A Message from our Exalted Ruler

Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.)

Greetings Members,

Here it is November already and the start of the holiday season. This is one of the times of

year when we as a Lodge start getting busy to help our community and families. I have applied

for a grant to help the Tacoma Rescue Mission again this year and see no reason for it not to be approved.

The PERs had their second year of pumpkin carving (I announced it as the second annual event, but was

corrected by the Grammar Police at the Lodge meeting). This year we only had four kids there old enough to

carve a pumpkin; for one it was his first time to ever try carving a pumpkin. I want to thank all of the

volunteers who showed up to help and became the big kids carving their jack-o-lanterns. I want to express a

very heart-felt thank you to PER Bill Fabyunkey for starting this tradition and acquiring the pumpkins, and a

special thanks to Cappy’s Produce for donating a crate of pumpkins for the second year.

With the holidays on the way, our meeting schedules will be changing. There will be no meeting on the 23rd

since it is the day before Thanksgiving. We will also have reduced meetings in December and January.

Remember to attend our second Holiday Bazaar on the 18th and 19th of this month. If you would like to get a

table, there is still time to reserve one. Please call the Lodge at (253) 272-1117 for more information and to

reserve your table.

On Thursday night, December 1st, we have Wally and the Beaves performing. Please come to the Lodge to

have a good time and show your support.

Now is the time to start planning how you will spend your New Year’s Eve. We have the Great Pretenders per-

forming that night and if you purchase your tickets by the 15th of this month you will save money because the

prices will go up after that. There will be appetizers, a champagne toast at midnight, and fun had by all.

I’m looking forward to seeing all of you this month at our many events and remember we are still selling the

raffle tickets to raise money for our State Therapy Program.

Fraternally,

From the Desk of Lodge Secretary

Lee Frankie

The Tacoma Lodge and friends of the Lodge want to thank Larry

Mattingly and Pyro Consultants LLC for the wonderful fireworks

display they provided on October 8th. The event was greatly

appreciated by all in attendance.

“Our Kids” Washington Elks Therapy Program for Children, Inc.

Our State Major Project

Meet Rosa!!! Rosa has DiGeorge Syndrome, which is caused by a deletion on the 22nd chromosome.

Among other things, this most commonly causes heart defects and poor immune

function. Rosa’s heart issues required surgery at five days old. She spent many

months in the hospital before she was stable enough to go home.

Rosa was referred to the Elks’ Therapy Program when she was six months old.

The program was ideal for her, since getting a common cold would result in

lengthy hospitalizations due to her compromised immune system. By having

therapy at home, she would have a reduced risk of becoming ill.

Rosa needed to learn so much since her health and movement were limited while

in the hospital. In addition to motor skills, Rosa needed to learn to eat orally.

She had been receiving all her nutrition through a tube that passed through her

nose and into her stomach (an NG-tube).

The therapist worked with Rosa’s family and a dietitian to find food that

Rosa could eat and slowly expanded that list. After about 20 months Rosa

no longer needed her NG-tube! She was on her way to looking and acting

more like a typical toddler. Therapy services were tapered off and just

before she turned 4 years old, she was doing great and was discharged from

therapy.

Less than 6 months later, Rosa’s partially-repaired heart could not keep up

with the activities and demands of a 4-1/2 year

old. She consistently did not have enough oxygen

in her blood. The heart wrenching decision was

made to do yet another heart surgery. This meant

undoing much of what had been done previously.

It required a great deal of faith from her parents, who were terrified at the poten-

tial risks of such a major surgery.

Thanks to technology, the new surgeon was able to practice the surgery several

times on a 3-D printed model of Rosa’s heart. The surgery was a success, but it

did require another lengthy hospital stay and it set Rosa’s eating back again.

Once she was back home, but still not eating enough, Rosa’s parents reached out

to the Elks’ Therapist who had helped before. This time around, it took much

less time for Rosa to get back on track and begin eating more like a 5-year-old.

with assisting in October’s Lodge Open House, organiz-

Bazaar, working with Pierce County Alliance for our Foster Christmas

Project, and beginning preparations for our annual Spring Luncheon.

This year during the Christmas season, we will be able to assist 25 young adults who

have aged-out of foster care, thanks to our

very successful dessert sales at the summer barbecues. We have such fun

shopping for special gifts for these young people and any children they have. We

Members Golf Package

Our Lodge is blessed to own a golf course that has a great layout, is superbly maintained, and has what realtors say is the most important attribute: Location, Location, and Location. The golf course is, has, and will continue to be a profitable endeavor for the Tacoma Lodge. The future is very bright at the golf course. Tacoma Elks member-only prices:

Weekday (M-F) unlimited $1,087.75

7 day unlimited $1,603.00

This includes all state and local taxes

Lodge membership fee is not included The golf course is in brilliant shape. We should all be very thankful that our course is in the able hands of our Superintendent Lynn Elliot. Lynn and his crew continue to keep the course in amazing condition. Our greens are rolling like it’s 90 degrees in August, and the consensus from the people who golf here is that they are as fast and true as the local country clubs. Even if you are not an annual golf member, there are always discounted green fees for Tacoma Elks members, so please take advantage of being a Tacoma Elk. The next time you’re planning a golf outing, look no further than YOUR golf course, Allenmore Golf Course, in the heart of Tacoma. I can be reached anytime by e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 253-627-7211. I look forward to working with our membership and I’m always open to any and all suggestions. Thank you.
