“Yet There Is Hope” Isaiah 11:1-10
Key Text: “Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard” (Isa. 58:8) Key Thought: We see in the message of Isaiah a call to live into God’s kingdom plan and live into His promised hope.
1. Intro & Context:
2. Recalcitrant Israel: Isa. 1:2-20 (a) False worship: “These people come near to me w/ their mouth
and honor me w/ their lips, but their hearts are far from me…” (29:13)
(b) Rebellion (30:9-11) (c) Idolatry (44:9-20; 46:1-4)
3. God’s grand plan: Isa. 2:2-5 (a) A day of dread: 2:8—11
i. Chief sins that bring it about: Idolatry, greed, haughtiness, abuse of the poor (cf. 3:14-15), neglect of widows & orphans (10:1-2)
ii. The nations will be judged and punished (ch. 13-24)
iii. The Lord’s judgment will bring punishment both on earth and in the heavens (24:21)
(b) A joyous end i. Like a great feast! 25:6-8 ii. Perfect peace: 26:3 iii. Healing: 29:18-19 iv. Clear understanding: 32:1-5, 15, 17 v. Strength: 40:30-31 vi. Fearless b/c of God’s protection: 43:1-3 vii. Salvation for ALL nations: “… for my house will
be called a house of prayer for all nations” (56:7b)
4. The promise of a Messiah: (a) Immanuel, born of a virgin (7:14) (b) For unto us a child is born… (9:6-7) (c) A branch of Jesse (11:1-16) (d) His suffering (52:13-53:12) & resurrection (53:11)
5. Repentance spelled out (58:1-14)
6. Conclusion QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION:
Are you, in any way, showing recalcitrant behavior toward God? Where do you need to repent?
Or are you living for yourself? Are you living for God? All out?
What changes do you need to make to live more fully into God’s kingdom plan, and so into His promised hope?
