To Everything There is a Season . . . Part of the role of a priest is to encourage members of congregations to do things they have never considered doing before.
Emma has worshipped at St Andrew’s Church in the Parish of Kirby Bedon for well over 15 years and has never written a front page article for Eleven Says. I have therefore offered her the opportunity and she was delighted to accept. Enjoy! Both the words and image are totally hers.

John Shaw Emma’s Article "To every thing there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven". Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NKJV) When I was a child I remembered being haunted by the Mary Hopkin song "Turn, Turn, Turn". Her gentle voice and the words of wisdom struck a chord with me because I was a child of the countryside and the changing seasons were endlessly fascinating to me. When I learned that the words were inspired by the above passage from Ecclesiastes, attributed to King Solomon, it drove me to read the rest of his wisdom and there I discovered that truth about life, however ancient, is still truth. As we come to the end of a wonderful summer I am expecting the usual comments about how people are dreading the dark days of winter. I am always so saddened when I hear them as it reminds me that so many of us have lost our delight in the seasons. Harvest, once a season of celebration, relief and joy at provision, is distilled to a tractor blocking the road and pumpkins in the shops. Winter is no longer a time of long nights of sleep or stories round the fire when we rest from toil. It is an endless whinge about the weather; dread of travel disruption and short, sad days that we can't wait to be relieved of. It leads me to reflect on how distant we are from the lives we once lived and from the sense of everything unfolding in its time. Granted the modern life is full of convenience. Who wouldn't want heating? But does it come at a cost? Suddenly everything is always immediately accessible and we find ourselves in a world where there is no rest; no winter; no quiet, silent, empty days when our souls can lie fallow and our vitality is renewed. Is it any wonder we are all so tired all the time? In my own life I have recognised that if I am not careful I am longing for life's winters to be over. I want the dark to end.

I struggle with rest, with "down time". I fight to embrace being still when I know that everything in me needs to do just that. Then I am challenged by Solomon's words. "To everything there is a season". Even we have seasons. Childhood moves to youth, which moves to productivity, which in turn moves to our middle age, where the task is to take stock, make the most of our time and prepare to leave this very short life, grateful for all we have seen and done...That is, if we are wise! Increasingly we resist the seasons. We move forward too quickly to the next phase (children to adults) or firmly stay where we are (refusing to accept old age and the inevitable loss of control it brings). I feel stressed just thinking about the striving involved! Is there another way? At the heart of our striving, it seems, is the inability to embrace the present and see that we can trust that whatever life and God give us are good for now, but may not always be so. Whilst letting go of something we love is painful, it is often necessary if we are to experience the next good thing...which may in fact be better. Change is always hard. It can feel frightening to move forward in life, but life is like the river I look at everyday: Always flowing to the sea. I don't know what this winter will bring, or even tomorrow, but I am excited to see what treasures of nature emerge around me. I am comforted that summer will come again, regardless of any efforts on my part. So as the seasons in nature and in my life unfold and I let go of one thing to embrace another: I must rest in today regardless of what it brings and with Solomon remember... Rev Chris Speaks Of Norwich Nautical Role The Rev Chris Ellis spoke with a nautical twist of “Messing about in boats” at the annual Men’s Breakfast in Alpington & Yelverton Village Hall on Saturday 29 October. Men from across the Bramerton Group of parishes had earlier tucked into a hearty cooked breakfast, prepared by John Everett and volunteers. Chris began with the 21st century demands of being a parish priest, serving 5 villages, two Diocesan roles and one at the Cathedral. This was 5 years ago until the Bishop of Norwich called Chris in and gave him “another hat” to wear – a naval officer cap as Chaplain of Norwich Sea Cadets. He was taken aback, not having previous naval nor waterways experience, other than three sea ferry trips. Despite this cultural shock, Chris joined the Norwich headquarters, a former Swedish gunboat. He told of the origins of the Sea Cadets, formed in 1854, as a cadet force by sailors returning from the Crimea War. Norwich cadets started in 1912. Cadets are welcome from 10 – 18 years old and can get involved in a wide range of activities. Chris said, “Cadets are sworn in and promise to serve the Queen and God, hence a need for a Chaplain.” Chris gained valuable knowledge and his sea legs at HMS Bristol in Portsmouth. Learning the language proved interesting, Chris continued, “As chaplain, you are the same role as the person you are speaking with, whether a new cadet or indeed an Admiral. Everyone salutes a chaplain, not the other way round. Saluting the cap badge is associated with saluting God.” He explained what the cadets are about, “Funded and governed by the Royal Navy, this is a place to learn to respect authority, be a team member and not to let the team down. The boys and girls, many coming from troubled backgrounds, respond to this and grow over the years. “I talk with the cadets, some 40 in Norwich, and staff, officers and commanding officer. To be there and serve when people need you is a great challenge and a great joy,” Chris concluded. Report and photo from Kevin Gotts

