NFL

ARLINGTON, TEXAS Dak Prescottwas late.

His relatives, friends and highschool coach, who made thethree-hour drive west fromnorthern Louisiana, had justwatched him shred his secondNFL defense in as many weeks. They were waiting.

Prescott had just made NFLfans across the country onceagain wonder why he fell to thefourth round of the draft.

In the six drives in which heled the Dallas Cowboys oense inFriday night’s 41-14 dismantlingof the Miami Dolphins, the Cow-boys scored 34 points. He trend-ed on Twitter and made it lookeasy.

“I grew up a ’Boys fan,” Pres-cott told USA TODAY Sports onhis way out of AT&T Stadium.“I’m so happy to be doing this. I’mnot going to say it has been easy, because it hasn’t. I’m just trying, man. I’m trying to put in thatwork and ball out any chance Iget.”

Ball out, indeed.Prescott completed 12 of 15

passes for 199 yards and twotouchdowns. He added two rush-ing scores and 28 yards. It’s veryearly, but he’s looking like thesteal of the draft.

But how exactly did a quarter-back who played in a spread of-fense at Mississippi State, whorarely took a snap from undercenter, whose mechanics needed

work, become the hottest namein the NFL preseason?

Prescott thinks it’s simple: Hejust immersed himself in theplaybook and worked on hisweaknesses.

Throughout the pre-draftprocess, Prescott trained in Or-lando with private coach TomShaw, and every single snap, ev-ery single practice rep, every sin-gle drill he went through wasunder center. He fine-tuned hisfootwork. He molded his game tobecome more adaptable to a proscheme.

Dallas, for its part, has calledplays in Prescott’s two preseasongames that highlight hisstrengths.

Because of that he has flashedhis arm strength, pocket poise, rushing ability and accuracy.

“The oense we ran at Missis-sippi State was nothing short ofan NFL oense,” Prescott said.“The only thing that was dierentis that we didn’t go under center.I swear to you, in (pre-draft) vis-its, every play they showed me, Icould name it. We just called itsomething dierent. At anotherteam I visited, they ran the exactsame stu we ran.

“Knowledge-wise, I think I’mthe smartest quarterback thatcame in this class. I would love togo on the board and go head tohead with anybody else. That’show I feel. That’s how confident Iam.”

That confidence is somethinghis teammates — young and old— are noticing.

“Some guys, they just got it,”wide receiver Dez Bryant told

USA TODAY Sports in the lockerroom after the game.

“I’ll tell you this, man, rookie isjust a name they give you in theleague. You can either do it or youcan’t. The guy, like I said, is a stu-dent. Give it to him. You’ve justgot to give it to him. He wants tolearn and be good. He’s sitting be-hind a Hall of Famer. Give himhis credit.”

Starting quarterback Tony Ro-mo said after the game that Pres-cott reminded him of himselfback in the day.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, asked if Prescott had doneenough to claim the backup job, said he didn’t want to discussthat. Team owner Jerry Jonesand his son, executive vice presi-dent Stephen Jones, also de-flected.

The Cowboys are being coy. Af-ter toiling in backup quarterbackhell last season — Dallas went 1-11in games Romo sat out with twoseparate collarbone fractures —the Cowboys understand how im-portant the position is.

“I don’t see a veteran quarter-back on the scene or coming in,”Jerry Jones said Friday night dur-ing the team’s television broad-cast of the game, “as long as we’vegot the uptick arrow of DakPrescott.”

That was before Prescott lit upthe Dolphins. Imagine how Jonesmust feel now.

In two preseason games, Pres-cott has completed 81.5% of hispasses for 338 yards, four touch-downs and no picks. He has add-ed 41 rushing yards and tworushing scores. Nine of the 10

drives Prescott has played thispreseason have resulted in points. He has more total touchdowns(six) than incompletions (five).

