I make none of the decisions in my house. We’ve developed a system that works for us, and it’s very simple. For most decisions she considers the possibilities and then

tells me what to do.

Stop laughing; sometimes life is about process as much as compromise. Making decisions easier is what our editorial team is all about. They’re curators of everything from haute style to incredible food. We recognize that you lead busy lives, so our staff takes the decision-making challenge into their own hands by bringing you some of the hottest fashion tips, best events, and financial advice.

I hope that Elite Tampa Bay proves to be one of your favorite publications. My hunch is that your reaction to this magazine will be twofold. First, you’ll see the beautiful quality of the publication, the stunning photography, and learn about trends that you didn’t even see on the horizon. Second, you will be well ahead of the curve on your spring style this year after reading what’s hot for this year’s spring fashion season.

Next month we will be bringing you advice from one of our partners on how to keep as much of your hard-earned income as possible this tax season, reviewing some of the bay area’s hottest new restaurants, and giving you the ‘inside track’ on the best events that are coming to our city.

And please don’t forget: There’s plenty ahead as the calendar changes, including the opportunities to reach new heights and become the person that you have always wanted to be.

As years and months are born, we often look back to reflect upon the road we’ve traveled. For me, it’s overwhelmingly rewarding to hear from so many readers, industry partners, and advertisers about the state of our magazine-from who we are and what we feature to our gorgeous design. Your kind words are the reason that I get up early and go to bed late every day eager to help tens of thousands of readers discover our beautiful city.

Keep getting better everyday,

Motorcycles: FUN OR FATAL?

Our gorgeous Florida weather and picturesque scen-ery makes motorcycle riding an inviting adventure

nearly all year round. This is true not only for our residents but it attracts riders from all over the coun-try. High gas prices are another factor that push more people to buy motorcycles as a cost effective alterna-tive to automobiles. Unfortunately with the increase in the number of riders, Florida has seen a rise in the frequency of motorcycle accidents as well as the inju-ries associated with them.

By Thomas Parnell

Page 14: Elite Tampa Bay February 2014

14 Elite Tampa Bay February 2014

The accident statistics for motorcycle riders is frightening. Florida continues to rank high in the number of motorcycle deaths, with 287 fatal motorcycle crashes in the first 9 months of 2013. That number is expected to grow in 2014. The risk begins from the moment the rider enters the roadway. Many riders are simply not experienced enough to deal with the many perils that await them at every turn. These perils run the gamut from roadway debris, distracted drivers, aggressive drivers, speeders, the elderly and many other factors which make riding a motorcycle in Florida a dangerous proposition.

Our Legislature is well aware of the inherent risks and has established a mandatory Motorcycle Driver Endorsement (FS 322.12) which one must earn after a rider based training course. You can’t legally drive a motorcycle without completing this training which has helped significantly. However the Legislature eliminated the requirement that riders wear a helmet which according to statistics increases the chance of dying in a crash by 40%. For every mile traveled, there is a 30 times higher risk of getting killed on a motorcycle than riding in a car.

While it is difficult or impossible to avoid many of the perils that put even the most experienced rider in danger, there are several things that you can do to reduce the risk of an accident. First, practice your skills until you feel completely comfortable with the motorcycle. Also, make sure your motorcycle is in proper working order. This includes the horn, turn signals and brakes. Plan your route to avoid high congestion areas during peak hours if possible. Most important is maintaining a constant state of vigilance and never assuming the automobile driver sees you or is going to obey the rules of the road.

If you are injured in a motorcycle accident you have the right to seek just and fair compensation from the other driver. These damages include medical expenses, property damage claims, lost wages, and pain and suffering. At Gibbs and Parnell, we have handled hundreds of motorcycle injury claims and have the experience and resources to help get you the justice you deserve.

Florida continues to rank high in the number of motorcycle deaths, with 287 fatal motorcycle crashes in the first 9 months of 2013.