Norfolk County Council Mobile Library Service – dates for 2017
Do you know that the mobile library visits our area regularly, usually every 4th Monday. It’s a great chance for everyone to choose from a huge selection of books or you can order one that you especially want to read.
It will be a shame to loose this service, especially for those who are less able to get around or have no transport. It’s also a friendly meeting place for people on their own.
Oh! What a night!
The Surlingham WI organised a Cookery and Flower Arranging event in October and over 50 people turned up at Bramerton village hall to see popular chef, Lynton Johnson, at ‘work’, assisted by Audrey.
The evening ‘kicked off’ with a cup of freshly made vegetable soup handed out to everyone. Then a fresh mixed salad and delicious dressings, a pasta dish and a beef lasagne were offered as ’tasters’. There were 2 desserts, numerous types of breads and cheeses also available to taste. A variety of vegetables were on show which Lynton gave tips on how to prepare and cook to get the best out of them. Flower arranging tips then followed as Lynton
showed us how even the simplest of arrangements could brighten any occasion. These three beautiful arrangements were added to the many prizes in the raffle which rounded off this very entertaining and successful evening.
To start the New Year the WI has another open event, the ever popular Bingo Night! This will be held in Surlingham village hall on Friday 13th January and all are very welcome to join in the fun. Doors open at 6.30pm and it’s ‘eyes down’ at 7pm. Refreshments will be available and there will also be another big raffle. It’s always a ‘fun night’ and you can be sure of a warm welcome. “An Introduction to Art Appreciation” given by Fiona Fitzgerald, “I like it…I don’t like it.” This course will create a framework for thinking and talking about painting, sculpture, architecture and design. We will see whether the framework works for examining Contemporary Art as well.

Thurton Little Fish Matilda and Millie have joined us at Little Fish this term which is great news! We have also had a wonderful gift of 8 mini cushions for the children to sit on when it comes to story time. They are brilliant and the children love them. A big thank you to Dolly Howes for accepting the challenge of our request and for making them so beautifully. Little Fish meet at Thurton Village Hall (in the small carpeted committee room) at 10.30am on alternate Wednesday mornings during term time. On arrival the children choose a cuddly toy out of the bag and we have a short service specially designed for them with songs you can shake shakers to, a bible story and a prayer. Afterwards there's a drink and biscuit for everyone, toys to play with, chatting, sharing and colouring.

Thurton Explorers We are a smaller group this term, but have been very active as usual. In our craft times we have made a story picture for the church, flowers for the Harvest Festival Service and very artistic large stocking decorations for the Pre-School Christmas Bazaar. All 7 - 11 year olds are welcome to join Explorers. We meet on alternate Friday evenings (during term time) at the village hall from 7pm - 8.15pm.
Explorers have fun together - we play games, have a Bible story which everyone wants to act out, and end with art and craft activities.

