10 The Elomatic Catalogue

Green thinking and environmental aspects have become natural considerations in engi-neering like any other design parameter. In-creasingly stringent and complex environ-mental legislation requires consultants with special expertise. At Elomatic we have inte-grated environmental thinking into our core competences. This holds true regardless of the industrial area or product and service offering.

We do not view the environment as a separate activity or business, but something that is to be considered in all designs from small components to large units such as ships and paper machines. Our goal is to identify and implement sustainable and efficient technologies that provide our customers with added value through-out the life cycles of their technical investments.

Environmental know-how

Through our extensive experience in various engineer-ing segments we have gained wide-ranging environ-mental knowledge and competence:

■ Full scope of environmental consultancy and de-sign services for maritime activities

■ Energy consultation and engineering including biofuels and energy efficiency

■ Water technology consultation and engineering ■ Emissions and exhaust gas cleaning consultation

and engineering ■ Selected products such as environmentally

Comprehensive range of services

Keeping abreast of technology developments

Technology develops rapidly and technologies that to-day are in their infancies will be the solutions of tomor-row. Through innovative thinking, continuous monitor-ing of technology developments and by implementing emerging technologies into visionary projects we want to be part of the engineering of a greener future and contribute to enhancing the sustainability of our cus-tomers’ products and services.

We started by reducing our own footprint

In order to be able to bring added value to our cus-tomers we realised that we needed to start by looking at ourselves first. We have evaluated our own carbon footprint in order to improve our environmental per-formance. We bring this level of commitment to every customer project regardless of its size or direct envi-ronmental impact.

16 The Elomatic Catalogue

Elomatic provides a wide range of design, consulting and other services for manufac-turers of machinery and equipment. We are involved in our customers’ R&D projects, in product design and in production develop-ment.

Our design services are often aimed at our customers’ demanding investment projects with co-operation that has evolved over a long period of time. This has enabled us to develop our operations very efficiently in rela-tion to product expertise, personal skills, op-erating processes and tools.

Creativity and innovation in R&D

In our customers’ R&D projects the nature of the work is very innovative, creative and customer-centred. Prod-uct expertise is important, but special skills in different fields such as structural analyses, flow calculations, ma-terial know-how and production technology all play key roles.

We are involved all the way from concept design and idea generation to the detailed planning of R&D pro-jects and, if necessary, we seek suitable manufacturing subcontractors for products. Our services extend to surveys of end-users and usability analyses to ensure the success of a new product in the marketplace.

Comprehensive range of services

Getting the most out of production systems

Our production analysis service covers production planning and production-centred R&D of either new or existing products. We use different simulation mod-els to identify the best solutions for our customers in order to boost the competitiveness of their products.

We have experts in such fields as production flows and masters of robotics. Our specialists are constantly seek-ing new ideas and learning about different technolo-gies to keep our expertise at the highest level for the benefit of our customers.

Optimizing production technologies and product design

Our industrial designers get involved in projects at the earliest design phases. They seek optimal solutions with regards production technology in order to ensure the competitiveness of our customers’ products.

At the same time, the visual appearance of the prod-ucts is also improved. In order to ensure product us-ability and a good user experience many people spe-cially trained in this field are involved in our service. The service covers not only usability training, but also com-prehensive user-centred design, which aims to achieve the optimal end-result through evaluation, simulation and testing.

The physical and mental limitations of people should increasingly be taken into account in product design. Through visualisation we can illustrate how a device or machine functions. Visualisation is also used to assist in training and marketing. To this end, we also have first-class tools at our disposal.

Detail design

Most of the work is performed utilising sophisticat-ed 3D software such as Nupas-Cadmatic and AVEVA Marine. By using 3D design we generate a compre-hensive and accurate model to integrate machinery, equipment, piping, ducting and cable trays with the steel structures. Based on the model we produce the necessary drawings, part lists and CNC data. With our eBrowser software we use the virtual model for visuali-sation in the design process and also during construc-tion at the shipyard.

