Work around ‘kindness to others’ is noticeable on many levels throughout the school. Ms. Foy, Mrs. Mann and Ms. Ingham are also doing thoughtful and kindhearted work with the ‘Have a Heart’ club. During the month of February, ‘Have a Heart’ club students presented a kindness challenge each day to the students and staff at Montecito, such as ‘asking someone to play with you’, ‘saying hello to someone new’ and ‘helping someone with work’. Students in this club also had a special opportunity to join five other Burnaby schools to spread kindness at Metrotown on Feb. 26 th . They sang ‘This is Us’ together and then thanks to Metropolis, each child had $10 each to show kindness to others such as buying someone coffee or lunch or buying a small item such as a stuffed animal then giving it to someone. We were thankful that our trustee, Jen Mezei, also joined us for this special event! We also celebrated pink shirt day as a school on Wednesday, Feb. 26 th to stand up against bullying behaviour and show kindness and respect for everyone. Division 11 students have also been working hard to fill people’s buckets with compliments and kind words! In showing kindness through compliments, I would like to thank Mr. Stefanek and our three volunteer coaches Luke, Tristan and Nikhil as well as Mr. Houghland for their dedication to coaching the school basketball teams this past term. The kids enjoyed playing and developed their teamwork and basketball skills throughout the season. At Montecito, we are very fortunate to have so many staff members dedicate before and after school time, as well as recess time and lunch hours, to connect with children, encourage kids, and help them learn skills in a variety of areas such as through coaching, knitting club, choir, intramurals, reading in the library, and Student Council. We are also incredibly lucky to have such dedicated and giving parents who help in classrooms, organize and run fun school events such as the recent Family Games Night and Book Fair, volunteer for clubs and fieldtrips, coach Odyssey teams, and run the weekly hot lunch program, treat days and the fruit and veggie program to name just a few ways. We also have an incredibly dedicated and caring PAC executive who work tirelessly to support the students and staff at Montecito. Lastly, we thank all of the parents who truly work with us as partners in their child’s learning. We truly have a very special and caring community at Montecito! Respectfully, Mrs. Heather Kimmie – Principal

SCHOOL MOTTO: Kindness to Ourselves, Kindness to Others and Kindness to This Place

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE February is a month filled with activities surrounding friendship and care toward each other. It has been wonderful to hear and observe many of our students playing inclusively, working collaboratively, and using kind words and gestures with one another.

26th. 26th to stand up against bullying behaviour and show kindness and respect for everyone.

WINTER POEMS FROM MRS. LEROUX AND MRS. MANNERS GRADE 2/3 CLASS

POEM WRITING BY ELENA (KINDERGARTEN) FROM MRS. CHIN’S CLASS

PREPARING FOR SEPTEMBER

If you know that you will be leaving the school at the end of this school year, please contact the office by emailing our school secretary Mrs. Nickell at [email protected] or calling 604-296-9023.

COLD & FLU SEASON:

For the protection of your child, as well as other children, keep your child home if he/she:

• has a fever • is too sick to take part in all normal school activities • has a suspected or known communicable disease (ie.

Strep throat, pink eye, chicken pox, or any other undiagnosed rash).

Keep them home until they are no longer infectious. Please let the school know your child’s symptoms and call the school absence line to report your child’s absence.

MEDICAL DANGER – NUT ALLERGIES Several of our students have a life-threatening allergy to all nuts. The only way to ensure a safe environment for these children is to try to make our school NUT-AWARE. To do this we need everyone’s co-operation. Please check the ingredients of all foods your children bring to school. In a classroom setting, cross-contamination is the greatest risk for this type of allergy. Cross-contamination is when a few crumbs from one child’s snack are dropped and then picked-up by an allergic child. Throughout the school you will see NUT AWARE signs. WE KINDLY REQUEST THAT YOU DO NOT SEND SNACKS CONTAINING NUTS. It is difficult at the best of times to get children to eat healthy snacks, however, we hope you will appreciate the seriousness of this condition and that you will assist us at the school in our efforts to create as safe an environment as possible. With your cooperation we can minimize the risk of an allergic reaction.

DROP OFF & PICK-UP OF STUDENTS Just a friendly reminder to parents that our

staff parking lot should NOT be used for DROP OFF or PICK UP of students at any time. Please respect the NO PARKING signs placed

at the entrance to the staff parking area.

THIS MAKES US PROUD Congratulations to Ranem A., Natasha P., and Mimi D. and for winning spots to represent Montecito at the Burnaby School District’s Grade 7 Public Speaking Challenge Zone Finals. All students in Divisions 1, 2 and 3 presented speeches in class on the topic, ‘The greatest life lesson I have learned so far is….’. Two Grade 7 nominees from each class were chosen to present to judges and a larger audience on Feb. 12th. All of the nominees did a great job and we were very proud of their bravery and confidence in publicly speaking to the school audience. Based on the criteria in the areas of content, style, form, and delivery, Ranem, Natasha, and Mimi came out on top. They all represented Montecito exceptionally well at the Zone Finals last week!

We are proud to have eight high quality pieces of writing submitted to the Burnaby School District’s WORDS Writing Contest. Their writing will now be reviewed by a district panel and we are hopeful that at least some of the selections will be chosen for publication in the District’s WORDS Anthology. A special congratulations to the following authors: Ranem A. (2 entries), Tyler C., Brooklyn B., Markus D., Cheryl T., Hannah G., and Emma T. Below is one of the selections submitted:

Dreams are not a Reality As I sit in a quiet little space, Imagination is the safest place. In a world where there's a smile on every face, And being different is a trait to embrace. Walking by tall trees, And traveling overseas, Healthy plants and clean water are what everyone sees. Diving and creating a splash, The colours of fish and coral clash, Replacing the sight of plastic and trash. Streets perfectly clean. Beautiful nature, blue and green, Making a stunning scene. Continuing a path and expanding my imagination. Talking to others and starting a conversation, Realizing they’re very kind and are taking my feelings into consideration. Touring the world to discover they don’t judge or discriminate. A place where in a peaceful mission, everyone is willing to participate. Human rights and kindness are their ways to communicate. Sadly, it's just a dream, not reality. Actually, we are having to suffer the consequences for someone else’s terrible mentality. We are in a constant cycle of hate. The truth is we get bullied for having a unique trait. All we can do is watch and wait, Or maybe hatred is our fate... Ranem A