WEA Loddon Branch - Spring programme 2017
If you took a time machine back 1,000 years to a period just before the Normans conquered England, you would scarcely understand what the people were saying, although their language could be described as an early form of English. That is not really surprising as all languages change and develop over time. The Loddon WEA Branch’s Spring talks are entitled ‘Language, Lore and Legend, the Story of English’ and will show how the English language has altered over the years, using stories, traditions and folklore to illustrate the process. There will also be a look to the future to imagine how English might change further. There will be nine talks, each of 1½ hours, given by Dr. Graham Platt, who is an English language specialist. As usual, the talks will be in the Jubilee Hall Clubroom on Monday afternoons, and will be reverting to the old time of 2 to 3.30. The first talk will be on January 16th but there will be a half-term break on February 13th. The fee for the course will be £47.50p but you may come to the first talk free of charge and pay only if you decide to continue. There is ample free parking. Everyone is welcome. The only requirement is that you should have an interest in the English language and be willing to engage with the unfamiliar!
Our next Open Meeting will be on March 28th, 2017. Mr John Nolan, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon from the NNUH, will be talking to us about hip replacement. Please come along and support us. The Late Summer Fete in September was a great success! We have produced a lovely calendar for 2017 featuring people’s favourite photographs as voted on the day of the fete. These will be on sale at the December Community Café on 13th, the Adrian Bell afternoon on 4th December, or are available from Sarah Carter on 480555. Our thanks go to everyone who submitted photographs, everyone who helped with preparations, manned stalls or served refreshments on the day, for all donations of produce, cakes, etc. Our special thanks go to Rob Barnes for judging the photographic competition and to Jo Bissonnet for organising it and for having such an original idea in the first place! The Claxton & Carleton St Peter Community Café (held every second Tuesday of every month) continues to go from strength to strength. We were delighted to donate our entire takings of £73.00 from the October Café to Macmillan Cancer Care. Tuesday 13th December from 10am will be our Christmas Café. Not only will we be serving our usual selection of cakes and savouries with an added seasonal twist, but will be extending the Café’s hours to include soup and rolls, so people can linger over lunchtime if they wish. Then on January 10th 2017 from 10am – 12.00 we will be celebrating the Community Café’s first birthday, so look out for some extra features then!

Village Hall Makeover The village hall in Kirby Bedon has recently been the subject of much work to restore it to its former glory. After some professional refurbishment taking place over the summer, including new roof work, roof and wall insulation, internal plaster and plasterboard and skirting boards in the main hall, it just needed the finishing touches, namely painting. Quite a daunting task in not a small room but one undertaken by some of the villagers over a wet weekend in September. Led by three generations of the Cane family, and with Tim, Chairman of the Parish Council, the makeover was complete by tea time on the Sunday.
Gerald Chilvers, a demon with an extended roller who has lived in Kirby Bedon all his life, said he has never seen the hall look so smart. The walls have been painted a lovely warm Jersey Cream colour.
Those involved are now thinking the kitchen and toilets could do with attention, watch this space! Should anyone wish to hire our newly decorated hall they can do so by contacting Mrs Jill Watson on 01508 494221.

Kirby Kids’ Reunion Update
Once again we had a lovely happy evening and many child-hood memories were recalled. We had a lovely buffet thanks to all of you who brought lots of food items. Thanks also to the girls in the kitchen for making all the tea and coffee, and to Harry for topping up our cups all evening.
There was the usual raffle and tombola and we were able to send £148 to Help For Heroes.
We look forward to seeing you all again next year on the last Saturday of the month, 30th September 2017.

