examplesof19thandearly20thcenturyarchitecture.ThebuildingsalongMainStreet
comprisetheareaforouranalysisandrecommendations.
Someoriginalstorefrontshavebeenlosttolateralterations.Inaddition,severaloriginal
storefrontsremainalthoughtheyareinpoorcondition.Fieldobservationsindicatethat
muchoftheoriginalmaterialsmaybesalvageable,particularlyinfourofthebuildings
includedinthefollowingsectiononarchitecturalrecommendations.Also,asiscommon
inmanysmalltowns,demolitionhastakenitstoll.Somenewconstructionfromthemid-
TwentiethCenturyhasreplacedoriginalbuildingstock.Careful
considerationshouldbegiventorespectdefiningarchitectural
features,preservingremaininghistoriccharacterandtothe
replacementofobtrusiveelements.
Historicstructurescreatethecharacterofatownand
buildingownershipcomeswithitsownuniqueissues.The
recommendationsonthefollowingpagesrelatetothe
commonproblemsofhistoricbuildingsandsuggest
enhancementstothelongevityofthesestructures.These
recommendationsprovidebasicinformationtorestoreand
maintainastableandweather-tightstructure.
Thefollowingpagesillustrateseverallocalbuildingsandsuggestrestorationworkthatwill
improvetheoverallcharacterofthedowntown.
FacadesBrickisthepredominatebuildingmaterialin
downtownKewanna.Throughtimemortar
jointsdeteriorate,whichcanleadtowater
infiltrationcausingexteriorandpotentialinterior
damage.Stressesasaresultofwaterinfiltration
anddeteriorationofstructuralmembers,
unusualloading,orexpansionandcontraction
ofbuildingcomponentssuchasrustingsteel
lintels,oftencausestep-crackingalongmasonry
joints,bulgingofwallsurfaces,andpotentialfailure.Abrasivecleaningmethodssuchas
sandblastingremovetheprotectivesurfacefromthebrick,givingrisetodeteriorationof
thebrickunitsthemselves.
Inspectionandrepairofmortarjointsshouldbeundertakenannually.Whenrepointing
masonryjoints,careshouldbetakentousemortarofasimilarcomposition,color,texture
andraketomatchexistingfeatures.Whencleaningisrequired,non-abrasivemethodswill

WindowsHistoricwindowunitsoftenbecomedeterioratedordamagedthroughexposuretothe
elementsanduseovertime.Theunitscanbecomevictimsofawell-intentionedowner
tryingtomodernizeorbecomeenergy-consciousbyusingsmallreplacementwindows
andinfillingthebalanceofamasonryopening.Theaestheticsofthebuildingbecome
compromisedwhenreplacementwindowunitsareofincompatiblematerialsandstyle
therebyrobbingthefaçadeofhistoricprofilesoftheoriginalunits.Additionally,periodic
inspectionofsteellintelssupportingthestructureabovethewindowisrequiredtoensure
theyremainpaintedandfreeofrust.
Woodwindowsashandframesneedtobeinspectedyearly
fordeterioratingcomponentsandpeelingpaint.Whenthe
paintfinishbeginstofailitshouldbescraped,sandedand
painted.Caulkjointsbetweenthewoodframeandthe
adjacentmasonryneedtobeinspectedandre-caulked

direction.Buildingsignagewithintheprojectboundariesisoftenabsent,lackscreativity,
provideslittlevisualenticement,and/orcontributestovisual“clutter.”Implementationof
signguidelineswithinthedowntownshouldbeencouraged.Awelldesignedsignalong
withexternallightingprovidesaninvitationtoenterintoaretailestablishment,promote
aparticularserviceorprovidedirectionbothduringthedayandnight.Signsofdiffering
typesshouldbeconsideredincludingsurfacemountedsigns,projectingsigns,painted
windowsigns,bladesignsandevenpaintedwallsignswhenofanappropriatescaleand
design.Signswithvisualclutter,garishcolors,suburbancharacterorinternalillumination
generallyshouldbeavoided.
ConclusionRecommendationsforimprovementstothearchitecturalassetsofdowntownKewanna