ABOUT THE AUTHORThomas Parnell has practiced law for nearly 30 years in Tampa. He was born and raised in Tampa hasbeen married for 28 years and raised his two children here. He has tried numerous cases in many jurisdictions including Circuit Courts, Federal Courts, Appellate courts and the Florida Supreme Court. He began a multi faceted law firm but truly enjoyed helping injury victims. Tom is one of the few attorneys that truly love trial work and became convinced that the only way to recover the most money possible for his clients is for the insurance companies to know that he would go to trial. Early in his career he had several clients hire him after their second accident. When asked why they didn’t go back to the previous attorney they said that the attorney and the doctors took all the settlement money. He vowed to himself that none of his clients would ever be able to say that. It became a procedure at his firm that when a case was being settled and after all the medical bills and other costs were deducted, if the client was receiving less money than the attorney’s fee, the fees would be reduced so that the client received more. That is his promise to all of his clients. If you become his client and he makes a recovery for you his entire team will work tirelessly to keep you informed and to maximize your recovery. You will not take home less money than they receive in attorney’s fees. If you or a loved one has been injured, call him. It may be the most important phone call that you ever make.

Valentine’s DayFACTS ABOUT LOVE AND

There are various theories on the origin of Valentine’s Day, but the most popular dates back to the time of the Roman Empire during the reign of Claudius II, 270

A.D. Claudius didn’t want men to marry during wartime because he believed single men made better soldiers. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, Valentine was jailed and then executed by order of the Emperor on Feb. 14. While in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailor’s daughter, signing it, “From your Valentine.” Sound familiar?

MORE VALENTINE’S DAY-RELATED HISTORY• The ancient Romans celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia on Feb. 14 in honor of Juno, the queen of the Roman gods and goddesses. Juno was also the goddess of women and marriage.

• Many believe the X symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn’t write their names signed in front of a witness with an X. The X was then kissed to show their sincerity.

• Girls of medieval times ate bizarre foods on St. Valentine’s Day to make them dream of their future spouse.

• In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression “to wear your heart on your sleeve.”

• In 1537, England’s King Henry VII officially declared Feb. 14 the holiday of St. Valentine’s Day.

FLOWERS• 73 percent of people who buy flowers for Valentine’s Day are men, while only 27 percent are women.

• 15 percent of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine’s Day.

ROSES• The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love.

• Red roses are considered the flower of love because the color red stands for strong romantic feelings.

• 189 million stems of roses are sold in the U.S. on Valentine’s Day.

• California produces 60 percent of American roses, but the greater number sold on Valentine’s Day in the U.S. are imported, mostly from South America.

• Approximately 110 million roses, mostly red, will be sold and delivered within the three-day Valentine’s Day time period.

Page 19: Elite Tampa Bay February 2014

February 2014 Elite Tampa Bay 19

GREETING CARDS• Approximately 345 million valentines are sent in the U.S. each year according to estimates by the U.S. Greeting Card Association. That’s second only to Christmas with 1.6 billion units, and is followed by Mother’s Day with 133 million units.

• Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.

• Over 50 percent of all Valentine’s Day cards are purchased in the six days prior to the holiday, making Valentine’s Day a procrastinator’s delight.

• Teachers will receive the most Valentine’s Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets.

AND... MORE FUN FACTS ABOUT VALENTINE’S DAY• In addition to the U.S., Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, France, Australia, Denmark and Italy.

• The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife.

• In the 1800s doctors commonly advised their heartbroken patients to eat chocolate, claiming it would sooth their pain. To this day, many women find comfort in a box of chocolates when dealing with heartbreak.

• A love knot is a symbol of undying love, as its twisting loops have no beginning and no end. In the past, they were made of ribbon or drawn on paper to prove one’s eternal love.

• Every Valentine’s Day, the Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet.

• About 3 percent of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their pets.

• 220,000 is the average number of wedding proposals on Valentine’s Day each year.

• In the U.S., 64 percent of men do not make plans in advance for a romantic Valentine’s Day with their sweethearts.

“It is so beautiful and so moving in many ways! They are doing an absolutely

beautiful and incredible job.”— Vikki Carr, singer & four Grammy Awards winner

A Shen Yun ShOW is a fusion of classical arts with modern appeal. As one audience

member put it, “It’s like a fashion show, opera, concert, and dance performance all rolled into one.” The passion of the artists spurs them to bring all these elements together into one extraordinary experience.