■ Detailed layouts of machinery, technical spaces, public, crew, and accommodation areas

■ Detailed arrangements of lifeboat and mooring decks

■ Complete 3D product models ■ Prefabrication drawings for e.g. machinery and in-

terior modules ■ Pipe packages, isometrics, and spools ■ Electrical cabling, connection, and circuit diagrams ■ Material and part lists, assembly drawings ■ Nesting of plates and profiles ■ Cutting and bending data for steel structures and

pipes ■ Detailed weight calculation with COG

Prefabrication and modularisation

Elomatic has a long and successful track record of de-livering innovative ideas for modularisation, prefabrica-tion technology and its applications.

The most significant benefits of prefabrication technol-ogy are gained from moving a major part of the work from the ship into workshops. The benefits gained in-crease exponentially with the complexity of the pre-fabricated modules introduced. Elomatic has experi-ence of designing big pre-fabricated modules such as engine casings and AC Rooms.

We have designed modular crew and passenger cab-ins since 1984 for more than 100 different vessels and we have also carried out the design of public spaces for cruise ships based on 100% prefabricated modules.

R&D studies and analyses

We carry out R&D studies in various stages of a project to support the decision making process and help in selection of the appropriate technology and solution. Feasibility studies including technical, logistic, and fi-nancial analyses are carried out to find out the suit-ability of a ship for a certain transportation task or to compare several alternatives in order to find an optimal solution for the operation.

Newbuilding support

Elomatic provides support for the selection of building yards and related negotiations. When a newbuilding contract has been signed we can form or take part in an on-site inspection team that takes care of plan ap-proval and on-site supervision. We assist the shipowner with project management and coordination and after delivery we provide guarantee support and perform troubleshooting on board.

48 The Elomatic Catalogue

New and expected environmental regulations will have a significant impact on the world merchant fleet and require retrofitting of ex-isting ships. Elomatic has the expertise, spe-cial competence, experience and resources to provide the key services required for the suc-cessful implementation of retrofit projects.

We focus on ballast water management, sul-phur scrubbers and other exhaust gas clean-ing solutions, alternative fuels such as LNG as well as energy savings in general. Our system-atic retrofit approach ensures the selection of the most suitable technology, which can be integrated with existing systems and struc-tures and installed in a cost efficient way.

The IMO ship pollution rules set limits for sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from ship exhausts. Eve-ry ship is unique and requires a comprehensive evalu-ation when selecting and planning for the optimal so-lution for the reduction of SOx with scrubbers and NOx with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) plants.

Ballast water

Impending regulations require treatment plants to be installed on most existing ships around the globe. There are several technical, operational and cost con-siderations that have to be taken into account when choosing the right ballast water management solution.

Alternative fuels

Exhaust gas emissions can be reduced by using alter-native fuels to heavy fuel oil such as marine diesel oil or LNG. Dual fuel operation may also be an alternative.

phase 1

The most cost efficient solution

As an independent consultancy service provider we ensure that the most cost efficient and effective so-lution is proposed and that the most suitable sup-plier is selected . Through ship inspections, feasibil-ity studies and technology evaluations we compare alternative solutions and their consequences, taking all technical, operational and economical aspects into account .

phase 2

Successful project execution

The key to a successful retrofit project is custom-made integration design . Our experienced naval ar-chitects and engineers tailor the design and handle classification approvals thereby ensuring efficient installation and avoiding costly surprises . If neces-sary, we use laser scanning to verify the exact input measures from the existing ship .

Elomatic offers its customers engineering know-how that spans all the required disci-plines, thereby allowing us to operate as a one-stop consulting and engineering office.

Our services cover the full life cycle of the en-gineered targets from feasibility studies and concept design to detail design, production support, site supervision and product life cy-cle support.

Way of working

All projects at Elomatic are carefully managed by a pro-ject team manned by experts from the various know-how centres within our office network. We have honed our way of working for 45 years to ensure seamless communication between the teams, accurate sched-uling, coordination and project management. In every project our goal is to deliver the highest quality engi-neering with zero defects.

