. The Dean works closely with
chairs, program directors, and faculty in implementing program improvements. The
Dean is responsible for the summative, administrative evaluation of the School’s faculty
and makes recommendations to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs in
matters of salary, promotion, continuance, and tenure. The Dean appoints program
directors and consults with departments on appointments of department chairs. The
Dean also assures appropriate faculty development activity throughout the School and
is ultimately responsible for the successful reaffirmation of AACSB accreditation; the
next review visit is scheduled for spring 2014 and will be based on data reported for the
2012-13 academic year. The Dean may represent the School to prospective students,
families, and external communities and is responsible for both problem-solving and
inspiring, encouraging, and advising departments and their faculty.
OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPECTATIONS FOR LEADERSHIP
VISION FOR THE LOVE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
Fundamentally, as the school of business for one of the most innovative and dynamic
institutions of higher education in the world, LSB is in an excellent position to examine
and define what innovative business education means and how it ought to be
structured to successfully meet emerging and future needs of the global business
community. Long a model of integrated, experiential education grounded in the liberal
arts, Elon has the resources, appetite and culture to establish itself as a leader in
innovative undergraduate and graduate business education. The School seeks an
entrepreneurial, action-oriented dean who embodies and models Elon’s leadership role
Elon University Dean, Love School of Business
14
in higher education and who can work with LSB faculty and the University community
to define and execute a vision for business education that meets and exceeds Elon’s
standards of excellence, innovation and esprit d’corps.
Elon University’s success can be attributed to a stable team of strong leaders working
within a collaborative, entrepreneurial culture in which new ideas are welcomed and
frequently realized. Change is a constant, grounded in the University’s core
commitments to excellence, student success through engaged learning, the teacher-
scholar model, wise use of resources and rigorous, flexible planning. Following the
successful implementation of two consecutive ten-year strategic plans, the University is
well on its way to implementing The Elon Commitment. The component objectives for
the Love School of Business were fleshed out and articulated in a supporting strategic
plan whose execution is also well under way. The Dean’s immediate agenda will be
guided in part by the LSB plan’s strategic priorities:
Deliver an exceptional learning experience that prepares participants for success
in a complex business environment
Enhance the culture of intellectual curiosity, focusing on creating and extending
knowledge and improving management practice and organizational
performance
Strengthen the culture of diversity and ethical, moral, sustainable, and socially
responsible decision-making
Broaden and deepen global awareness, emphasizing the responsibilities of
individuals and corporations in their roles as world citizens
Develop the LSB brand as a leader in transformative education focused on
creating local and global business professionals and leaders
Build a sustainable resource base and infrastructure for LSB programs and
activities
INTELLECTUAL CLIMATE AND ACADEMIC QUALITY
Elon has grown in the space of two decades from a small, largely undergraduate,
regional college to a nationally recognized master’s comprehensive university. Its
programs have diversified and expanded to embrace the connection between liberal
Elon University Dean, Love School of Business
15
arts and the professions, new interdisciplinary realms, international education and
innovative graduate education. Its graduates are gaining recognition for their academic
preparation with prestigious awards and acceptance into strong graduate programs.
LSB programs have gained national recognition for their quality. The School of
Business has the opportunity to further deepen and strengthen academic quality while
exploring deeper connections among all of Elon’s disciplines.
Elon faculty members are committed to teaching and pride themselves on doing more
than simply lecturing; they are creative and effective teachers who engage students
with a broad range of pedagogical strategies. An Academic Summit held in 2006
confirmed that students and faculty alike support Elon’s efforts to enhance learning
through increased academic challenge. The Center for the Advancement of Teaching
and Learning serves as a resource to promote greater understanding of the student
learning process, to support the implementation of teaching innovations and best
practices, and to foster the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Guided by the teacher-scholar philosophy, the University has committed itself to
enhancing the quality of engaged inquiry by supporting and providing incentives for
increased scholarship activity and exploring the ideal balance among teaching,
scholarship and service. The Dean will play a prominent role in facilitating faculty
scholarship and professional activity while maintaining Elon’s commitment to being a
student- and learning-centered institution. The strategic plan coupled with the pending
reaffirmation process for AACSB accreditation in 2013 will offer the Dean and the
School an excellent opportunity to identify areas for strategic new faculty hires,
program development, and other investments that will continue to strengthen the
School.
Elon University Dean, Love School of Business
16
SHARED GOVERNANCE AND ADMINISTRATION
Elon University operates under a strong centralized planning and decision-making
model informed by a collegial, consultative culture. Faculty are engaged in strategic
University decisions through both formal and informal structures that balance shared
governance with the University’s habit of flexible, swift planning and flawless
execution. Within the broad context of the University, the Dean assumes the role of the
Love School’s primary advocate, while also considering and working for the good of
the University as a whole. Within the context of the School, the Dean will want to
examine the roles of chairs and associate deans, their responsibilities and reward
system, and how they can be even more strategically utilized in planning, budgeting,
and program development in a fast-paced environment.
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
As a national model of engaged and experiential learning, Elon exemplifies the concept
of a student-centered University. Faculty and staff understand that learning takes place
both in and outside the classroom, on and off the campus, and they have long
supported students' direct involvement in learning. The percentage of Elon students
who take part in co-curricular programs is twice that of the national average, and
retention from freshman to sophomore year is above 90 percent. The Division of
Student Life works in partnership with deans, faculty and other staff of the University
to provide a seamless, academically rigorous learning experience that fulfills Elon’s
"vision of an academic community that transforms mind, body, and spirit."
Student engagement comes in part through the Elon Experiences, a signature program
that emphasizes five components that connect students’ educational experiences to real-
world outcomes: study abroad, internships, service learning, leadership, and
undergraduate research. Elon faculty members mentor an impressive number of
students in the University’s Undergraduate Research Program, which aspires to
national prominence.
The University expects its new Dean to embrace the concepts of engaged and
experiential learning and to facilitate the continued close collaboration between
academic affairs and student life. Elon’s national recognition for engaged learning is
borne out by the high rate at which students participate in service (91 percent) and
Elon University Dean, Love School of Business
17
service-learning (58 percent), and the breadth of its leadership development programs.
The academic and co-curricular aspects of the student experience are well integrated at
Elon, and student success is considered a collective responsibility. The new Dean will
be challenged to strengthen Elon’s engaged, active learning while at the same time
ensuring a rigorous and challenging academic environment.
RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND OUTREACH
The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has made swift progress since its
founding, gaining both accreditation and recognition for its top quality programs with
nationally competitive rankings by major media. The School benefits from an
endowment of approximately $7M, and its faculty are increasingly recognized for their
contributions to the field and by a growing number of competitive grants. The Dean
should continue to encourage and inspire faculty to pursue opportunities that will
enhance the student learning experience, create additional learning opportunities and
augment institutional resources.
While its current campaign will be successful, the University’s endowment per student
lies below its peer and aspirant schools. The University has achieved its extraordinary
success by managing its resources strategically and striking a conservative balance
between tuition revenue and tuition discount. The more than 31,500 Elon alumni are
unusually young, with 59 percent in their 20’s and 30’s. While the University enjoys
strong demand from prospective students, it is acutely aware that its dependence on
tuition revenue and the low endowment per student ratio affects its ability to support
student diversity and invest in new initiatives. The Dean will be expected to support,
assist in planning, and participate in the University’s resource development efforts.
Finally, the Love School of Business seeks a Dean who will advance and leverage the
connection between the School and the regional, national and international business
communities. The LSB Board of Advisors, other LSB volunteer groups, alumni, and
parents represent untapped potential for strategic engagement and partnership in
advancing the LSB brand.
PREFERRED QUALITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS
The Dean will be expected to demonstrate and apply a collaborative leadership and
management style that supports shared governance and collegial problem-solving
Elon University Dean, Love School of Business
18
which also reflects the values and attributes of Elon and the LSB and that are open and
demonstrate sound, ethical and deliberative decision making while recognizing and
appreciating Elon’s past, recent changes, with a desire to preserve its mission and
community.
Further, the Dean must have a gift for listening and the willingness to engage in
conversations, formally and informally, with faculty, staff, students, donors and
members of the Elon community and have a commitment to the integration of student
and academic life to further a total campus learning environment.

