“To waste, to destroy our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to
increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity
which we ought by right to hand down to them amplified and developed.”

On March 27th, 2015 we celebrated the success of our Spelling Bee and Science Fair achievers.
Our Middle School English Teacher, Mr. James Finnan addressed our students and parents:
On behalf of the middle school, I would like to congratulate the winners and participants of this
year's Spelling Bee and Science Fair.
In this country, some families obsess over their child's participation in the Script's National
Spelling Bee, an annual event that is nationally televised. Highlights are even shown on ESPN.
Now, our local and subsequent regional Spelling Bees demanded no such spectacle. But
regardless, our students demonstrated great poise and courage knowing that they had to speak
and perform in front of many. So even though you may not see any Andalusia School students on
television during this year's Script's National Spelling Bee, they are developing the skills
necessary to speak in front of audiences and judges and boards rooms, and so they should be
praised for the aforementioned courage they've shown.
I would also like to commend students for their participation in this year's Science Fair. Through
hard work and a hunger for scientific inquiry, these students showed a willingness to work
together to solve problems. Yes, they learned how to demonstrate the scientific process, but they
also about themselves. They learned how to be leaders and manage other individuals. They
learned how to fulfill important roles and be relied upon. They learned how to work
independently--and with a deadline--to complete a collective task. My hope is that students apply
this knowledge to elementary school, middle school, high school, and beyond. Thereby they will
continue to grow both as individuals and as participants in this great society. We should all be
very proud.
Thank you to all volunteers, teachers, parents, and anyone else who helped conduct the Spelling
Bee and Science Fair, especially elementary school for their fundamental and critical role in
organizing these events. Thank you very much!

April’s Book of the Month:
The Curious Garden by Peter Brown is an environmentally friendly book about a young boy,
Liam, who finds a way to change his factory ridden city into a wonderfully lush green place.
This is a great way to teach our children about being environmentally friendly and how it really
affects our living.

Grade 5 Informative Writing: Maya Ruins is a beautiful place to visit. There are many
amazing characteristics in it. There are also many ancient items that are very old and have been
there for many centuries.
Let’s start out with the structure of the pyramids. The structure of the pyramids is a huge part of
their characteristics. In the text the author states “They all have a stepped shape.” This shows us
that they are all different and unique. Also, you don't have to look at the same shaped pyramids
over and over again. This will make your trip even more fun than it already is.
The size of the pyramids is also a big part of how the pyramid is constructed. In Elmirador the
platforms are huge! In the text the author states that “The size of the platforms is the size of
eighteen football fields.” That is really big. Also, the author says that the pyramid, Le Danta is
“one of the tallest structures in the word” and that “La Danta takes more space than Egypt's
largest pyramid”. This shows us that the pyramids are very huge, which is a big part of how
much you will be able to enjoy your visit.
These characteristics are a big part of your trip. However, the most important part is the wildlife.
In Mayas Ruins there are many wild animals. For example, howler monkeys and at least 183
species of birds are found in Mayas Ruins.
After all, Mayas Tikal is an amazingly fun, and educational place to visit! I really recommend
going. Enjoy your trip!

Grade 3 Comparative Essay
“Yonder Mountain, A Cherokee Legend”
In the story “Yonder Mountain, A Cherokee Legend,” there are three main characters
and an old man named Chief Sky. Chief Sky is looking for someone that can be the leader of his
tribe because he is getting too old. So Chief Sky told three young men, Black Bear, Grey Wolf,
and Soaring Eagle to bring something back from the top of Yonder Mountain. The three main
characters are similar and different, and I am going to discuss their actions in the story.
The first man to try to go up the mountain was Black Bear. He climbed to the side of the
mountain and rested. Also, he found shining stones before he shut his eyes. Finally, he brought
back the stones to his tribe. He said that they could trade the stones for food, and they will never
starve again.
The second character to attempt to go up Yonder Mountain is Wolf. He climbed to the middle of
the mountain. Also, he rested on a rock. Before he could shut his eyes he saw herbs. Finally, he
went back to the tribe, the tribe clapped. He spread the herbs in front of Chief Sky’s feet and said
that they could use the herbs to heal his tribe and they will never get sick again.
Soaring Eagle actually made it to the top of the mountain. The tribe waited 7 days for Soaring
Eagle. He came back with nothing but bleeding feet and a story. After he told the story, Sky put
his coat around Soaring Eagle.
Soaring Eagle shows he is more caring that the others because he doesn't only care
about his tribe, he cares about other tribes too. Two details to support this is he went to save
some people from another tribe. The second detail is that he is caring, loving, and he will never
give on people who are in need of help.
The Chief chose Soaring Eagle as the new chief over Black Bear and Grey Wolf because Soaring
Eagle listens carefully and actually completes his missions. He is kind, and doesn't only care
about himself; he cares about other tribes and people. That is why Chief Sky chose Soaring
Eagle as the new Chief.

Prompt: If the Three Bears had not come home, how do you think the story would have
ended?
Goldilocks would have slept for 3 hours. When she woke up, she would have cut up their
clothes. After that, Goldilocks would leave. Then, the three bears would come home and they
would call the police.

Grade 4 Earth Day Piece
Dear respected school mates,
Many animals are in danger and I think we can help and stand up. Plastic trash is causing big
problems for the world’s oceans, and it is misunderstood as food to animals. I’m very worried.
Furthermore, animals are being killed for clothes, food and more things. Many animals are
becoming extinct even this second because of humans. Humans are destroying their habitats.
That’s not all; there is danger ahead because pollution is hurting the Great Barrier Reef.
Australia’s government is fighting back though. They sent back a ship dumping materials in the
marine park and hunting is now illegal to protect the endangered animals. Moreover, most of the
turtles that wash up in Cape Cod are in danger and people are lending a hand to help the turtles.
Usually, volunteers receive the reptiles and take them to a nearby aquarium for medical care.
Their goal is to get the turtles healthy and to set them free. I feel that although all these species
are in danger, I believe we can help stop it from spreading and by giving a helping hand.
Sincerely,
Kiran

Circus Time
Acrobats flip around in the air,
Clowns toss around a chair.
Jugglers are amazing with their hands,
There might even be marching bands!
Magicians play with swords and fire.
Look at those clowns walk that wire!
Children eat lots of popcorn,
That clown car has a loud horn!
Monkeys take an elephant ride,
Everyone stares with eyes opened wide!

Spring Things
Monkey bars, slides and swings,
Day at the neighborhood park.
Flowers, bees, and squirrels,
A day of planting with my Mom.
Watermelons, strawberries, and pineapples,
A day of shopping for my favorite Spring fruits.
Chicken legs, corns, and steaks,
A day of a barbeque feast.
Autumn, Summer, and Winter,
No, No, No! A wonderful day of Spring.

Balloons
They sit in a colorful bunch,
Over the people having outdoor lunch.
They sway and play in the calm breeze,
They seem to enjoy the view with ease.
Held together by colorful strings,
Dancing around as a street musician sings.
I wonder how it feels to sit up that high,
In a world of balloon filled sky!

Spring Rain
Flowers seem to be glowing,
Their colors are brilliant as the bright sun!
It looks like a thunderstorm is coming,
The flowers might not be able to have as much fun.
Spit, spat, the sound of heavy rainfall,
Boom! Boom! Roars the thunder.
Go away! The flowers seem to call,
When will it end they seem to wonder.
Finally, they see the rainbow,
And, the butterflies start to play.
The flowers seem to put on a show,
And, looks like the sun is here to stay.