Each project is scheduled, manned and controlled uti-lising our in-house tailor made software. For document management we use the EloDoc system, which we can integrate with 3D product models and equipment da-tabases to form a base for our lifecycle services.

Product and Service DevelopmentIntegrated approach

We focus on integrated development activities, i.e. the concurrent and controlled completion of different pro-ject phases and know-how areas. The implementation of an integrated development model is a key factor in ensuring that an idea can be processed efficiently into a realised product or service while risks and costs are minimised.

Integrated development projects involve experts from diverse know-how fields including product devel-opment, strategic design, innovation, research, con-ceptualisation, marketing, service design, production engineering all the way up to product and service commercialisation.

Strategic services

We look at business operations as large and compre-hensive entities. Our strategic design services general-ly focus on providing solutions for critical operational success factors so that they can be implemented in a controlled, long-term and efficient manner. Our strate-gic services are often aimed at products, technologies, innovations and design assignments.

It is necessary and often unavoidable to deal with stra-tegic questions when searching for the correct path in the early phases of development and innovation pro-cesses. Via our strategic and innovation services we can also create prerequisites for identifying new products, services and markets for our clients.

Innovation services

We create innovations and manage innovation proj-ects systematically with effective tools. We identify pos-sibilities and new ideas and effectively support our cus-tomers’ product and service development projects and business strategy development.

By focusing our efforts in the front end of innovation projects we ensure delivery of practical improvements.

ÎÎ Innovation Services, p. 94

Research services

Our research services support product and service de-velopment processes and related services. They are di-vided into two main branches: user-centred research and technology research.

User-centred research provides an understanding of the end user’s world and his/her identified and uncon-scious needs. This information about good usability, er-gonomics and design gained from user experience can be transferred to the product or service.

Technology research is conducted to improve our un-derstanding and increase know-how about phenom-ena, which enables us to analyse the functionality and performance of products and production processes. The research allows us to optimise existing products and processes from a technological perspective and to ensure that ongoing development project goals are reached and even exceeded.

Elomatic’s experts apply knowledge and in-formation of human factors to optimise de-sign solutions. They are able to discover and apply information about human behaviour, abilities, limitations and other characteristics that result in optimal design that is produc-tive, safe, comfortable and effective to use.

Usability

In development work related usability we match prod-uct features to the product users’ information manage-ment capabilities – functioning of the senses, observa-tion capabilities, action-related thought processes and information management mechanisms. This results in products that are easier to use. The user can detect and understand the information and act correctly.

Ergonomics

To improve ergonomics we adjust the product or envi-ronment to match the user’s physical features such as anthropometric dimensions and their variations, per-mitted loads, performance levels and functional limi-tations. The correct dimensioning and adequate work task design result in optimal work postures and power generation, good visibility and effective operation.

Accessibility

For targets to be directed at all users – including those with disabilities – accessibility must be taken into con-sideration. Good knowledge of human behaviour, various standards, laws and regulations is essential. Adequate accessibility design creates an operation-al environment that allows different users to achieve their goals regardless what limitations they may have in their abilities or senses.

94 The Elomatic Catalogue

Elomatic provides innovation services to its customers that assist them in implementing innovation projects with the help of system-atic innovation processes and effective tools. Innovation projects generally include four phases: front end of innovation (FEI), research and development, production development and commercialisation. Efficient manage-ment of FEI is crucial in achieving successful innovation projects.

The front end of an innovation process includes, among others, identification of customer needs, spec-ification of idea generation challenges, idea handling and processing, idea evaluation and selection, concept development, protection of innovations and R&D proj-ect idea development.

Our goal is to create the best possible basis for product development, which is the following step in the inno-vation process.

Systematic innovation process

A systematic innovation process ensures that all pos-sibilities are identified, all perspectives are taken into consideration and that all ideas are handled appro-priately.