CLASSICAL CHINESE DANCE

Classical Chinese dance is a vast dance system tempered over thousands of years. It is one way in which 5,000 years of Chinese culture have been passed down and retained. It is a dance form built on profound traditional aesthetics. Richly expressive, it portrays personalities and feelings with unparalleled clarity, depicting any scene in a strikingly vivid way.

In addition to the classical form, Shen Yun features the distinctive colors and styles of ethnic dance and folk dance. With over 20 dynasties and 50 ethnic groups to draw upon, Shen Yun portrays an astounding range on stage with color and exhilarating energy.

THE SHEN YUN ORCHESTRA

The Shen Yun Performing Arts Orchestra masterfully blends two of the world’s greatest classical music traditions, Chinese and Western. Ancient Chinese instruments such as the soul-stirring erhu and the delicate pipa, lead the melody on top of a full Western orchestra, creating a fresh, glorious sound.

EXQUISITE COSTUMES

Apparel has always been an essential part of China’s five-millennia-old culture, and Shen Yun Performing Arts brings this heritage to life on stage. From radiant golden-hued Tang Dynasty gowns to elegant Manchu chopine shoes, each costume is designed and tailored with meticulous care.

STUNNING BACKDROPS

Shen Yun’s breathtaking dynamic backdrops bring classical Chinese dance into the 21st century, adding visual depth and grandeur. Each backdrop is custom designed to exactly match the costumes, storyline, lighting, and even choreography of each dance.

Luxury Vehicles2014’S HOTTEST

Page 25: Elite Tampa Bay February 2014

February 2014 Elite Tampa Bay 25

Last year felt like the year that automakers refreshed many of the top-selling main-stream models on the market; now 2014 is the year of new luxury vehicles. I

can’t recall a single year when so many all-new and redesigned luxury vehicles have taken form; and as we put together our list of Elite Tampa Bay’s List of the best luxury cars to be introduced in 2014, it’s no surprise that there were a few more contenders here than in other categories. With each model year, the term ‘luxury’ evolves just a bit, it seems—and the idea of what makes a luxury car has changed profoundly in the past decade or two. Everyone associates luxury with step-above comfort, top-tier materials, and exclusivity. That much has remained the same. And if the brand goes above and beyond, and it altogether makes you feel special, or it makes you look better, that’s luxury, too.

As the country’s economy continues to get back on its feet, buyers are flocking to dealerships to replace their aging vehicles, and in many cases, upgrade them. Today’s consumer is more demanding and savvy than ever and this year the auto manufacturers have stepped up to the plate and delivered in a big way. Take a look at our list of nominees for 2014’s best new luxury vehicles.

MERCEDES-BENZ S CLASSBristling with technology and gadgets, the spaceship-like engineering is only one part of the Mercedes S Class story: elegant, luxurious, sensuous, and bold are words that get thrown around. The car also boasts a low-speed autonomous driving mode, steering that automatically keeps the car centered between lane markers on the highway, and the ability to anticipate road imperfections in its path and adjust the suspension accordingly to maintain a butter-smooth ride

2. JAGUAR F-TYPEAs the first roadster from Jaguar in more than four decades, the new F-Type sports a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine that generates either 340 horsepower or 380 horsepower — depending on the version — while a 5.0-liter 495-horsepower supercharged V8 is also available. Coupled with a seven-speed transmission and dropped into a lightweight frame and body, the new Jag is nearly guaranteed to live up to its British sports car heritage.

Mercedes says it will be one of the most aerodynamic car designs among production cars, and takes its cues from the larger CLS class. Buyers can choose between a 240 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the 428i and a 300-horsepower 3.0-liter turbo-six in the 435i. The all-wheel xDrive is optional, and the 4 Series comes in three trim lines: Luxury, Sport, and M Sport.

6. INFINITI Q50The Q50 is the first in line for Infiniti’s (NSANY.PK) full brand redesign, and it’s safe to say that it’s struck a winning formula. The car is appropriately sensual, with sleek, flowing lines and curves that put the Q50 among the more graceful-looking luxury cars. Forbes reports that “a new i-Key system allows up to four motorists to customize a wide range of operating parameters, automatically recognizing the user and adjusting everything from seat, mirror, and climate control settings to radio presets and stored navigation destinations.

