    What is the Gold Standard?

Non-profit foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland

The global benchmark certification scheme for high quality carbon

reduction projects in both compliance and voluntary carbon markets

Independently verified to deliver real, measurable, permanentgreenhouse gas reductions and sustainable development

The only standard to incorporate Monitoring, Reporting & Verification for

sustainable development and environmental co-benefits - for all projects

Actively supported by 75 NGOs worldwide, including WWF, Greenpeace

    & Mercy Corps

Buyers include Swiss Post, Deutsche Post, DHL, Nokia, Virgin Atlantic,

H&M, TUI Travel, FIFA and multiple governments

Trusted by the United Nations as the standard for its carbon projects

    The criteria are simple...

    Renewable Energy or End-Use Energy

    Efficiency

    Additional

Follow two-step stakeholder involvement i.e.design phase & feedback round

    Sustainable Development Assessment (self

    assessment & stakeholder consultation), Do

No-Harm assessment (safeguardingprinciples) and Sustainable Development

    matrix

Kuyasa Low Cost Urban Housing Energy Upgrade

Co-benefits: Reduction in local air pollution

    Decreases in pulmonary pneumonia, carbon

monoxide poisoning and other respiratory illnesses

Decrease in accidents and damage to property as

    a result of fire.

    GS337 VER Energy EfficiencySouth Africa 6,580 tCO2e/yr

The project activity aims to make the thermal performance of heating water and lighting for

low-income housing (existing and future) more efficient, resulting to less power

    consumption. Estimated by suppressed demand.

    Zengammina Mini Hydro Scheme

    GS355 VER Renewable EnergyZambia : 2,923 tCO2e/yr

This 700KW run-of-river mini hydro scheme

    provides cheap, clean and sustainable

    electric power to Mwinilunga district

    Kalene Mission, North Western Province,

    Zambia.

It removes dependence on diesel generators

and supplies the local hospital, farms, village

and the chiefs palace with electricity. The

project also provides an inexpensive energy

option for lighting (displacing kerosene). It

creates the basis of a self sustaining,

    developing local economy, and contributes

    significantly to poverty reduction.

    Zengammina Mini Hydro Scheme

    GS355 VER Renewable EnergyZambia : 2,923 tCO2e/yr

    Sustainable and Measurable Results:

    Created approximately 450 jobs at

the peal, a large proportion of which

are women. For many, this job

    represented their first cash income.

    * Provides electricity in the local

    schools, giving children access to

computers in the Sakeji school, in the

    Kalene hospital where operations can

now be undertaken at all times and in

homes where people will have access

to electric light on demand for the first

    time

    D.light Rural Lighting Project India

    GS600 CER Renewable EnergyIndia 130,000 tCO2e/yr

Over 1 million D.light LED solar lighting products are being distributed in

the Indian states of Uttar, Pradesh, and Bihar. A similar project is

currently being developed in Tanzania (GS679)

    Co-Benefits:

    Improved health conditions

    Reduced indoor air pollution

    Improved quality of life

Income generation Better lighting at home for

    reading, studying or handicrafts

    Eliminates fire accidents from

    flame based light

Federal Intertrade Haiyuan Solar Cooker Project

    GS710 CER Renewable EnergyChina 33,482 tCO2e/yr

The project will install 17,000 solar cookers for the poor rural residents in

mountainous area and thus enabling them to efficiently substitute solar

energy for the fossil fuel (coal) used in daily cooking and water boiling.

    * Each solar cooker

    has a power rating

    of 773.5W

    Total installed

    capacity is13.1MW

    Located in

    southern Ningxia

    in northwestern

    China

Federal Intertrade Haiyuan Solar Cooker Project

    GS710 CER Renewable EnergyChina 33,482 tCO2e/yr

    Co-Benefits:

The project will serve as a model for future

project and stimulate the interests of investors

in solar energy projects. Promote the use of clean energy

Educate and train the rural population on

solar energy technology, and build awareness in

    environmental protection among the rural

    population.

The experienced personnel trained by this

project can assist other projects in the future.

Reduce CO2 emissions generated by coal-fired

    stoves.

    Proyecto Mirador Enhanced Distribution

of Efficient WoodstovesGS690 VER Energy EfficiencyHonduras 38,149 tCO2e/yr

This project reduces indoor air pollution by disseminating improved wood

stoves called La Justa to the local areas around the Santa Barbara Province of

Honduras. The La Justa was engineered to burn hotter and use less wood

compared to a traditional fogon stove.

A field study showed that the

    replacement of one traditional fogon

stove with one La Justa (Model 2x3)

stove reduces greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions by 1.9 mtCO2e/year. This

project is estimated to reduce emission

over 38,000 emissions annually. That is

the equivalent of taking more than

12,000 tonnes of rubbish out of landfill.

Case study cont: Contribution to sustainable development

    Improves air quality

    Reduces living costs for families

    Decreases child and adult mortality

    Creates local employment opportunities

Facilitates transfer of technical knowledge Helps reduce the burden on limited natural resources

    Contributes to local/regional economy

Helps prevent respiratory illnesses caused by toxic gases

Reduces time devoted to wood collection and/or money

    spent on wood

Serves as a model for other stove projects by monetising

    certified carbon saving

Carbon Finance enables a move from charitable donations

to a model that is self-sustaining and market driven
