saying is "magic is as r e ligiously spe cif ic as baking a pie".

People commonly ass ociat e wit chcr af t wit h t he r eligion of

Wicca. This is a misconcept ion. Wit chcr af t was ar ound

long bef ore Wicca, in f act , it was ar ound long bef ore any

maj or world r eligion. S o let ' s clear t hat ment alit y away

r ight now. Magic is appr opr iat e f or any r eligion.

How is t hat so?

All of magic is, as it s simples t , not hing more t han calling

on a highe r power -- any higher power -- whet he r God or

t he divine self . I t is like a prayer made of symbols and

mot ions, t he way dancing is like animat ed poet r y. Magic

can be a more emot ional expr es sion of one' s love f or

t heir God or of a per son' s goals.

I f ot her people' s opinions ar e what hold you back, j ustr emember t hat people ar e quick t o condemn what t hey

don' t under st and. Whe n people t hink of r it uals and spells,

it calls t o mind t he concept of devil wors hip cre at ed b y

t he Church. But t his was not always so. Ear ly Chr ist ians

per f ormed copt ic magic, books of t hes e r it uals and spells

st ill exist as evidence. I t was not unt il lat er t hat t he

Church changed it s mind and de cided t her e was no

compat ibilit y be t wee n magic and r eligion. Yet how is a

spell t hat dist inct ly dif f er ent t han a pr ayer ?

Magic can be , if you allow it , a compass on you journey t o

t he highe r goal of your r eligion. I t will he lp t o kee p you

heading in t he r ight direct ion and it will guide you back t o

The r e is a magical place f or ever yone. This is a place

wher e one f eels most comf ort able and believes t heir

magic is bes t worked. This may be wit hin t he home,

out door s, anywher e! Ther e ar e a f ew r equir ement s you

should kee p in mind when f inding your magical place :

1. I t should be s af e.

2. You must be able t o get pr ivacy at some point in your

magical place.

3. You need enough r oom t o be comf or t able and move

around.

Your f ir st st ep will be t o begin surveying your choices of

spot s. Some people may inst ant ly know wher e t he ir

magical place is. But if you ar e not one of t hose people, Iwill t ell you how t o f ind, bles s, and ut ilize your magical

place.

Wr it e down a list of places which ar e near by enough t o

visit of t en t hat you like and t hat f ulf ill t he t hr ee

r equir ement s f or a magical place . Visit each place and

medit at e t her e f or awhile, absor bing t he ener gies of

your s urr oundings. Cont emplat e whet he r you would f ee l

t r uly comf ort able working her e. You should f ee l a senseof secur it y and f r eedom.

Once you f ind your place , you should b egin t o pre pare it

f or magic. You' ll need a place t o st ore magical supplies . I f

your s pot is indoor s, t his is e asy. A box under a be d or in

a close t will ser ve nicely as a s upply keeper . You can

easily ar r ange jar s and bags of her bs, st ones, books,

candles and ot her usef ul it ems in your box and even

I f your place is out door s, t he dr awback is t hat st orage

may be a lit t le more dif f icult . Her e is my solut ion, t hough

you are f r ee t o t hink up your own workar ound:

Purchas e a plast ic Tupper war e cont ainer lar ge enough f or

your it ems t hat you nee d at hand. Dig a hole near yourmagical place dee p and wide enough t o set t he cont ainer

in. Fill in t he ar ea ar ound it and put t he lid on t op of t he

cont ainer . Now, conceal t he lid -- t his can be done wit h a

layer of soil, sod, or e ven a pot t ed plant as long as you

can easily move t he conceal mean t o re ach your it ems. I f

you have s t epping st ones near your magical are a, you

could j ust place a large, f lat st epping st one over t he

st orage space inst ead of using t he lid! Her e is a dr awing

I f t his met hod is imposs ible, you can kee p it ems inside

your house and car r y t hem out whenever you need t o use

t hem. I t is j ust mor e convenient t o have your st or age

space handy.

S ince you ar e he r e t o lear n about magic, I can only

ass ume t he ques t ion must be on your mind... "if magic is

suppose dly compat ible wit h any re ligion, t hen what t he

heck is a ' wit ch' ?" Well, "wit ch" is a ver y br oad t er m. I t

is also a ver y misunder st ood t er m. Most people b elieve

t hat being a wit ch means you must be Wiccan or pagan.

This is ent ir ely unt r ue. Anyone of any r eligion can be a

wit ch. A wit ch can be a spe llcas t ing, or a he aler , or simply

a per son who see s and f ee ls t he magical ener gy in nat ure .

I cannot speak f or anyone b ut myself , so t his is just my

f ee lings about what it means t o be a wit ch.

I am proud t o be a wit ch. I t is a posit ive pat h f or me, it

f ills me wit h j oy and conf ide nce. To me, it means be ing

closer t o my sour ce. I t gives me a sense of dest iny

wit hout r obbing me of my sense of cont r ol. I have a

be t t er under st anding of h ow not hing can be achievedwit hout de dicat ion, and ever y act ion has a consequence.

Whet he r in applicat ion of magic of simply in ever yday

de cision making, t his t eache s me t o choose my moves

wisely. Magic is somet hing whichmust be use d well and in

mode r at ion. A mist ake in magic is like a mist ake in

anyt hing else in r eal lif e. A les son is lear ned. A wit ch may

accept t he less on, or r epeat t he mist ake and lear n it all

over again.

But , most of all, being a wit ch is about r emembe r ing t hat

you are a piece of God. What ever God/ des s you be lieve

in, you ar e a par t of t heir glory, a single be am of t heir

inf init e light . You do not have t o submit t o t he dire ct ion

t he cur r ent is car r ying. You have t he divine inside you,

Place your f ir st st one in t he nor t h. Walking clockwise ,

place t he second st one in t he east , t hen sout h, the n west .

t ake a handf ul of salt and walk clockwise (beginning at

Cont inue t o allow t he e lement al ener gy t o flow int o t he ar ea unt il a f ee ling of peace c omes

over you. I t is done!

Close t he circle and r et urn t he e lement t o nat ure. (Not e: don' t even blow a candle out!

Pinch it or ex t inguish it wit h a bit of wat er .) Have an aft er -r it ual meal of cake s and wine

(or br ead and j uice).

Now visualize a br ight r ed f ir e s urr ounding your

You can visualize t he ener gy be ing r eleas ed in t he

dire ct ion of t he goal while s aying an af f ir mat ion or ch ant .

For inst ance, if we use t he pr evious e xample f or

incr easing pass ion in a r e lat ionship, you could visualize you

and your par t ner being romant ic t oget her , and t hen say in

a commanding voice an af f ir mat ion such as "The e t er nal

power of f ir e br ings us pass ion". I nhale, and f ee l t he

exhale.

moder at e t he amount of ener gy you use . You can

consider easiest .

Once you have r eache d t he s t ep of visualizing your se lf as

place your hands in f r ont of your che st wit h all t he
