Calhoun Academy 4th Graders Visit the Museum
The students in Beth Felder’s 4th grade class from Calhoun Academy in St. Matthews were given a tour
of the museum by long-time Docents Van Stickles and Sarah Ann Parler. There were 20 students, ten in each
group. The Docents even questioned the children regarding all they learned on their tour. These students
thoroughly enjoyed their visit. The Docents loved their time with this young tour group also.
A Special note: The admission fees
for this school group was paid by
grant funds available at the museum.
This grant is available for school
tours. It covers part of the cost of a
field trip, thus allowing the teachers
to focus on other things such as
transportation, etc.
2018 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon
The volunteers were honored at a luncheon on April 10th at the museum. President John McLaurin
welcomed everyone and expressed the museum’s appreciation to the volunteers for all they do. Cindy
McKeowen, local singer from Cameron, SC, entertained with several inspirational songs as well as a message
about the importance of serving others, which is exactly what our volunteers do. Everyone enjoyed a delicious
lunch and left with a gift of appreciation. The museum has been extremely fortunate to have a great group of
wonderful volunteers since its very beginning.
Pieced Quilts Tell A Story
Quilts have been displayed in the museum from its 2002 beginning. In fact, quilts (belonging to Milt Felder’s
mother, Momma Rose), were displayed in the windows along Cleveland Street as the museum was being built. As
a tribute to Snider’s cabin and its importance to the town and to the museum,
Mayor Vernon Shirer on October 25, 1997, proclaimed the log cabin quilt as
Elloree’s official quilt pattern. Dot Shirer made and donated to the museum
a lovely log cabin quilt which now resides on the porch railing of Snider’s
Cabin.
One of our earliest exhibits in the upstairs galleries was locally made
antique quilts that were loaned to the museum from families in Elloree. It was a beautiful display showing work-
manship, varied patterns, and fabric from years past.
The museum received a quilt entitled “Elloree Cotton Bolls” pieced, appliqued,
and donated by Marinetta Farris, the mother of Nana Farris, our then director. The
quilt was quilted by the Lake Marion Piecemakers and Mrs. Farris, completed in
2006. It has been on display on numerous occasions as it depicts cotton bolls, and
even has boll weevils on the corners! Mrs. Farris also made and hand quilted a nose-
gay quilt for a fundraiser to benefit the museum in 2007.
Another favorite quilt was made by the Daughters of the
Confederacy (Circa 1942) as a fundraiser. Families paid to sign their names in the stripping
portions of the quilt. Many of the names are from families that we recognize and fondly
remember.
A very special quilt that has been on display is from the
original quilt design by Dorothy H. Parler. She sent the design and the pieced top to
“Good Housekeeping” magazine which quilted it. The pattern for this quilt was lat-
er ordered from “Good Housekeeping” by William Fogle. The quilt was then
appliqued, put together, and quilted by Mary Neil Rickenbaker in 1960. It is owned
by William Fogle of Elloree. Mrs. Dolly was quite an artist and camellias were her
favorite subject to paint.
We have also had the Lake Marion Piecemakers Guild display their beautiful handiwork filling the upstairs
gallery. Among them were prize winners from competitions and fairs.
For many years we have had a very special local volunteer, Mrs. Daisy Kolb, who would bring a quilt from
her collection or one of her quilt guild’s for the museum to display on its special quilt display area. This has truly
been a favorite for locals and visitors to check out and enjoy. With great kindness and support, the Lake Marion
Piecemakers Guild has agreed to continue Mrs. Daisy’s sharing gesture after her recent death. They have already
supplied us with beautiful works for our display. We always look forward to seeing their handiwork.

Shop Snider’s Store !
Gifts for all ages! All seasons! All year long!
Lake time is here and Snider’s Store has many special lake items from a variety
of dish towels, to fish plates, “alligators”, and duck calls.
Visitors
These visitors from Tennessee and Mississippi were listening intently to the
audio tour as they rested on one of the benches. Their complimentary report
when finishing the tour was encouraging. The two brothers (one was around the
corner) grew up on a farm and thoroughly enjoyed discussing the exhibits that
brought back so many memories. The ladies completed the audio tour a little
quicker than the guys so they could shop in Snider’s Store. It was our pleasure
to get to know them and we hope they will come back in the near future.
Once again the Elloree Heritage Museum and Cultural Center, Inc. has proven
to be a hidden gem.
Mr. Snider is talking about the summer camps coming up. The teachers
are always full of lots of ideas wrapped in lots of fun. Make sure your
campers get registered soon as possible. These camps fill up fast.
