Elijah lived during a time when it was extremely unpopular to worship and obey God. However, Elijah didn’t let peer pressure keep him from delivering God’s message of truth and he experienced God’s protection and blessings because of his obedience.

In this series, we will see that Elijah, a prophet of God, stood up to the evil ruler Ahab. And even though Elijah had times of trouble, God protected him and used him to lead the nation of Israel away from idol worship. We have much to learn from him in regards to prayer, worship, faith, and obedience.

Week 6: July 9-13 Don’t Bypass God

After Ahab was killed, his son Ahaziah became king over of Israel. Not long after, King Ahaziah had an accident. How did he respond? Well, as it turned out, just like his father. He did not think of God first, but of the false god, Baal. Through his encounter with Elijah, we see that bypassing God is foolish, negotiating with God is useless and living without God is fruitless. Day 1: Read 1 Kings 22:37-40 and 1 Kings 22:51-53 What happened to King Ahab? Does this sound familiar? [Hint: Elijah told Ahab this would happen, remember?] What kind of king was Ahaziah? Why?

Day 2: Read 2 Kings 1:1-8 What did Ahaziah do that was out of line with God’s commands? Why did this anger God? When have you asked someone for advice or what to do instead of asking God? Why is it best to go to God first?

Day 3: Read 2 Kings 1:9-17 How do you think the king felt about the message from God? Why was Elijah afraid to go? What did it take for Elijah to finally agree to go to the king? What happened?

Day 4: Read Psalm 123:1-2 What do you learn about where to turn when you need help from these verses? How will you keep your eyes on Jesus and not on others this week? What difference may that make for you?

Day 5: Read 2 Kings 2:1-12 God told Elijah to make Elisha his assistant. Based on this story, how did the men get along? Why do you think Elisha repeats “I will never leave you?” How did Elijah get to heaven to be with the Lord? Elijah always turned to God for help, he obeyed all that God told him, and he never worshipped false gods. It seems that God honored Elijah and sent a chariot to pick him up! Pretty cool, huh? Weekly Faith 5 Blessing: May you always lift your eyes to the

Lord first.

Week 5: July 2-6 Rely on God Not Yourself

When we sit on the throne of our hearts and act selfishly, we end up trying to get our way, we turn to others instead of God for advice, and as a result our life is not filled with peace and joy. When the Lord sits on the throne of our hearts, we see our selfish ways and our sin, and we make the changes we need to make. Then we experience God’s mercy, love, peace and joy. Day 1: Read 1 Kings 21:1-6 What did King Ahab want and why? Why didn’t he get it? How did he react? When have you been so upset that you didn’t even want to eat because you didn’t get what you wanted?

Day 2: Read 1 Kings 21:7-16 How did Queen Jezebel react to Ahab? What did she do for him? How did he react? What is the worst thing you did in order to get your way?

Day 3: Read 1 Kings 21:17-23 What two things did God call Ahab out on and what was the consequence for his actions? Why did God hold Ahab responsible— didn’t Jezebel do the bad things? Day 4: Read 1 Kings 21:25-29 What was the worst thing Ahab did? How did Ahab respond to Elijah’s message from God? How do you feel about God’s response? Who does God have mercy on?

Day 5: Read James 4:1-3 Why do people fight and quarrel? Why do people not get what they want? What would be a wrong reason for wanting something and what is a good reason? Weekly Faith 5 Blessing: May God be enthroned on your heart.

Series: Elijah

Week 1: June 4-8 Rely on God’s Abundance

This week read these three stories in The Beginner’s Bible with your child and use them to talk about how God provides for our needs. God sent ravens to feed Elijah, and sent manna for the Israelites. Jesus provides food for 5000 people on just a small amount of bread and fish! We rely on God to provide for us, too.

Week 2: June 11– 15 Rely on the One True God

This week read these three stories with your child and use them to teach that God wants us to rely on Him alone. In the Ten Commandments God says we are to worship Him only, and we are not to have any idols. Explain that idols are anything that we trust in more than God, like money or other people.

Week 3: June 18-22 Pray Humble Prayers

This week read these three stories with your child and use them to explain how important it is for us to pray. When we pray, or talk with God, it shows that we love, trust, and rely on Him. He wants us to talk to Him about everything and ask Him anything. The servant prayed for God to show him Isaac’s wife, Elisha prayed for his friends, and Jonah prayed for God’s forgiveness. Explain why people often kneel when they pray as a sign of humility.

Week 4: June 25-29 Rely on God in Peaks & Valleys

This week read these three stories with your child and discuss how God is with us in both good times and in bad times. God was with the widow and her son when they ran out of food, and He was there with the woman who had no money. David wrote a song about how God is like a Shepherd who takes care of us in good times and in scary times. We can rely on God to be with us and care for us all the time!

Week 4: June 25-29 Rely on God in Peaks & Valleys

God’s servants can count on three things: there will be troubles in our life, we will be discouraged at times, and God will always be with us. Elijah had an amazing “mountain top” experience with God, then he fell into a time of fear and sadness, which we sometimes refer to as being in a “valley.” God is there to meet us in the valleys, offering us rest and hope through His gentle and loving voice.

Day 1: Read 1 Kings 19:1-4 How did Queen Jezebel react to what Elijah had done when he challenged the prophets of Baal? After all God did on the mountain, why do you think he ran away in fear? How long did he travel? What did Elijah pray when he went to the wilderness?

Day 2: Read 1 Kings 19:5-9a How did God take care of Elijah after he ran away from Jezebel? How long did it take Elijah to get to the cave? How does that compare to how long he traveled to the wilderness? When has God given you strength to do something difficult?

