Eye-Level This is the most common view, being the real-world angle that we are

all used to. It shows subjects as we would expect to see them in real life. It is a fairly neutral shot.

Camera Angles

This shot displays a eye-level shot of a car scene, the fact that the audience are on the same eye-level with her allows us to connect with her more and therefore feel her emotions. I think we should use the eye-level angle for a majority of our filming in a car scene as we want it to show the thugs as we would expect to see them in real life.

High Angle A high angle shows the subject from above, i.e. the camera is angled

down towards the subject. This has the effect of diminishing the subject, making them appear less powerful, less significant or even submissive.

Camera Angles

This picture demonstrates a high angle. The girl is clearly being looked down on therefore it displays that she is powerless. We most definitely will be avoiding this shot for the car scene because we want the thugs to look menacing and powerful, and certainly not un-significant.

Low Angle This shows the subject from below, giving them the impression of

being more powerful or dominant.

Camera Angles

This image illustrates a low angle shot in a car scene, this shot will be very useful for our opening sequence as we want the thugs in the car to come across as powerful and controlling characters. However, we need to be careful as we don’t want the audience to be influenced by their nauseating actions.

Bird's Eye The scene is shown from directly above. This is a completely different

and somewhat unnatural point of view which can be used for dramatic effect or for showing a different three-dimensional perspective. In drama it can be used to show the positions and motions of different characters and objects, enabling the viewer to see things the characters can't.

Camera Angles

This picture shows a birds eye view of a car scene. This shot will not be relevant to our scene because our car will not be moving and we don’t need to express the different spatial perspectives.

Slanted/Canted This is where the camera is purposely tilted to one side so the horizon

is on an angle. This creates an interesting and dramatic effect. Famous examples include the Batman series.

Camera Angles

This image displays a canted angle shot in a car scene. It creates chaotic atmosphere and makes everything seem a bit out of hand. This shot will not be relevant to our opening sequence as firstly, our car isn’t moving, and secondly we don’t want to create a chaotic atmosphere.

Mise-en-scène

What is the mise-en-scène?

Mise-en-scène encompasses the most recognizable attributes of a film – the setting and the actors; it includes costumes and make-up, props, and all the other natural and artificial details that characterize the spaces filmed.

It’s very important for a thug scene to be set off the road somewhere very tranquil and discreet as we don’t want there to be anyone around who could witness the situation and not allow the thugs to do their actions properly. However, the setting also needs to be quite near to a busy location to allow the thugs to rapidly take the child out of a crowd without anyone noticing. Overall, we decided to film in a school because it is a busy area where there are constantly crowds of people, also there is a small and noiseless car park right by the school gates therefore this is a perfect location for our scene.

Setting

This picture illustrates a group of thugs in a quiet location. The use of quiet location helps to create more tension in the audience as we will feel more sympathy for the girl getting kidnapped.

Costume

Thugs Dan (good guy)

Baggy jeans that barely sit on your hips are very popular for thugs to wear, along with a white baggy t-shirt or some form of baseball shirt and a pair of trainers, it’s vital that their tacky personality matches their dress sense.

As Dan is on his way to work and is the former boss of the thugs, he needs to be wearing a suit to show high authority and wealth. It’s important that there is a clear distinction between these two characters in the way they dress.

The image displayed by the thugs is very important for the representation of how the actors are represented. A stereotypical thug has: a fierce look about them, they normally have dark/baldish hair, dark circles under their eyes and are normally un-shaven. They have to act with a filthy manner and not come across nicely to the audience.

It’s very important to use an intensity of hard lighting in the thug scene as this will create clearly defined shadows which will make the atmosphere appear more scary and mysterious. Artificial lighting is often a common source of lighting used to create these shadows but natural sunlight is often used as well to indicate the time of day. Finally ,back lighting is very popular with these kind of dark scenes because it creates a strong contrast between the object and the background.

Lighting

This screen-shot displays back lighting as the person stands out. This will be very effective in our opening sequence because we want the figures of the thugs to stand out clearly, whilst there are shadows in the back of the car. The use of the dark lighting will make it more mysterious and alarming.

In an action film it is vital that there is some form of prop that will indicate mystery e.g. a gun, knife or a car. One of the James Bond films (Skyfall) use a gun and a car. The use of the car is very effective as it gives the audience the impression that they are trying to escape or capture something, this corresponds well to our opening sequence as we want to make clear to the audience that the thugs are trying to kidnap Dan’s sister. The car is our main prop and it should create suspense for the audience as they will initially want to know the purpose for it.

Props

The picture of these cars show that they are parked in a car-park full of cars but with no-one around. This is the exact kind of location we plan to have our car as there are no witnesses around to complain about the actions of the thugs.
