Momentum is an interdisciplinary approach

to introducing students to the Liberal Arts and helping them prepare for the academic expectations of college. The program is called Momentum because the purpose is to help students build momentum toward their transformative experience at Elizabethtown College. The program establishes a momentum students will maintain throughout their development in college.

Momentum is designed to prepare students for college, assisting them in an effort to get the most from their liberal education, and become an integral part of the community. The Momentum program is a stimulus for students to become energized about Elizabethtown College and help them maintain this energy, motion, activity as they grow as student leaders.

The Momentum program has been designed for students to become informed, responsible, self-directed learners. Elizabethtown College and the Momentum program, in particular, provide students with an integrative, transformative liberal education as the most powerful pathway to achieving their personal and academic goals.

The Momentum program begins with a seven day pre-fall orientation summer immersion experience for first generation students to facilitate the most integrative and meaningful connections possible. The main goal of the Momentum pre-orientation program is to introduce students to the campus culture and the high standards of performance we expect at Elizabethtown College. Momentum provides intentional, hands-on curricular learning experiences connecting students to aspects of the core curriculum and disciplinary majors. The faculty and staff led sessions of the program represent an extension of in-depth learning drawing on the core curriculum and major programs.

Momentum continues for the student

throughout their college experience providing supplemental advising, in collaboration with the student’s primary faculty advisor and upper class student peer academic advisors, called Kinesis – the energy behind a momentum, helping students discover key resources and strategies necessary for college success.

Essentially Momentum is a microcosm of Elizabethtown College: an intentionally designed learning environment working doggedly to maximize student learning, and particularly student learning related to higher-order skills and abilities allowing the student to be “educated for service” becoming citizens and leaders of the world, thus the mission of a liberal education.

Momentum Students on the Appalachian Trail

Our students choose from among almost fifty

academic programs. Driven by our commitment to “Educate for Service” our teaching and advising is grounded in strong relationships, linking classroom instruction with experiential learning, emphasizing international and cross-cultural perspectives and nurturing the capacity for lives of purpose and leadership as global citizens. Our college has a strong heritage of personal and social responsibility as a necessary, rather than optional, component of a liberal education. The Momentum program is based on the concept of how a liberal education remains the best preparation for citizenship, work, life, and leadership. We are empowering students to develop as leaders with the ability to act as change agents on our campus, in the local community, nationally, and the world.

We believe a liberal education is, at its core, transformational; our faculty and staff intentionally develop curricular and extra-curricular experiences liberating the mind (the informed piece) IMAGINE, cultivate in students a sense of personal and social responsibility (the responsibility component) INSPIRE, and empower students to be change agents (the self-directed piece) IMPACT. The educational philosophy of the Momentum program is grounded in an understanding of how we must educate students broadly and deeply, assisting them in drawing connections between various experiences, so they can achieve academic excellence and develop as leaders to create a campus culture of inclusive excellence.
