Keys to a Successful Advising Appointment
1) Schedule your advising appointment in advance At peak times of the year, it may be difficult to get an appointment with your academic
advisor at a moment’s notice.
You can schedule an appointment online, here:

2) Show up early or on-time for your advising appointment Call to cancel and/or reschedule your appointment well in advance if you are unable to
make it, so another student may take your appointment time.
3) Make sure you have your PID or Net ID Your PID is the “A” number provided to you from the registrar’s office. Your Net ID is your
email address without the “@msu.edu.” This will allow your advisor to access your records
during your appointment.
4) Bring a Pen/Pencil and paper or your Computer/Tablet to take notes Taking notes will help you think about what you are learning and help you to remember
details and deadlines.
5) Bring this book! I mean, look how amazing it is!
6) Prepare a selection of courses If you are preparing for enrollment, bring a list of courses that you would like to take and/or
think you may need for your degree or transfer plan. If you need help searching for classes

Certification for Elementary and Special Education
Elementary Education
The Elementary Education major prepares teachers who
have the knowledge and skills needed to teach all subjects in
kindergarten through fifth grade (K-5) and the depth to
teach a specific subject area in sixth through eighth grade (6-
8).
Certifications include:

Special Education majors complete requirements for
elementary teacher certification and a K-12 endorsement in
the special education area of learning disabilities. The
program places a high priority on developing the skills
teachers need to be effective in mainstream classrooms as
well as more traditional “self-contained” special education
classrooms.

What is a Major?
Michigan State University only certifies teachers for the State of Michigan. However, after getting certified in Michigan it is
possible to apply for certification in another state. For more information on certification out of state go to:

University Requirements
Writing, Rhetoric & American Culture (WRA)
WRA is the prefix for Writing, Rhetoric & American Culture. Students take WRA 101 to fulfill the first part (Tier 1) of MSU’s English/writing requirement:
WRA 101 (4 credits)
All students must complete a Tier II writing course as juniors or seniors. Education and Special Education majors will take TE 301 and TE 404 to satisfy the second writing requirement.
Integrative Studies in Arts and Humanities (IAH)
IAH is the prefix for the Integrative Studies courses in the Arts and Humanities. Students are required to pass two courses in the arts and humanities for a total of 8 credits.
IAH 201-210 (4 credits)
IAH 211 and higher (4 credits)
The completion of IAH 208, 209, 241A, 241C, 241D, 241E, or 241F may also satisfy the Planned Program requirement for Arts & Humanities.
Integrative Studies in Social Science (ISS)
ISS is the prefix for the Integrative Studies
courses in Social Science. Students are
required to pass two courses in the social
sciences for a total of 8 credits.
ISS 200-level (4 credits)
ISS 300-level (4 credits)
University Diversity Requirement
MSU undergraduates must complete courses in at least two of three diversity categories (“D”, “N” & “I”) as part of their IAH and/or ISS requirements. “N” – emphasizes national diversity; “I” – emphasizes international and multicultural diversity and “D” – emphasizes both national and international/ multicultural diversity.
Mathematics Requirement
Education and Special Education majors must complete the following classes (not including MTH 1825) to satisfy the university math requirement:
MTH 103 + MTH 201
Education and Special Education majors must also complete MTH 202 for degree requirements.
Students placing into MTH 1825 will need at least 123 credits to graduate. All other students require 120 credits to receive a Bachelor’s degree. Integrative Studies in Biological and Physical Sciences (ISB & ISP)
ISB is the prefix for the Integrative Studies courses in Biological Sciences, and ISP is the prefix for the Integrative Studies courses in Physical Sciences. Students are required to pass one course in biological sciences, one course in physical sciences, and one laboratory experience, taken concurrently with one of the courses for a total of 8 credits.