7. ACURA RLXAfter a series of lukewarm attempts to compete in the high-end market, it seems that Acura (NYSE:HMC) is coming back with a renewed commitment to the segment with the RLX. Though the RLX doesn’t come with a turbo-charged or V8 option, it’s expected to pack a 370 horsepower V6 down the road.

To improve the handling, Acura has also outfitted the car with a four-wheel steering system, causing the rear wheels to angle slightly and sharpen the car’s agility through the turns.

A controversial entry to be sure, but Kia is making great strides to up its image from the cheap, value-first economy cars that gave the company a presence in the U.S. in the first place. With the Cadenza, Kia is essentially doing what Hyundai did with the Equus — though perhaps not to the same extent. And while it certainly lacks the stature that the S Class and others command, it likely won’t command the same price, either.

The Cadenza, while down a bit in the engine and power department, will offer an array of extra features like powered retractable sunshades.

should i hire a personal trainer?

By Ray Loeffler

With the prevalence of the internet and information on all of our gadgets, is there a need to hire a personal trainer? Being a personal trainer I’m understandably

very biased with my answer. However, I looked at the industry from afar for some time before I decided to become one and this article will share what I found that convinced me of the need for a personal trainer, despite how much information is available to us today. In addition, should you decide you take the next step in your fitness, we will address what questions you can ask to make sure you pick the right professional for your needs.

If we think about it, the best athletes in the world all have personal and team trainers. Celebrities also have the same. You would think that they also have access to the most cutting edge information and technology, so why add someone else to the payroll? Some may think it’s because they are so wealthy that it doesn’t matter or because it shows a certain status. While this may contribute, even the wealthiest people don’t like to hand over money for no reason and there are many other ways to enhance your status. With that being said, status or disposable income are not the reasons that athletes and celebrities hire trainers.Below are 3 reasons that people REALLY hire trainers:

1. Accountability – For many, the intentions to enhance your

physical being are always there but the actions that follow aren’t. Are you one of the “I’ll start on Monday” people, but Monday never happens? When you pay someone for their time and you are accountable to them too, there is a far greater chance that you can start and stick to a program.

2. Motivation – This may be the single biggest reason. Your results can be dramatically enhanced when you have someone planning out your regimen, showing you how to do it and, most importantly, pushing you to do it to the best of your ability. A workout partner can certainly help with these things, but a trainer is solely devoted to you and your success!

Page 40: Elite Tampa Bay February 2014

Page 41: Elite Tampa Bay February 2014

February 2014 Elite Tampa Bay 41

3. Expertise - If you were ill and wanted to get better, you would most likely seek the guidance and care of a physician wouldn’t you? If you wanted to retire comfortably, you would probably seek the advice of an accountant or financial planner, preferably both! The same holds true here. Working with a good personal trainer and gaining their expertise is an investment your best commodity, your health!

The cost is usually the single greatest deterrent for people that are making this consideration. Below are 4 questions you can ask a potential trainer candidate to see if you could get a better deal.

1. Are you an independent trainer or do you work for the health club? You can find good people in both scenarios but independent trainers usually have more flexibility with pricing. This is because they work for themselves whereas the employee usually has rates set by the health club and less flexibility in giving deals.

2. What is the hourly rate and do you give discounts for buying in bulk? Most trainers do have set hourly rates, however, if you buy a larger package of sessions, you may be able to get a per session discount. Training is a longer term commitment anyways, so this could be very beneficial.

3. Do you give discounts for off peak times? If you have the flexibility to workout during the mid-morning or mid –afternoon, you may be able to get better rates from the trainer because theses spots are harder to fill than before and after work, or lunch time.

4. Do you give discounts for training more than one person at a time? This is an area to really consider because it can be beneficial on a lot of fronts. First, most trainers including myself, would gladly reduce their per hour rate per person in this scenario because it is the same hour of time and when added up, it usually turns out to benefit all parties involved. Personally, I also really like this because you now have extra incentive with a friend, spouse or workout partner, to achieve all of your goals with the extra accountability and support. I have a few clients that use this format right now and it works great for everyone involved!

