What Next?
What are you looking for in your new career? The chance to make a name for yourself? The chance to make a difference? Training? Progression? Rewards? All of the above?
Wouldn’t it be great if a company could answer all those questions for you, while asking you to answer some of the biggest questions around for them? Like, what’s the future of healthcare? Or what does a truly global business look like? And, how do you help millions of people worldwide to do more, feel better and live longer?
Are you a graduate with ambitions in Sales, Marketing, Communications, Finance, Science, IT, Purchasing, Engineering or Health Outcomes? Or are you looking for a truly rewarding placement? Have you visited www.gskbigquestions.com yet?

ANSWER THE BIG QUESTIONS
2012E LITE 10
Most of us are familiar with the famous Four P’s in our marketing modules but what about the Four P’s for presenting ourselves in the competitive job market?
Marketing Yourself
PERSONALITYWe are what we are, different and
unique, without a duplicate in this world. There's really not much point trying to be someone else to fit into the mould or trying to create a perceived identity whom you are not. With time & stresses along the way, the real you may just eventually crack up. HR professionals are usually looking for someone who is real, confident & has certain character traits that will suit the company's culture. So just be comfortable in your skin & find an environment that is compatible with who you truly are to have a sustainable career in that workplace.
PEOPLEMANAGEMENT
In an academic environment, our excellence is highly dependent on our own efforts & capabilities. We can, to a certain extent, be a lone ranger or “nerd-mit”, and still excel in school. However, being in a working environment is usually not the case. HR professionals need team players who know how to get along with their peers in their work teams. The multi-functional aspects in a company, on top of the diverse backgrounds of your colleagues, will definitely require one’s attention & skills in people management to bring out the best results. Never underestimate the basic qualities of respect, courtesy & humility to mould yourself to be someone who is easy to work with. The feedback from the people around you may eventually determine how well you can succeed in your career.
PASSIONEveryone of us is naturally more inclined
and enthusiastic towards certain subjects, industries or issues in our society. Instead of being a Jack of all trades, why not invest in an area that paves your way to be a Master of it? This seemingly over-used term of “being passionate about your job” may not be that cliche after all. When challenges come & when sacrifices have to be made for the job to be done, it's down to the inner fire & believe that's all worthy which will stand you out from the crowd. At the end of the day, actions do speak louder than words. And there's no greater fuel for actions than the simple reasons of loving what you are doing.
PAYThere has been a trend of HR
professionals giving feedback about the unrealistic pay expectations from fresh graduates in the market. Though there may be above-the-norm, highly attractive pay packages which your friends are supposedly getting, do also recognize that these may be the exceptional cases. Most companies & almost all industries have existing salary reports & scales which newcomers are expected to oblige to. Your willingness & openness to negotiate on your pay may just be the pivotal point of getting you a job. Insisting on a higher pay package may create a negative impression on oneself too. Winning the war is definitely more worthwhile than winning the battle alone and with the volatile job market, securing a job is already a victory in itself.

For young professionals or the so called “yuppies”, career debates are usually related to high salaries and career paths.
Often, they find themselves confused about what to pick between two good but differently natured job offers. Usually, one job offer is from a big and well-established corporation, but the pay is low. The other involves a big amount for basic salary, but the reputation of the “offering” company is yet to be formed…so to speak, it hasn’t established anything in the corporate world yet. No name or reputation or whatsoever yet.
Now, the trap for most yuppies is that they tend to choose salary over path. Not saying that all established corporations offer golden career paths like genies, but that’s usually the case. These companies have been around for years and are generally more knowledgeable about the erratic behaviours of the recruitment in Singapore arena. That said, they tend to be more appreciative of the HR agenda of harnessing and improving talents for years than the opposite agenda of acquiring and re-acquiring talents. Regardless of industry, from financial jobs and banking jobs to arts jobs, there’s a lot in store for the yuppie in the aspect of training and development under old corporations.
The ridiculous upside in signing with a young corporation is that, again, the pay is really high. What’s more, the work environment is also very suitable for fans of career freedom. There’s a reason why the yuppies are easily attracted to these kinds of offers. After all, if you’re into laissez faire working, how can you resist a contract that entitles you for a large amount of money every month amidst enjoyable working arrangements?
The logical choice is to go with path. Always. The risks are very little under this situation; however, yes, you’d have to endure the low salary consequence. If that’s okay with you and you see the training and development aspect of the “path” job offer really attractive, then go for it. Let your friends brag about earning more than you. Give them that bragging right. What you have is something much more than that, which is a stable future: Something more practical in an erratic work world like Singapore’s.
If you honestly think that going for the low pay just to get training is ridiculous, then sign with the younger corporation. If you’re unfazed by the way the Singapore work world does things, then stick with your choice. You’re not being forced to sign something you don’t like, after all. It’s just that the most logical thing to do in Singapore when you’re torn between two different job offers is to side with stability. Prevention is better than cure, after all. But again, it’s your call.
The path vs. money debate among yuppies is, actually, not as serious as “quality vs. quantity” and “pay vs. passion”. Stability is and will always be the safest way to go in Singapore, but you’re not being forced to make a decision that’s contrary to your ideals.
Whatever your choice is, just remember to weigh in all your options before you make anything final. We hope you end up picking the best offer for yourself !