Successful organisations invest more resources into the front end of innovation processes, gather more ideas outside of the organisation and have created effective operational models to cope with the glut of ideas that are generated.

The Elomatic 3D visualisation team is able to design and implement eye-catching virtual demonstrations and training materials from any design project. Animations are ideal for illustrating the functionality of operational equipment and complex technical solutions even before they have been physically cre-ated. If 3D models of the target object or pro-cess are available, they are used directly for the visualisation. If no 3D models are avail-able, we will create them.

3D visualisation and animation can be used benefi-cially for product presentations, training materials and operational and maintenance instructions. It can be adopted for use in exhibitions or made to be in-teractive. Links can be inserted into the visualisation that provide further information. Narration, music and sounds can be easily added.

3D visualisation supports product development

In addition to marketing, 3D visualisation can be used to gain clear and early impressions of design objects in preliminary process and product design without the use of costly prototypes. Virtual mock-ups save money and time.

simulations ■ Paper machine product presentation ■ Visualisation of vessel loading

and unloading in harbour ■ Product presentation of tractor

3D visualisation aids mechanical design

Visualisations and their initial information that are cre-ated in the preliminary design phase can be used in specific mechanical design as the visualised objects are real and dimensionally accurate. With visualisation material we can simulate usability such as ergonom-ics or visibility.

Benefits ■ High quality marketing materials sell better ■ Enhanced credibility for products and company ■ Decision making is easier with the video simula-

tion, which leads to faster design processes ■ Design errors can be eliminated with simulations

during the early design stages ■ In many cases simulation can fully replace expen-

sive prototypes or test products ■ Representation of complex systems as an anima-

tion makes communication easier and reduces the risk of misunderstandings

Elomatic offers its customers the services of its own virtual reality studio. The studio can be used by designers to review intermediate or final designs by taking different user perspec-tives into consideration. The laboratory can also be rented without a separate engineer-ing commission. The use of virtual reality in design work ensures that decisions are based on the correct information.

In virtual reality the designers can freely explore the designs from any angle and check possible flaws be-fore the product even exists. The virtual environments can be customised to match the operation of machin-ery and devices by reproducing related vibrations and movements. It is possible to add all kinds of interac-tions to the objects in virtual reality from changing colours to moving and rotating objects to new places, changing lighting, character animations, interactions and so on.

3D simulations

Simulations can be viewed with 3D glasses, head-mounted displays or adapted to be viewed on tablets, normal laptops or desktop computers. Simulations can be taken to the customers’ offices or trade shows to market new products. It is also possible to create a web version of the simulation that can be loaded into the web browser and then viewed anywhere in the world.

3D design models can be directly used in virtual real-ity simulations or if the desired 3D models don’t exist we can create them. With the motion capture system we can even bring real-world objects to the simula-tions and record motion data. All the simulations and their contents are customised to the customers’ needs.

Panoramic imaging uses tools that pro-duce precise 360° picture materials of tar-gets. Spherical views that can be rotated and zoomed in all directions are produced from all targets.

Panoramic images can be used to create marketing materials and conceptual images that can be used to present customers with a clear picture of what their finished designs will look like. A 360° panoramic photo is taken of the target, after which elements from the design model are embedded in the image. The con-ceptual images can be used in sales meetings or as il-lustrative materials to aid in decision making.

Panoramic imaging can also serve as the user inter-face in a virtual plant. The user can view several differ-ent images by using tags to move from one image to the next. Target components can be linked to main-tenance systems or functional animations. This allows the user interface to be used as a plant presentation or maintenance tool.

elements being designed

Cheap and effective marketing support tool

A panoramic image has a powerful effect and can be used to create impressive image ensembles. Many im-ages can fit into the image which makes it very inform-ative. For this reason a panoramic image is a cheap and very effective marketing support tool.

With the help of an interactive conceptual image changes in design or final products can be present-ed to the customer in an easy and illustrative manner. The eases and speeds up decision making and design completion.