Let’s face it, most of us have no problem shelling out money for an expensive night on the town, but we rationalize that investing in our health is too expensive. This could be one of the most beneficial decisions you make in your life and should be given some really serious consideration. Shortly after seeing his father pass away unexpectedly at 56 years of age and having lived a relatively unhealthy lifestyle himself, he decided to make some drastic changes. After dropping substantial amounts of weight and body fat while improving strength and seeing drastic positive changes on his blood work, this personal mission became a passion that he wanted to share with others.

After spending 10 years in the corporate world, Ray is fully aware of that challenges that face those trying to improve their health, fitness and performance. He understands that individual goals and the circumstances that accompany them, are different for everyone. For this reason, a cookie cutter approach is never used by Ray. 1. PLEATS PLEASE The pleated skirt was everywhere on the SS14 catwalks, from Antipodium to Roksanda Ilincic and J.W. Anderson. Of course, pleats have been around for a while but you can bring the trend bang up to date for spring by opting for a knife pleat in an iridescent fabric, as seen at Christopher Kane’s standout show.

2. BROAD BRUSH STROKESPrada, Chanel and Celine all got the Pantone charts and paint pots out for the new season, with murals adorning dresses and paint daubed across smock shirts and jackets.

3. SWEET LIKE CANDYWho can forget Burberry’s candy striped show finale under falling rose petals back in September? Those pastel lace separates and embellished trench coats will no doubt be much imitated on the high street.

4. BERMUDA/CITY SHORTSBermuda shorts featured on many of the catwalks for SS14, including Topshop Unique and Ashley Williams, and will be perfect worn with your pool sliders and bomber jacket, or with a 90s spaghetti strap top when it’s warm. Alternatively, go for more formal, floral city shorts, which will look amazing for a summer wedding, or with a shirt for the office.

5. SHEER BRILLIANCESheer fabrics were used by designers from Preen to Calvin Klein and Fyodor Golan. A black skirt with a sheer panel at the bottom is an easy way of accessing this look without baring a little too much. Wear with a sweatshirt on cooler days or a boxy crop top for summer.

6. STEALTH BOMBEREven as we watched the Jonathan Saunders psychedelic silk bomber jackets slink down the runway, we knew everyone would be after an exotic bomber to keep them warm on cold spring days.

7. CULOTTESCulottes are the trouser shape of the season and look great worn with high heel pumps and a crisp white shirt as seen at Victoria Beckham’s SS14 show and on the lady herself. If you want to take them up a level, wear them with a strikingly brightly colored shirt.

What do you need in a vacation? Comfort without fuss? Warmth mixed with refreshing trade winds? Natural beauty? Excellence in service performed at a relaxed pace with a certain charm? Then make some time for the Turks & Caicos Islands, where your pulse rate is sure to slow down.

Turks and Caicos is actually made up of over 40 islands and cays east south east of the Bahamas, spanning a distance of less than 100 miles from east to west and even fewer north to south. Just eight are inhabited, each reflecting distinct natural beauty, history and culture. Most visitors spend their time on Providenciales, the perfect place to unwind, but trips to the outer islands are highly recommended if you are looking to get a better impression of this small lively nation. Scheduled air flights and well organized excursions are readily available.

Providenciales’ Grace Bay Beach consistently receives accolades as the world’s best beach. It was named after Grace Hutchings, an early visitor in 1892, in honor of her beauty, style and of course grace. This pristine 12 mile beach seems to have that perfect combination of fine white powder sand, expansive vistas, constant breezes and yet no crowds. The sea colors will stay with you forever; shades of Tiffany blue, turquoise, cobalt and more; and the sunsets are not to be missed. Many of the country’s most luxurious resorts are here, making for easy movement between one world class refreshment experience to another. Of course there’s nothing like becoming a ‘local’ in your own luxury resort, and one that has received the World Travel Award for the Caribbean’s Leading Boutique Hotel from 2005 to 2010 is Point Grace, Luxury Resort & Spa. The resort is appropriately named as it sits on the ‘point’ half way along Grace Bay Beach where with it’s expanse of white sand and untamed beauty you feel like you are on your own desert island. The resort’s magnificent suites, restaurants and spa are all inspired by classic turn-of-the-century British Colonial architecture creating a West Indian setting untouched by time.