News from Rockland St Mary with Hellington Parish Council Rockland St Mary with Hellington Parish Council meets at the Parish Room on the second Monday of each month (except August) at 7.30pm. Any members of the public are more than welcome to come along and see what is happening in our villages. Recent developments include:
♦ Setting up a community speed watch team in Rockland St Mary. This has proved to be very productive. During the first four weeks forty-eight vehicles were registered as exceeding the speed limit. We currently have ten volunteers but the co-ordinator, Monica Armstrong, would love to recruit some more people. Please contact Monica if you would like further information, tel: 01508 537026 or email [email protected]. This is a very important initiative aiming to make the village safer for everyone.
♦ The engagement of a self-employed village caretaker, Steve Gildersleeve. He has worked very hard over the last few months clearing public footpaths and maintaining them in an excellent condition, litter picking throughout the villages, cutting back hedges and much more.
♦ Installing additional dog “poo” bins in Rockland.
♦ Assisting Rockland St Mary with Hellington PCC in obtaining a District Councillor’s Ward Grant of £200.00 towards replacement gates and posts at Hellington Churchyard. The Parish Council will be considering awarding a grant adding to this sum.
♦ Ongoing work on Black Horse Dyke Car Park - a tremendous improvement already.
♦ Discussions regarding the future of Green Lane Playing Field. Further information will be given in future issues of the Eleven Says.
♦ A grant to Townlands and Roydon’s Trust of £348.89 to cover the insurance premium for the Parish Room.
♦ A further grant of £500 to cover the refurbishment of the Parish Room kitchen.
♦ A grant to the Poors Trust of £210 towards the hiring of a skip to clear debris from the allotments.
Next year the Parish Council will be holding a floral display competition. Further details will be in the next Edition of Eleven Says. In September Martin Stedman resigned from the Parish Council. He had served as Chair of the Council and also Chair of the Rockland Broad Management Committee. Many thanks to Martin for his substantial contribution which has been much appreciated. Thurton Tea Afternoon The next Thurton Tea Afternoon is on Monday 23rd January, 2 - 4.30pm at Ashby and Thurton Village Hall. If you are thinking of coming for the first time...do give us a try... we are there with the kettle on, there are home-made cakes to enjoy and people to chat with.
Younger families join us after school and we provide drawing and colouring activities for the children. There is no charge, but donations go towards covering our costs and any surplus is given to Thurton Church. We look forward to seeing you. Rockland St Mary 200 Club Thank you to all those people who have supported the 200 Club in our second year. We are very pleased that most people who bought tickets first time around have renewed their membership. It is also gratifying that we have some new subscribers as well. As a result, The 200 Club Committee has been able to donate £330 to the Friends of St Mary’s Church in Rockland and the same amount towards the ongoing refurbishment of the Parish Room in Rockland. In terms of the lottery itself, there will be a monthly prize of £50 over the next year, with two prizes being awarded in December.

Rockland St Mary - Black Horse Dyke Restoration Many of you may have noticed that Black Horse Dyke has had the scrub trees and undergrowth cleared as part of the tidy up of the area. There is much more to be done with new fencing and resurfacing of the car parking area. The work has been carried out by Mark Clayton and his sons, to whom we can say a big thank you! However before they could begin the removal of the bushes etc, they had to empty all the fly-tipped rubbish found in the water - a fridge, old bicycle, bags of clothing, cans, bottles, jam-jars, brick rubble and other building materials – you name it, it was there. 8 trailer loads of it!
Fly-tipping is not only disgustingly antisocial it is also illegal. The Parish Council will prosecute anyone found to be dumping things in the water and in the car park. If the clothing bank is full, do not leave bags of it in the car park. We hope we will have your co-operation. Please help us to keep our village tidy.

The Rook Ramble on 30th October had 47 people (including 2 children) walking the Surlingham and Rockland footpaths, sustained by hot drinks and delicious food provided at the Parish Rooms. It was a nice day, much enjoyed, so thanks and congratulations to the organisers. On All Soul’s Day we had a beautiful service at St. Mary’s remembering loved ones. We sang, listened, prayed and lit candles together. When we left, the candles were still shining bright in the darkness. Our Carol Service on 18th December at 4pm will be followed by refreshments (mince pie time!), everyone will be very welcome.

Pug Rescue On A146 If you were held up on your way to work or school on Monday 26th September about 8.30 am it was because two caring people stopped to rescue two small pug dogs that had got out of their garden in Bramerton and made for the busy A146 where it meets Slade Lane. Apparently they were running in and out of the traffic and might have been killed had not two people stopped the traffic and managed to catch the little rascals. They were then taken home and re united with their grateful owner. Thank you to those two kind women!