Useful design support tool

Due to the informative nature of panoramic images they are good supporting tools in design. This reduces design errors and speeds up design significantly.

Using panoramic images as user interfaces adds im-mense value to the target presenter and user. The user interface tags provide more detailed information about targets e.g. when it is a large product, plant, or plant environment.

Elomatic has over ten years’ experience in la-ser scanning and we have several different modern laser scanners from which we choose the best suited device for each customer pro-ject. We utilise the produced point clouds to create 3D models of the objects/facilities or to produce cross section curves, define volumes and conduct shape surveys.

Rebuild objects

In plant renovations we can 3D model all existing ma-chines, devices and constructions of the plant. The ac-curate 3D information facilitates and speeds up de-tailed design remarkably and reduces design errors. With the help of laser scanning total design costs are reduced while installation periods and shutdowns are shortened.

Small objects

Laser scanning also makes it also easy to study small entities. With shape analysis it is possible to study the shapes of objects and possible factory defects or dam-age thus become visible. Scanning creates 3D models for products which do not have drawings. The models are then used for example to facilitate strength calcula-tions, space utilisation design or manufacturing.

Other objects

Laser scanning is also utilised in the fields of mine sur-veying, architecture, accident investigation, conserva-tion of historically valuable objects and visualisations.

A machine vision system consists of a camera and a computer that has graphics software which is able to interpret images automati-cally. Elomatic offers machine vision studies, product development and realisation services for research and development projects.

Elomatic can define the customer’s machine vision de-vices. Different tests and research that have been per-formed beforehand achieve good and working solu-tions. The machine vision solution can be connected to a larger system that raises the degree of automation.

The machine vision solution can also be used in pro-duction optimisation services to make production more efficient. Defective product images can be ar-chived for later review.

Machine vision solutions often add significant benefits to applications related to demanding repetitive work, quality control or identification. Elomatic can deliver machine vision equipment on a turnkey basis.

Data acquisition and reports for analysis

Machine vision systems generally have Ethernet inter-faces that allow flexible data transfer with the facility’s different systems. Pictures of defective products can e.g. be saved on the facility’s server via ftp-transfer. The same information can be transferred to linked opera-tional panels and PCs.

Reports can be generated from the database. The fa-cility’s production system can also output data such as the date of use for the application in the camera. Machines vision systems generally are also equipped with communication protocols to common PLCs and robots.

The machine vision system can fulfil all the target fa-cility’s machine vision requirements, in which case fo-cused data acquisition and analysis can be conducted at either the MES or ERP level.

Elomatic offers extensive production engi-neering and development services whereby we identify and implement solutions for ef-fective and economical production. Our goal is to identify our customers’ production prob-lems and to come up with effective solutions.

We are able to thoroughly analyse products, production, production control, manufacturing technologies, and factory layouts. This helps us to improve resource utili-sation, increase efficiency, identify and eliminate bottle-necks and draw up plans for future growth and capacity. We use well-known Lean tools as well as our other pro-duction development competencies for this purpose.

Our main targets are new factory projects, existing pro-duction development, layout specifications and mate-rial handling systems. Our services include product de-velopment, electrical and automation solutions.

Production performance improvement

Elomatic can run a performance improvement project for your plant. The project describes how to meet man-ufacturing targets (especially lead time and on-time-delivery) and how to apply methods (such as Lean, Theory of Constraints etc.) and technology to your par-ticular case in the best possible way.

The order-delivery process is analysed and improve-ment potential is identified. We focus in particular on improving manufacturing operations (production control, layout, lean methods, etc.). The project is car-ried out together with the customer’s project team to ensure efficient change management from the be-ginning. A roadmap for longer term and short term project plans is created along with an investment schedule. Tools such as value stream mapping and production simulation are used during this interactive process. Elomatic can provide support during the im-plementation and engineering tasks as well.