The islands are a divers feast with close to shore wall drops of up to 8,000 feet. Humpback whales pass by during Spring whaling season. Nature can be found in many forms from turtles to osprey eagles. Fitness lovers will find quality gyms, classes and water-sports with expert tuition. Kite-boarding, triathlons, 5/10K runs, sea-swims are all pursuits to join in. Tennis, golf and horse-back riding are all catered for, again with experts on hand. Fishing from bone fishing to deep sea fishing is world class. There is plenty to do if you are looking to be active.

World class chefs seek to impress you with their signature dishes creating a cosmopolitan fare, but C a r i b b e a n and native-style dishes abound with the fresh catch of the day and the country’s own Conch. Dining is everything from a simple to luxurious experience. You’ll find a huge selection of wines and drinks on offer too. Point Grace’s elegant gourmet restaurant, Grace’s Cottage, has specialized in pairing fine wines with inspired cuisine for many years now. Come, take time to enjoy cuisine at it’s best, in the best possible settings.

Your body and soul have already entered a new dimension, where you feel energized but utterly peaceful. The Point Grace Thalasso Spa is all you need to further the restoration process. Treatments are European in style; Thalassotherapy using the islands natural resources and Thalgo products. The setting is truly West Indian; white washed exquisite cottages just set back from the natural beach dunes with inspiring sea views and breezes.

Turks and Caicos is very accessible with many international flights. It’s just over an hour from Miami and two and a half hours from New York amongst many routes. Your first vision of the islands from the plane will be awe inspiring. You’ll finally know you are on vacation. Getting through the soon to be expanded small airport terminal is fine but a discrete courteous fast track VIP Flyers service is available; Turks and Caicos will give you the luxury you desire at every step.

Those that live in the islands keep their history and culture close to their hearts, but they also move with the times and going-green, ecotourism and government-reform are all hot topics. There is certainly a pride in the islands that we do things our way, we don’t just follow others, and that gives the islands a spirit all to their own. If you chose to visit Turks and Caicos you’d very likely become one of our many return visitors, so we hope to see you very soon.

BAD NEWS FOR 2014The bad news for 2014 is that a number of tax breaks will have expired. Congress may extend, or even make permanent, a number of these breaks, but it is unclear when that might happen.

Some of the expired tax breaks which affect homeowners are:

• The ability to deduct premiums for mortgage insurance (PMI) provided by private mortgage insurance companies, the Rural Housing Service, the Federal Housing Administration, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

• The ability to exclude on a principal residence up to $2 million in taxable income because of debt forgiven in a foreclosure or forgiven by a lender in a short sale or mortgage restructuring. Originally, expected to expire in 2009, it was extended. The impact will vary from state to state, though, with the credit expiring. Several states have anti-deficiency legislation in place. Florida does not.

• The ability to take a maximum lifetime tax credit of up to $500 for energy efficiency improvements in their primary residence.

Another bit of bad news is that home interest rates are on the rise. According to Fannie Mae’s latest Economic and Housing Outlook report, interest rates are expected to hit 5.3 percent in 2014.

Let’s take a look at the impact a rise in rates would have on homeowners. If a person purchases a home today with a rate of 4.285%, a monthly principle and interest payment on a $300,000 home with 20% down- the payment would be $1,168 per month. However, if the rate jumps to 5.3 percent, as forecasted, the monthly payment would increase by $165 to $1,333 for principle and interest. As you can see, homes would become less affordable and property values might see an adjustment downward.

INDIFFERENT NEWS FOR 2014In January, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act goes into effect.

Its affect is unclear. The act is designed to minimize the risk that borrowers may default on residential mortgages. Debt ratios are limited to 43 percent and loan fees to 3 percent. Negative amortization and interest-only loans will not be permitted.

The downside is making changes an agreement to correct a mistake will be prohibited and it will take longer and be more difficult to obtain a loan. Competition for mortgage lenders also may decrease.

GOOD NEWS FOR 2014Despite the expiring tax credits, risig interest rates and the new protection act, it’s not all bad news.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency has said it won’t reduce the $417,000 Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac conforming loan limit.