SPECIAL EDUCATION PRE–ADMISSION EXPERIENCE
FOR OBSERVATION OF AND/OR PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE WITH CHILDREN AND YOUTH WITH DISABILITIES
To be eligible for consideration for admission to the teacher certification program with a disciplinary major in special education, the student must also have completed one or two supervised pre-admission experiences totaling at least 42 hours in the area of emphasis that the student will select to meet the requirements for the bachelor’s degree. Prospective special
education students are strongly encouraged to talk with faculty in special education about the
potential value of sites for securing the required experience. Prospective applicants to the special education program must submit a form verifying completion of the experience. Current MSU students who apply in the fall have until the first week of spring semester in the same academic year to submit their forms. Transfer students must submit their forms at the time of matriculation at MSU. Although applicants to the special education major will not be ranked by their performance in the experience, only students who have completed the required experience will be considered for admission.
The purpose of a volunteer experience requirement is to offer students considering Teacher Education and a major in an emphasis area of Special Education an opportunity to visit, observe, and interact with children and youth who are disabled, in existing settings under the direction of an experienced teacher or supervisor. This opportunity may assist you in learning whether you might enjoy Special Education teaching and consultation; and provide you with a foundation for acquiring the knowledge and skills you will need if you are admitted to a Program.
You are encouraged to seek out and consider sites of various types in your home community for observation and gaining experience with children and youth with disabilities. Typically, local school districts and intermediate school districts maintain educational programs for pre- school and school-age students, where teachers certified in special education teach special needs students and collaborate with the children’s regular education teachers, parents, therapists, and other school personnel to plan and implement an effective education for the children. Other agencies, both public and private, also offer services to families and children with disabilities. These services range from providing evaluations and teaching physical, sensory, mental health, or educational needs, to opportunities for the use of leisure time, such as scouting, recreation, camps, after-school sports or art, music, or dance experiences. And there are more for you to discover! Typically, a search for a volunteer experience begins with the discovery of one resource, and leads to other resources which are recommended by your first contact - and so on - until you finally find yourself at a site that matches your goals! Your telephone directory, local school Director of Special Education, teacher, or parent of a child who is disabled, may help you to get started in finding volunteer experience. And, of course, MSU advisors in Teacher Education-Special Education will also be available to offer suggestions. You can complete the volunteer experience when Michigan State is on break and local schools and agencies are still in session, such as December after MSU final exams, during MSU's spring break, or the break in the summer. The volunteer experience can be divided between two settings, or you can complete it in a single setting. The minimum number of hours is 42.
When you have completed the experience, please complete (typed response preferred) and return the Student Reaction Form . A second form, The Supervisor Reaction Form, should be completed by your site supervisor and mailed to us under separate cover. Your response is an important part of your application for admission to the Special Education major, and will be placed in the application folder for review by the Special Education Admission Committee. Elementary Education Teachable Minors
Students must choose an elementary teaching major. Minors can be added to the major but they are
considered extra and optional. Students can apply to add optional minors on the Reply Form they submit after
being admitted to the Teacher Preparation Program. To become certified in the minor area, students must
complete all required coursework and pass the corresponding MTTC test.

Early Childhood & Special Education Minor Graduates are recognized as having expertise working with young children. These standards reflect the
knowledge and skills to teach children from birth to age 8 in general education settings, as well as significant
knowledge and skills for teaching infants and children with special needs. All students will gain practical
experience working with children by first observing, then planning activities, and finally culminating with a
semester of student teaching in the MSU Child Development Laboratories (CDLs). Students in the MSU
Elementary Education or Special Education Teacher Preparation Programs should contact an HDFS Academic
Advisor for adding the minor to their degree program.
The endorsement requires 26 credit hours and includes the following courses:

communities where resources and services are often limited. Through two years of focused
coursework and guided teaching experiences, UECP helps prepare educators who are uniquely

Application and Admissions to the Teacher Preparation Program
Eligibility: The undergraduate application process is intended for MSU undergraduates who (1) are
currently enrolled, (2) have reached at least sophomore status, (3) have a cumulative GPA of
at least 2.50 at the end of the application semester, (4) have the required scores on the new
SAT (administered March 5, 2016 and beyond) or an alternative pass measure (see next
page), (5) have successfully completed any developmental coursework required in
mathematics and writing (e.g., MTH 1825), and (6) wish to be considered for admission to the
program in the spring of the year they apply. Applicants should understand that meeting minimum requirements makes them eligible to
have their application considered. It does not guarantee admission. Each application
receives a thorough and holistic review by several evaluators. Essay fees and registration
fees for the SAT cannot be refunded to students who are not admitted to the program. Online Application:
The undergraduate application is only open during the fall semester. It will typically open the Tuesday after Labor Day and close the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
Timed and Proctored Essay:
As part of the online application, all applicants must write a timed and proctored essay at a
testing site on campus. At the end of the online application you will have an opportunity to
select a time and date to write the essay. Experience:
Students applying for admission to Special Education must complete a pre-admission
experience and submit documentation to 134 Erickson Hall before the end of the first week
of spring semester of the year they apply. No documentation required for Elementary or
Secondary but experience is helpful for the essay. UECP and GECP Students:
Students admitted to UECP and GECP are required to meet all admission requirements.
However, they are not required to complete the entire application for admission to the

Test Scores Required for Admission
The New SAT
Official SAT scores are required for admission to MSU’s Teacher Preparation Program. The
Michigan Department of Education (MDE) requires teacher candidates to have the following
SAT scores:
Evidence-Based Reading and Writing: 480 (or above) Mathematics: 530 (or above)
If you have already taken the new SAT (administered March 5, 2016 and beyond) and your scores meet or exceed those levels, you have met MDE’s “basic skills” requirement. If you have already taken the SAT and your scores do not meet or exceed those levels, you may take the test again and have official scores sent to MSU. If you have taken the SAT more than once, we will use your best score in each subarea (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Mathematics) across multiple test dates. Please note: Scores from SATs taken before March 5, 2016 will not be considered.
Alternatives to the SAT
Applicants may also use scores from the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Professional Readiness Exam (PRE) and ACT scores (see below) from tests taken before September 23rd, 2017. Applicants may pass all three PRE subtests (Reading, Mathematics, and Writing), or they may combine passing scores from the SAT, ACT, PRE, and MTTC Basic Skills Test until October 1, 2025.