Production Engineering and Development Services

Page 113: Elomatic Catalogue 2015

3 Elomatic Services 111

Comprehensive range of services

Production equipment engineering

We are able to engineer special production machines and tools for various manufacturing tasks. This includes a variety of different equipment such as welding jigs, assembly fixtures, lifting devices and test benches. The automation level and size of the engineered equip-ment vary depending of the customer’s need.

Production simulations

Elomatic offers production simulation services that pro-duce information and solutions for production devel-opment or analysis. Production simulation can be used to verify the performance and operation of a new fac-tory, line or cell concept. It shows the areas that might need improvement and how a defined system works under dynamic job flow e.g. inventory levels and utili-sation rates.

Simulation is a cost effective way to prevent costly er-rors in incorrectly designed production systems and an excellent trouble shooting tool for existing production environments where the complexity of the operation-al dynamics makes problem areas difficult to pinpoint. Visual simulation (3D) is effective when the idea needs to be presented to a wider audience e.g. for training and investment proposal process.

Production development benefits ■ Reduces production costs ■ Increases throughput and productivity ■ Reduces lead times and WIP ■ Improves delivery promptness ■ Assists planning for future growth and capacity

HSE (Health, Safety and the Environment)

Reliable maintenance

The maintenance program is defined as function spec-ifications in the EloWise database and maintenance tasks are automatically generated from the specifica-tions. The timing of the tasks depends on the calen-dar or running hours of the automation system. Spare parts and other material information as well as storage data is defined and the stock status is kept up-to-date based on input of storage events.

Manuals and drawings needed for a particular mainte-nance task are directly available through references in the task card. EloWise keeps track of the maintenance task status and the overall situation is shown in a dash-board view. Relevant reports and statistics can be gen-erated as required.

In an EPCM project the customer has only one interface with the project implementation par-ty. The EPCM consultant acts as the client’s rep-resentative and takes care of the entire project coordination and implementation in accord-ance with the client’s goals and design reali-ties. Other suppliers have a direct contractual relationship with the customer, allowing the customer to manage the financing.

Elomatic’s EPCM delivery method includes fully com-prehensive design, procurement and construction management. Elomatic also provides extensive servic-es for quality assurance, safety and regulatory affairs to ensure the success of the project. These services com-bined with project management services are carried out throughout the entire project life cycle.

Why EPCM?

The EPCM concept is beneficial and suitable for differ-ent kinds of projects. Some of the main reasons to con-sider an EPCM delivery include the following:

■ The customer can participate in the implementa-tion throughout the project

■ Tight schedule ■ It is possible to overlap project phases ■ The customer wants to reserve the right to

change designs ■ Costs are not finalised but are in the hands of ex-

perts ■ The customer has the possibility benefit from

cheap supplies ■ Has the most neutral relationship to market con-

ditions of all implementation methods

Risk analyses

Usually, a risk analysis forms the basis of all our endeav-ours. However, legislation requires a formal and struc-tured risk analysis to be performed for all design work and operations. ATEX

Employers handling combustible materials are obliged to prepare an Explosion Protection Document, in which they need to identify explosion hazards in the workplace and classify the workplace into zones (0, 1, 2 for gases, 20, 21, 22 for dusts) based on the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere forming. They also need to control the sources of ignition by e.g. selecting equip-ment that has a suitable classification for each zone.

ÎÎ ATEX, p. 134

Pressure equipment

Almost all equipment including, piping, vessels, and assemblies is subject to the European Pressure Direc-tive (PED), in case the internal overpressure is greater than 0.5 bar. Depending on the equipment type, con-tents, and pressure the equipment is categorised into categories ranging from SEP (Sound Engineering Prac-tice, no CE mark to be attached) to Class 4, which is the most stringent category regarding documentation and inspection measures.

ÎÎ Pressure Equipment, p. 135

Chemical safety

Chemicals are used in some form in almost every area of life. The dangers that the chemicals pose are related to occupational exposure, fire and explosions, and en-vironmental hazards to name but a few. The authorities are setting up new limits to minimise these hazards, but there will always remain a certain level of danger. Elomatic can help you assess the hazards and suggest/design the required measures.