Home sales are forecasted to rise 10 percent in 2014, according to the National Association of Realtors and inventory is at a 13 year low. Home prices are expected to rise 6 percent.

And there’s good news for those who have been through a short sale. Some lenders have begun offering loans just one year after the homebuyer has gone through a short sale. This means some renters can rejoin the buying pool sooner than they could in the past.

GOOD NEWS FOR 2014 THE SOUTH TAMPA AREAIn South Tampa the real estate market has been steadily improving. The National Association of Realtors has named Tampa one of 10 housing markets it believes will see a housing turnaround.

Signs of the turnaround have already begun in South Tampa’s 33629 zip code. When Oct. 2012 is compared to Oct. 2013, the average selling price in all categories increased with three bedroom condos and townhouses seeing the largest increase – nearly 48 percent.

The number of properties sold increased and average days on the market decreased from 102 to 67. Both detached single family homes and attached homes such as condos saw increases. In fact, home prices increased by 26.51% percent! In October of 2012, the average selling price was $423,696. This past October, it was $535,998.

This momentum is expected to continue in the future. 2014 is going to be a great year.

In 2013, the Tampa Housing Market saw a rebound. If you’ve been following the headlines, some of the most popular trends reported here in the Greater Tampa

Bay Area were focused on historically low inventory and real estate bidding wars. We’ve seen it all in the last year! Will this rebound hold true for the duration of 2014? What upcoming changes will affect future buying and selling?

Beautifully positioned on a two-mile stretch of talcum-powder beach - considered by many as the finest in the Caribbean - The Meridian Club is an environmentally-sensitive private island re-sort ideally suited for those seeking an unspoiled, upscale but unpretentious retreat. With no automobiles, televisions, radios or telephones, guests unwind and enjoy the island’s natural beau-ty. Soothing trade winds ensure comfortable temperatures and low humidity while surrounding waters teem with marine life. Underwater visibility often exceeds 100 feet and there are miles of coral gardens within a five minute boat ride. Ashore, Pine Cay remains a pristine natural haven with vast open space and seven freshwater ponds, a perfect habitat for the abundant local fauna and flora. Aside from the obvious – bask in the sun on a deserted beach – guests can enjoy a variety of activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, biking, playing basketball or tennis, and the most popular … taking golf carts out to explore the island.

Culinary AdventuresMornings begin with freshly brewed coffee, fresh-baked pastries and breakfast on a private screened porch, with the option to join other guests at outdoor tables on the pool terrace. In the af-ternoon visitors have the option of a tasty buffet lunch, often off the grill, or a more adventurous picnic lunch (prepared upon re-quest.) The club offers only the freshest seafood - locally caught ocean fish, lobster and conch prepared in various styles. There are other options, such as steak, chops, rack of lamb, duck and Cornish hen, and the award-winning chef prepares vegetarian meals upon request. With an new pastry chef this season, the club is excited to continue the tradition of fine desserts, beauti-fully presented with coffee or cordials.

Spa OfferingsThe Sand Dollar Spa, staffed by a Balinese masseuse, offers spe-cialty spa techniques, including massage, hot stone treatment, manicures, pedicures, and facials. Balinese massage is a high-ly evolved, distinctive form employing a combination of gentle stretches, deep tissue kneading, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and “qi” (energy) around your body, bringing relaxation and a sense of wellness. An ancient technique, related to the Ayurveda, the Indian holis-tic medical system, this type of massage is known to help with a wide range of ailments, including migraine, muscle and joint pain, sleep disorder, anxiety and depression, as well as allergies and breathing problems such as asthma which often are wors-ened by stress. The use of oils is calming and sensual and leaves guests feeling tranquil and serene.

FishingWith great fishing only 20 minutes off shore and a boat ride that in itself is an memorable excursion, many who visit Pine Cay come for the fishing or include fishing in their visit to the island. From deep sea fishing to fishing in the flats, there is always some-thing interesting for any level fisherman. Some take their catch back to our chef and have it prepared for the next meal, while others enjoy “catch and release” for the sport of it. Whatever your pleasure, if you plan to fish during your Caribbean vacation, many say Pine Cay is the best option.
