WHY ARE ELEPHANTS IN DANGER?  The Ivory Trade: Although internationally banned by CITES in 1986, the ivory trade has grown in recent decades. 30,000 – 50,000 elephants a year killed for their ivory. Habitat: Elephants habitat is disappearing fast. Due to human development and slash and burn techniques for agricultural purposes. This means people cut down forests and burn them to make room for farming.

•  Our elephants are unsociable due to the way they were raised

•  Blair Drummond Safari Park acts as a sanctuary for these dysfunctional elderly elephants

Human-elephant conflict: Wildlife conflict is common in many parts of the world,

elephants are especially susceptible due to their massive home range. Elephants will walk through villages to get to more food. People get scared of them and shoot the elephants for disturbing them and eating their crops.

Many innovative techniques are being designed to help stop elephants entering villages. Such as bee fences to deter them

away and iving fences made of spiky trees so they can’t get through.