What if?

Consider the following scenario:

On the site the employer had mounted guardrails around the edges of a 3 metres deep shaft. The height and other properties of the rails were according to the applicable requirements.

Very close to the edge, an electrician noticed that an electrical installation was missing at approximately 2.5 metres height, and decided to mount it from a ladder. The only precaution he took was to ask a fellow work-er to hold his ladder, while he climbed up to complete the installation.

He came down safely, when he was ready, but what if he had fallen? He probably never would have had the chance to regret his choice of working method.

Our unique know-how combines a thorough understanding of Good Manufacturing Prac-tices (GMPs) with a profound knowledge of the technical details of pharmaceutical man-ufacturing facilities and systems. We have gained our experience from several projects executed in many countries during the past two decades.

If handled correctly, validation is an integral part of pro-ject management. When engaging Elomatic in your project, you will benefit from our services in sever-al ways; gaining e.g. cost savings and avoiding time schedule delays thanks to a well-managed project.

Fewer quality issues and surprises at later stages of your investment project can also be expected as we take a proactive, systematic and pragmatic approach to the project at hand. The earlier errors and deficien-cies can be identified, the bigger the cost savings are.

Errors that are identified in the design phase can be seen as 1x costs, errors identified during testing and validation as 10x costs, and errors identified in produc-tion as 100x costs.

Implementation and validation of a new automation system

The customer needed a new control system for their water distribution system. Elomatic was engaged to design, implement and validate the system. First, writ-ten specifications (user requirements) were drawn up. Based on those specifications, the design and imple-mentation work was carried out.

Commissioning and qualification protocols were drawn up, including the required testing to show con-formance with the specifications. The customer was given system training and the project was wrapped up with commissioning testing and qualification sum-maries and reporting.

Energy audits aim to lower energy and wa-ter consumption, related costs and CO₂ emis-sions. Energy audits clarify the target facility’s whole energy consumption, energy potential and derived profitability.

The Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy subsidises energy audits that have been conducted according to the Motiva model. The subsidy covers a maximum of 40–60% of the energy audit costs. Clear benefits can be derived from energy audits.

■ Cost savings; also without investments ■ Improvements in instrument monitoring and en-

ergy efficiency ■ Basic information about device condition and

performance ■ Reduction in CO₂ emissions

Expert audit services

Elomatic’s expert auditors conduct energy audits ac-cording to the Motiva model for industry, communes and real estate. The audits are conducted by Motiva trained and qualified auditors that have diverse expe-rience of energy projects.

Elomatic implements the audit phases from measure-ments to reports according to the customer’s needs. The close cooperation continues throughout the en-tire life cycle of realisation projects. The customer has Elomatic’s entire range of expertise and experience at its disposal.

“Over 50% of suggested savings measures produced by audits have a payback

period of less than two years”

Energy audit models

Industrial energy audits focus on the potential of pro-duction processes and real estate to reduce energy and water consumption.

Renewable energy municipal audits clarify the renew-able energy production potential of the communal area and the financial viability of increasing local en-ergy production.

In district heating energy audits and power plant en-ergy analyses the possibility of increasing efficiency of energy production, transfer and distribution is investi-gated. The goal is to improve cost efficiency.

Building energy audits focus on identifying possible savings in real estate HVAC and electrical devices and their methods of use.

Suggested savings measures

The audits result in suggested measures that are ac-companied by clear calculations of the cost savings that can be achieved. The calculations for the sug-gested savings measures can be directly used for in-vestment decision making and for compiling subsidy applications.

Typically suggested measures ■ Making use of lost heat in process water and ex-

haust air with the help of a heat pump ■ Improving maintenance and efficiency of heat re-

covery devices ■ Changing operation times of air ventilation and

lighting ■ Correcting compressed air network leaks ■ Replacing oil with renewable energy

140 The Elomatic Catalogue

Elomatic’s technical analysis experts con-duct different structural analyses and support product development and design. Elomatic’s customers include small and large domestic and international equipment suppliers, engi-neering offices and machine works.

