ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

From The Desk of Mr. Josh MatzPrincipal at Lakota Elementary

Spring has always been a time where nature is able to show off its exciting colors. The same applies to the students at Lakota Elementary as their teachers apply that excitement to classroom projects. Several windowsills are decorated with emerging plants and some classes have taken advantage of the warmth to do hands-on science or math projects outside. Others were able to show off their achievements at the Fine Arts Festival or through a well-rehearsed music program for their parents. All students, however, will have an opportunity to make us proud of their efforts on the 2015 Ohio Achievement and/or Diagnostic tests as they exhibit their learning over the past year. Spring truly is a time of great optimism and anticipation for Mother Nature and for education.

In addition to the traditional learning at school, Lakota Elementary has also had the opportunity to celebrate and appreciate our local heroes. The First Annual ‘Heroes in Blue Day’ at the elementary gave students the opportunity to celebrate some of our com-munity’s first responders. Area firemen, police officers, and EMTs joined their student host for a lunch to honor and applaud their efforts in keeping us all safe. Through this event and others like it, students learn the importance of appreciating those local, and far too often unsung, heroes that are there for us and protect us every day.

I would like to again express my appreciation for the opportunity to serve the students of Lakota Local Schools. I welcome your calls and visits as we make this a successful year of learning and achievement.

WHAT IS WELLNESS?Submitted by Mrs. Beth Crawford, School Nurse

The term wellness is being used frequently these days, but what is wellness? The University of California Davis Student Affairs website, https://shcs.ucdavis.edu/wellness, provides a helpful definition and explanation of wellness.

Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life.

"...a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." - The World Health Organization.

"a conscious, self-directed and evolving pro-cess of achieving full potential." - The National Wellness Institute

Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth.

Why Wellness MattersMaintaining an optimal level of wellness

is absolutely crucial to live a higher quality life. Wellness matters. Wellness matters because everything we do and every emotion we feel relates to our well-being. In turn, our well-being directly affects our actions and emotions. It’s an ongoing circle. Therefore, it is important for everyone to achieve optimal wellness in order to subdue stress, reduce the risk of illness and ensure positive interactions.

RECYCLING PROGRAM - Keep Our Earth CleanMrs. Jennifer Sherman, who works with the Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Joint Solid

Waste Management District, visited with 4th grade students in early April to talk about renewable & nonrenewable resources, and the importance of recycling to help keep our environment clean. Students participated in an activity which required them to act as detectives using clues to determine which natural resources could be recycled to be used again to produce products.

RAIDER BIDDY SPORTS SEEKS SPONSORSRaider Biddy Sports is seeking financial support for their upcoming 2015-2016 season.

Raider Biddy Sports teams consists of students from the Lakota School district. We are a separate entity from Lakota Local Schools. Because of this we receive no government funding and must raise all of our funds from businesses and individuals. Our main expense is Liability Insurance that our organization must purchase in order for our athletes to play. Our goal is to generate $3000 to pay for this yearly insurance premium.

The Raider Biddy Sports program offers many different opportunities for students to play a sport of their choosing. The sports we offer are: Cheerleading, Football, Cross Country, Girls and Boys Basketball and Wrestling. We have many volunteer coaches who have com-mitted their own time, money, and efforts to this program and will help in educating our children to become self-disciplined healthy athletes, responsible siblings, and most of all respected individuals within our community. This will also keep our kids in after school activities that are productive for their growth in both their bodies and minds.

We are working extremely hard in raising funds for our biddy programs. Raider Biddy Sports is depending on your assistance and generosity. Be assured that your contribution will be put to good use. Any company that contributes towards our goal will have their name listed on our banner(s) that will be on display at all of our home football games, home basketball games, home cross country meets, and any tournaments that the biddy program will host. Your name will also be posted on our Facebook page. We are a 501c3 organization (Tax ID # 34-1744822). Therefore, all the money your company gives us towards our goal will qualify as a business tax deduction.

Please check which amount you will be contributing and include the business name for the banner.