APPENDIX A: ELON UNIVERSITY, AN OVERVIEW
MISSION STATEMENT Elon University embraces its founders' vision of an academic community that transforms mind, body, and spirit and encourages freedom of thought and liberty of conscience. To fulfill this vision, Elon University acts upon these commitments:
a. We nurture a rich intellectual community characterized by active student engagement with a faculty dedicated to excellent teaching and scholarly accomplishment.
b. We provide a dynamic and challenging undergraduate curriculum grounded in the traditional liberal arts and sciences and complemented by distinctive professional and graduate programs.
c. We integrate learning across the disciplines and put knowledge into practice, thus preparing students to be global citizens and informed leaders motivated by concern for the common good.
d. We foster respect for human differences, passion for a life of learning, personal integrity, and an ethic of work and service.
Elon University is a dynamic private selective University known for excellent Arts and
Sciences along with outstanding professional programs. Elon’s 310 full-time faculty
teach in 50 undergraduate majors. The University offers five graduate degrees: an
MBA in the School of Business, M.Ed. in the School of Education, doctorate of physical
therapy in the School of Education, J.D. in the School of Law, and an M.A. in Interactive
Media in the School of Communications.
Elon operates on a 4-1-4 academic calendar that features a three-week term in January.
Elon’s core values of civility and community can be seen in certain rituals. Each
Tuesday morning, students, faculty, and staff gather on the Academic Village Plaza,
located on the quad that is home to the Elon College Dean’s Office, for refreshments
and fellowship during ‚College Coffee.‛ Optional weekly chapel services in historic
Whitley Auditorium provide an interfaith worship experience. Daily events,
spontaneous gatherings, and sidewalk conversations are the hallmarks of this friendly
and welcoming academic community.