But when Prescott plays first-team snaps in preseason games, the best oensive line in the NFLblocks for him. One of theleague’s most lethal wideouts(Bryant) catches his passes. Oneof the most dependable tight ends(Jason Witten) serves as his safe-ty valve.

These are optimal conditionsfor a rookie.

Prescott knows this. But hevows he’s still so far from wherehe wants to be. With his relativesand friends waiting outside, Pres-cott was asked a question: What’snext?

“More work,” he said, “buthopefully more of the same.”

TIM HEITMAN, USA TODAY SPORTS

“I think I’m the smartest quarterback that came in this class,” the Cowboys’ Dak Prescott says.

Rookie QB shines again, giving Dallashope Romo injury wouldn’t sink seasonLorenzo Reyes@LorenzoGReyesUSA TODAY Sports

ly staked a claim that Siemianshould be the starter.

But then Sanchez one-uppedhis competition. The first fumblecame after he used nifty footworkto escape pressure. He stepped upin the pocket, then BAM!

Fate would give him anotherchance after the 49ers promptlyturned the ball over in one snap.Yet three plays later Sanchez wasswallowed in the pocket ... andout popped the football.

“In a real game, maybe we justrun it and take the points. But go-ing into my eighth year, I knowbetter,” Sanchez said. “I have toget the ball out.”

It was another snapshot of theperception that has come to de-fine Sanchez. He can tease youwith his athleticism and moxieand then break your heart with amajor league gae. Before the

first fumble, he coolly led his unitdown the field and into scoringrange. Then he got careless. Heknew, too.

“I just squandered a great op-portunity to separate myself,” hesaid. “There’s no excuse for thatpoor, poor quarterback play.”

It has been Sanchez’s job tolose ever since Broncos architectJohn Elway dealt a seventh-round pick to the PhiladelphiaEagles last spring and laterwalked away from a trade for SanFrancisco’s Colin Kaepernick. That Siemian is in the mix under-scores the risk of expecting San-chez to overcome his history.

Siemian, a Northwestern prod-uct with a live but not consistent-ly accurate arm, was a seventh-rounder last year. But his poiseand consistency have impressedcamp observers. Saturday (10-for-14, 75 yards), his throws wereprimarily short and to the out-

side. He got rid of the ball quicklyand never took a sack.

Meanwhile, Sanchez (10-for-17,120 yards) was sacked three timesin addition to the fumbles.

All of which leaves Kubiak in aholding pattern, never mind theconventional NFL pattern of hav-ing starters in place by the thirdpreseason game. The Broncos

need that next exhibition, Satur-day against the Los AngelesRams, for further evaluation.

When someone asked abouthis timeline for a decision, Ku-biak said, “I foresee myself tryingto find a way to fix some mistakes.I’m going to take it a day at atime.”

But that marker might be fluid, depending on whether the errorscan be eradicated. Lynch, mean-while, is not schooled enough tobe the Week 1 starter. But staytuned — it’s a long season.

The Broncos were stung by in-consistent quarterbacking lastseason, when Peyton Manningstruggled and since-departedBrock Osweiler had his baptismby fire. Yet they won the crownanyway as the NFL’s best defensecarried the day, the C.J. Ander-son-Ronnie Hillman runninggame relieved pressure and Man-ning settled down during the

stretch run of his final season.Defense is obviously still the

ticket. The Broncos don’t need ajuggernaut oense, just a safeunit that can capitalize enough tocomplement Von Miller and Co.But the formula can’t include re-peatedly pushing that great de-fense into a corner with turn-overs.

That’s why Kubiak’s decisionultimately might hinge on whichquarterback can best protect thefootball. Sanchez’s experience isnothing to bank on when it iswrapped in giveaways.

“It’s dicult playing like crapon two plays and then ruining anopportunity,” Sanchez said.“That’s dicult.”

So is Kubiak’s dilemma.

Broncos QBs’ shaky play creates dilemma for coachv CONTINUED FROM 1C