Day 3: Read 1 Kings 19:9b-18 What question did God ask Elijah twice? Do you think that was a strange question? Why? How did God choose to reveal Himself to Elijah? Why in this manner? Was Elijah really alone? When have you heard God whisper to you?

Day 4: Read Isaiah 40:28-31 What do you learn about God here? What does He give to us and when? When has God given you power or strength when you needed it?

Day 5: Read 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 How is God described here? Why does God comfort us? When have you offered comfort to someone? Weekly Faith 5 Blessing: May you trust in God and hear His

gentle whispers.

Week 3: June 18-22 Pray Humble Prayers

We learn from Elijah, a man just like us, that there are certain things that make prayers effective. We must pray in a humble manner that shows we know God is in charge and we are not. We must be specific with our prayers. For prayers to be effective we must also be persistent, which means we don’t give up. And we pray expecting God to answer us.

Day 1: Read 1 Kings 18:41-46 What did Elijah tell Ahab? Was there evidence of that happening? In what position did Elijah pray to God? Have you ever done that? How many times did Elijah pray for rain? What happened? How will you pray differently after reading this?

Day 2: Read James 5:13-15 When are we to pray according to these verses? What does it mean to pray in faith? What happens when we do?

Day 3: Read Hebrews 4:16 How are we to approach God, who is sitting on a throne in heaven, when we pray for help? Coming boldly to God’s throne means praying with complete confidence. What does God give us when we go to him that way? Do you need to pray more boldly to God?

Day 4: Read 1 John 5:14-15 When does God hear and answer our prayers? What kinds of things are we to ask God that please Him? What are the kinds of things that we may ask that wouldn’t please Him?

Day 5: Read Matthew 6:9-13 Jesus gave us a “model” or sample prayer. What kinds of things should we include in our prayers? If you don’t already know The Lord’s Prayer, take time this week to memorize it. Weekly Faith 5 Blessing: May your prayers show your faith in

God.

Week 5: July 2-6 Rely on God Not Yourself This week read these three stories with your child to show that it is important for us to not think we can do things all on our own and forget about God. The people of Babel forgot about God and thought they could do anything without Him, and God wasn’t happy about that. Saul started out as a good king, but then he forgot about God and so God made David the king instead. We see that the widow did rely on God and gave her last coin to the church instead of keeping it for herself. That’s what God wants!

Week 6: July 9-13 Don’t Bypass God

This week read these three stories with your child and explain that when we leave God out of our lives, things will not go well. God wants us to obey Him and when we don’t, we have consequences, like in the story of Noah. God loves us so much that He gives us rules to follow that will help us to have joy and peace. Some of the people didn’t trust God so He did not let them go into the good land He promised them. Elijah and Elisha both obeyed and trusted God, and he blessed them for it!

Series: Elijah

Week 1: June 4-8 Rely on God’s Abundance God led Elijah through some tough times where he

couldn’t depend on anything at all but God, and God alone. God sent him to a brook, and then dried up the brook so Elijah would leave and go to where God wanted him, so once again, He could perform a miracle and raise the dead back to life. God used the horrible things to shape him into a true man of God.

Day 1: Read 1 Kings 16:29–33 What kind of king was Ahab? What things did he do that made God angry? [Hint: Baal was a fake god and an Asherah pole was an idol.]

Day 2: Read 1 Kings 17:1–6 What news did Elijah give to Ahab? Was it good news or bad news? Why did God tell him to hide? How did God take care of Elijah? How has God taken care of you?

Day 3: Read 1 Kings 17:7–16 What two things did Elijah ask of the widow? Did she want to do both things? Why not? What did Elijah say that God would do if she trusted Elijah? Has God asked you to do something that seemed scary? How did it turn out?

Day 4: Read 1 Kings 17:17–24 What did the mother say that Elijah did? Did he really do that? Why do you think she said those things? When have you looked for someone to blame when things went bad? What do you think you should do instead?

Day 5: Read Luke 12:22-31 What does Jesus say about “worrying?” Why? What helps you to stop worrying? What do you think verse 31 means? How may you do that? Weekly Faith 5 Blessing: May you rely on God and know that

He will certainly care for you.

Week 2: June 11– 15 Rely on the One True God

Above anything else in our lives, God wants to have all of our hearts, our worship, our focus. Trouble comes into our lives when we worship anyone or anything but the one true God. True servants of God know how to devote themselves to God and what it costs for us to do so. Elijah proved to the people how pointless and foolish it was to worship and depend on anyone other than the true God.

Day 1: Read 1 Kings 18:1-2 What did God tell Elijah to say to King Ahab? How do you think Elijah felt about that? Why?

Day 2: Read 1 Kings 18:17-19 What did Ahab call Elijah? Why? How did Elijah answer him? What did Elijah say that he and his family had done? Why is disobeying God and turning to “false” gods (and we all do) so bad?

Day 3: Read 1 Kings 18:20-29 What did Elijah decide to do to show the people that relying on and worshipping false gods is foolish? How did their false god Baal respond? Why?! What do you think God was thinking during this time?

Day 4: Read 1 Kings 18:30-40 What did Elijah do to make the task He asked of God even more difficult? How did God respond to Elijah’s prayer? How did the people react to what God did?

Day 5: Read Jeremiah 10:9-10 How are idols described? What is said about people who worship them? What is said about God? What makes Him so different? What do you think “idols” are today? [Hint: people may not worship things made of wood or gold, but they do worship or honor things and people more than God…] Weekly Faith 5 Blessing: May you honor and worship God alone.
