Independent Reading System
Ongoing assessment continually matches the right instruction and the right books to every child. In the same classroom, advanced readers can read above-grade-level books, while struggling readers can find books that allow them to develop their reading skills.
Nurture Academically Successful Home Routines
Parents act as Home Coaches, supervising 30 minutes of home reading each night. Take-Home Skills Cards empower families by communicating exactly which skills their children are working on. This enables them to participate through coaching at home and helps to accelerate their children’s progress.

Districts across the country trust American Reading Company as the curator for their classroom libraries for 3 main reasons:
Use Multi-Perspective, Multi-Cultural Materials
• We’ve spent the last 20 years evaluating and reviewing virtually every book in print from every publisher.
• We offer over 5,000 classroom libraries for every instructional purpose, K–12, English/Spanish.
• We custom design collections for partners all over the country.
Independent Reading Level
…and then located on our developmental taxonomy of
reading acquisition.
To determine reading level, every book is double-blind, hand-leveled using the three legs of text complexity…
Reading Level and Grade Appropriateness are evaluated separately.
Grade Appropriateness
Elementary School High School
SCHOLARS has been designed exclusively for teenagers. Books in this module feature topics that are particularly compelling to high school readers, from sports to romance, peer pressure to fast cars. Scholars is intended for students in Grades 9-12 and is not appropriate for children under 13. Language is not restricted.
VARSITY has been designed exclusively for students in middle school. Books are selected to make the collection look mature, while also avoiding content too mature for preteen readers.
Middle School
In order to provide the right books to engage any student in any school, collections are balanced for:
• Fiction and Nonfiction
• Ethnicity of main character
• Genre
There are 20 unique baskets at each and every level.
Balanced Collections
• “Boy” and “Girl” Interests
• Kid Appeal
• Quality Literature