SCHOOLS AND PROGRAMS
Elon has a strong General Studies program to ensure
that all University students complete at least 58 credit
hours in the liberal Arts and Sciences. The General
Studies requirement consists of four core courses taken
by all first-year students (College Writing, General
Statistics, The Global Experience, Contemporary
Wellness); eight course selections in the Arts and
Sciences in the broad categories of Expression,
Civilization, Society and Science/Analysis; a foreign
language proficiency; an experiential learning
requirement; and three upper-level courses outside the
major including an interdisciplinary seminar.
In addition to the Love School of Business, Elon is home to the following schools and
colleges:
Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences, is home to 51 percent of Elon’s students.
The College consists of 19 departments and 43 majors including anthropology, art, art
history, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer information systems, computer
science, dance, English, environmental studies, exercise science, French, history, human
services, international studies, mathematics, music, music performance, music
technology, music theatre, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, public
administration, religious studies, sociology, Spanish, theatre arts, and theatrical design
and production. Most of these fields also offer minors, and additional minors are
available in African/African-American studies, American studies, Asian studies,
classical studies, creative writing, criminal justice, geography, German studies, Italian
studies, jazz studies, Latin American studies, leadership studies, literature, multimedia
authoring, non-violence studies, professional writing, statistics, and women’s/gender

cooperative energy among Arts and Sciences faculty, many of whom also teach
interdisciplinary courses for the General Studies curriculum. Elon’s strong programs in
Arts and Sciences are the foundation for Elon’s successful bid to shelter a chapter of Phi
Beta Kappa.

The School of Communications is home to 20 percent of Elon’s declared majors. The
school offers majors in journalism, strategic communications, media arts and
entertainment (broadcast and cinema), communication science, and sport and event
management. Graduates have won Emmys, Pulitzers and Oscars. The school’s home is
the McEwen Communications Building, equipped with television studios, a
professional video-editing complex, and five digital media labs. Faculty members are
rich in professional experience, including a Pulitzer Prize winner, a CNN veteran, and
top corporate communicators. The school is home to the Imagining the Internet Center
(in partnership with the Pew Internet & American Life Project) and the Sunshine Center
for Open Government in North Carolina. The school’s distinguished advisory board is
led by NBC News anchor Brian Williams, an Elon parent.
The School of Education is home to 6 percent of Elon’s declared majors. The school
focuses on the development of leaders in the profession of teaching. The school has a
student-oriented philosophy, with early and continuous field experiences to gain
practical experience. The education school is the administrative unit for undergraduate
programs in teacher education, plus a master's degree in education (elementary
education, special education, and gifted education).
The School of Law was created in downtown Greensboro in 2006 through a community
commitment to support a school of the highest quality and provide the finest facilities.
The law school achieved full ABA accreditation in 2011. The school’s distinguished
advisory board, led by former presidential adviser David Gergen, includes two former
North Carolina governors, three former North Carolina Supreme Court chief justices, a
former president of the American Bar Association, a former U.S. ambassador, and
numerous other business and legal leaders. Elon Law is the home of the North Carolina
Business Court, one of only a handful of law schools in the nation to house a working
court. The school enrolls more than 300 students and is located in an 84,000-square-foot
building with a multimillion-dollar library collection, wireless technology, courtroom,
and specialized labs and classrooms. Elon’s excellence in engaged learning extends to
the School of Law, which includes a unique ‚preceptor program‛ that connects
practicing lawyers in the Greensboro area to law students as mentors.
The Division of Student Life fosters student learning in the domains of intellectual,
social, physical, emotional, and spiritual development. The Vice President for Student
Life reports to the Provost. Student Life is best known nationally for its commitment

universities for excellence in service-learning, first-year experience, and residential
learning-community programs. The Education Trust ranked Elon seventh in the nation

universities committed to make socially responsible and participatory citizenship an
essential part of its educational program - in the classroom, on the campus, and in the
community. Elon is also the host campus for the North Carolina Campus Compact.
Elon’s six prestigious Fellows programs offer a learning experience for students who
want to challenge themselves in new ways and are utilized by many students to
prepare for the rigor and independence of graduate school. The University-wide
Honors Fellows program sets the bar high, drawing an incoming class with a combined
SAT average above 2100 and a high school GPA of 4.9. Each college/school also offers
and administers its own fellows program, including the Business Fellows, Elon College
Fellows, Communications Fellows, and Teaching Fellows. In addition, the University
offers a Leadership Fellows program that draws students from across the campus.
The Elon Academy, an academic enrichment program created by the University for
students in the Alamance-Burlington School System, targets academically talented high
school students with financial need or no family history of college attendance.

of the nation’s most beautiful by The
Princeton Review, and is designated as a
botanical garden. Many of the buildings
have been completed in the past decade,
complementing the stately Georgian
buildings of the historical campus. Recent
additions to the campus include the Ernest
A. Koury Sr. Business Center, Dalton L.
McMichael Sr. Science Center, Carol Grotnes
Belk Library, the Academic Village – a
complex of six buildings supporting the Arts
and Sciences, Rhodes Stadium, Belk Track and White Field, and The Oaks and
Colonnades resident hall complexes. The University has a sustainability office and one
new LEED certified building, and its campus master plan includes future LEED-
certified buildings.