Thurton Primary School News Thurton Primary School life continues to be busy! The children have taken part in several sports events this term: they were victorious in the Cluster Football, and also the Cross Country Running, where several pupils qualified for the next round! Well done to all who represented Team Thurton! This year we have been running our usual wide variety of After School Clubs, but we are particularly excited about our newest club, Aem Hai Karate run by Sansei Dan Dean-Cockburn. The uptake for this club has been amazing and the children are thoroughly enjoying it, and getting really involved in the whole ethos of Karate, which is lovely to see! Our PTA have been very busy already raising funds for the children. The quiz night was particularly successful, and, as part of our drive this year to encourage children to a lifelong love of reading, we have started running Reading Cafes, with the help of the PTA. We are thrilled about how well these are going, and would like to thank all the parents who are giving up their free time to come in and share a book with the children. Village News Alpington & Bergh Apton Primary School news The Friends fundraising enhances the children’s experiences at school where the funding from local authority and diocese cannot quite stretch – providing for music lessons, funding towards school trips and travel, play equipment etc (etc etc!). We have a Facebook page (@fabaps) if you would like to see more of what we do. We hope you agree that the school is a credit to our villages. We enjoy a fantastic relationship with our local community, attending both Yelverton and Bergh Apton Churches for celebrations and festivals and inviting neighbours to join in our activities and fundraising events. Looking forward to 2017, we are working towards funding a major project; the resurfacing and line-painting of sports circuits and play areas on the playground. This will again improve what (aside from the churches) is the very attractive focal point of our villages. The Friends would like to take this opportunity to extend a big THANK YOU for all the support you give to our school activities and wish all our neighbours and friends of Friends a most enjoyable Christmas and Happy New Year!
Founder Inspires Filling Station Audience
Richard Fothergill, the Founder and Director of The Filling Station Trust spoke inspirationally at the October meeting of the Yare Valley Filling Station at the new venue in Bergh Apton, south of Norwich. He addressed an audience of over fifty interdenominational church members and guests. An ordained minister, Richard majored on “What God is doing across the Filling Station network”, started 10 years ago, which now has 85 different meetings across the UK and also some abroad. He spoke of God’s Holy Spirit operating within the network, which comes as a Comfort, illustrating this
with a story of a church minister who was close to giving up. After he attended a meeting he was so encouraged that he changed his mind, and six months later his church had expanded significantly. Richard gave examples of Healing by God in meetings. One was about a young mother who had not been in church for over 20 years. Being diagnosed with terminal liver cancer she spoke with her Christian neighbour who took her to a meeting. Three days later following prayer, she had further tests in hospital showing 99% reduction in cancer cells. Another was about a Scottish bus driver had been off work for over 9 months because of back injury. Hands were layed on his back on two occasions, and soon he miraculously threw away his stick and walked into a local church to tell joyfully of his healing and return to work. He then addressed the topic of Signs and Wonders. His example was of a couple in France who had been trying to sell their home for 2 years without success. Following prayer at a meeting, 3 days later a bid for the full amount was received and 2 months later they moved home. In contrast to many negative influences in the modern world, Richard said, “There is new confidence in the Church, and we have the answer, standing out as people who have something different, a light, drawing others to God.” Quoting Psalm 133.v1 “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity”, Richard told of Healing on the Streets (HOTS) initiatives where Christians from different backgrounds have found new unity and meet together regularly in public open spaces, offering prayer and ministry. This led him to speak about Spiritual Wisdom, where prayer is the number one priority and authority taken. Many Christians pray specifically for neighbours, friends and their communities. Richard concluded with ‘What’s Next?’ A prophesy from a believer in South Africa showed significance in the national flag of the UK where God will move the nation into greater things. “The Filling Station is now a major platform from which Jesus will work,” he confidently predicted. The addition of spices, suet and alcohol to meat came about because it was an alternative to salting and smoking in order to preserve the food.