The technical analysis method can be used to solve complex problems, which may include heat transfer, flow elements with several different interactions, or chemical reactions.

Technical analysis can also be applied in large pro-jects. Energy efficiency, environmental friendliness and shorter product development cycles are examples of benefits achieved by technical analysis.

The use of technical analysis is continuously expanding – imagination is the only boundary. In future technical analysis will be used, e.g., to solve multiphysical prob-lems. Real-time fluid-structure interaction (FSI) will be possible in future.

CFD, FEM and CEM

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was developed to numerically solve flow and thermal problems. It is based on the finite volume method, where the entire analysis area is divided into discrete control volumes.

In addition to CFD, Elomatic employs the Finite Ele-ment Method (FEM). Structural analysis is best suited to the concept and design phases. It can be most ben-eficially applied for design-related structural, vibration, fatigue and heat analyses for new parts and structures. Existing structures can also be analysed to study and correct identified problems.

Computational electromagnetics (CEM) simulates nu-merically different electromagnetic phenomena. The analysis results can e.g. extend the life span of different mechanical equipment and reduce electromagnetic disturbances in measurement devices.

Part of product development

Technical analysis is an integral part of product devel-opment. It allows products to be tested before proto-type construction. By ensuring structural integrity at the outset of the design phase, engineering can be guided in the right direction to achieve an optimal product without expensive prototype testing.

Technical analysis often reduces material consumption. and has become an integral part of modern product development processes due to its seamless integration with virtual design work.

Savings via simulation

Problem solving and optimisation related work on ex-isting targets are common application areas. In many fields it is costly to shut down devices for troubleshoot-ing or maintenance. It may be difficult, impossible or unprofitable to take measurements. With technical analysis the problem areas can be identified virtually and the best solutions presented in the model.

The effects of changes on system operation can also be simulated before making structural changes. It is possible, for example, to produce reliable lifespan esti-mates or redefine load bearing capabilities.

Technical analysis benefits ■ Significant savings in product development ■ Minimisation of need for prototypes ■ Optimised structures ■ Cost efficient method of comparing alternative

models ■ Energy efficiency ■ Environmental friendliness ■ Method can visualise the most inaccessible places ■ Greater knowledge about flow features and effects ■ Improved error identification

Broad application scope

In addition to engineering works and process indus-tries, flows play an important part in HVAC. The use of CFD in civil engineering results in more comfortable, functional and energy efficient working spaces, apart-ments and car parks.

By lowering vibration we can reduce machine and de-vice noise and extend device lifespan. In the design phase, knowledge regarding the interaction between material flow and product structure speeds up produc-tion processes and improves product functionality and energy efficiency.

By studying a structure’s stress distribution it can be determined whether it will withstand given loads.

Caligo SX B – Basic flue gas scrubber

This is our basic unit. It includes flue gas particle and SO₂ filtering, one heat recovery area as well as conden-sate and sludge handling.

Caligo SX HPC – Flue gas scrubber with heat pump connector

This unit is recommended if the basic flue gas scrub-ber is sufficient for current needs, but the district heat-ing return temperatures may rise in future, e.g. when more industrial customers are added to the network. The scrubber has space reserved for a second heat re-covery area and heat pump connector (does not in-clude heat pump).

Caligo SX HP – Flue gas scrubber with heat pump

The Caligo SX HP model comes with a connected heat pump. The patented heat pump connector ensures maximum heat recovery even when return district heating temperatures are high. In such cases a basic scrubber’s heat recovery crashes. This solution can save even over 30% of yearly fuel costs.

Caligo WTX B – Condensate treatment unit

The condensate treatment unit can also be delivered as a separate unit. It handles condensate treatment, filtering and sludge separation completely indepen-dently. The treated condensate can be fed into the wastewater drain.