To a company, interns come and go with forgettable names and faces at times. How then can you create a deeper impression on your potential future employers during
your stint with the organisation?
Take your internship seriously u Especially if you are planning to get a full-time offer thereafter.
Go the extra mile u It’s easier to impress when the expectations weren’t there in the first place.
Be neat & tidy u Not just your attire but down to your excelsheet & workstation.
Dare to ask u Raising queries imply your interest in the job, that you are not just another task taker.
Be on time & don’t leave work earlier u Skiving is one of the fastest ways to gain a negative reputation.
Be polite & respectful u Not just to your superior but to everyone down to the janitor.
Ask for more uCompleting your tasks earlier creates the opportunity to ask for more
assignments; a sure way to show your superiors that you are efficient & productive.
Be teachable u A know-it-all attitude is a sure turn-off to the people who’ve been contributing to
the company even before your existence.
Stay attentive u Especially to instructions given. It is not a display of poor memory to note down
steps; you will be thankful you did once the guiding hand is gone.
Dress appropriately & professionallyu This is an unspoken marker by superiors & peers on how well you project yourself & the company.
Stop playing with your phone u Even during group meetings cause you are hired to work, not to chat & surf.

Every year, the Graduate Employment Survey (GES) is conducted by the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the Singapore Management University (SMU), to survey the employment conditions of graduates, about six months after
their graduation. In the 2011 GES, 12,998 graduates from these three universities were surveyed with an overall response rate of 75%. Some key indicators, as published by the Ministry of Education (MOE), are listed in the following tables for your reference#.

Frequently Asked Question:
What is the difference between mean and median salaries? The Mean monthly salary is an average of the salaries of the full-time permanently employed graduates. The Median monthly salary is the salary of the ‘central’ (i.e. 50th Percentile) graduate in the set of full-time permanently employed graduates when they are arranged in a sequential order by salary. It is useful to refer to these 2 indicators together. The median is a useful reference when the salary data is not evenly distributed (e.g. when the group contains graduates with exceptionally low or high salaries, especially when the number of respondents is relatively small).
For example, although the median gross monthly salary for the Business Management course offered by SMU shows that 50% of the graduates are earning $3,020 or less, the mean gross monthly salary is about $3,369. This indicates that there are some high earners who have raised the mean salary. In contrast, the mean gross monthly salary of Social Sciences graduates is relatively similar to the median gross monthly salary. This indicates that salaries are more evenly distributed on both sides of the median for this group of graduates.

Additional Notes:# MOE has taken all reasonable steps to ensure the accuracy of the data but will not be liable for any inaccuries. Students should make use of the data at their own discretion.1. The employment rates refer to the number of graduates employed as a proportion of economically active graduates (i.e. Graduates who have entered the labour market) as at 1 Nov
2011 (i.e. approximately 6 months after completing their final examinations).2. Overall employment includes all types of full-time and part-time/temporary employment.3. Full-time permanent employment refers to employment of at least 35 hours a week and where the employment is not temporary. It includes those on contracts of one year or more.4. Gross monthly salary pertains only to full-time permanently employed graduates. It comprises the basic salary, fixed allowances, overtime pay and commissions. Employer’s CPF
contributions, bonuses, stock options, other lump sum payments, and payments-in-kind are excluded5. Data on law, medical, pharmacy and architecture graduates are obtained from a follow-up survey on 2010 graduates after they have completed their 1-year practical law course/
pupilage or serve housemanship.6. SMU’s courses are direct 4-yr programmes and graduates could be awarded Cum Laude and above, Merit, High Merit or no awards. The data for SMU’s courses above is displayed
in 2 categories: (i) overall results for all graduates within the course regardless of the award they attained, and (ii) results for the graduates awarded Cum Laude and above. Should the graduates undertake more than 1 Degree (e.g. Dual Degree programme), they have been classified based on the first Degree.
7. Each of the above tables reflects the preliminary results of the employment survey.
**: No data is shown due to the small number/proportion of respondents.
