LINE

• A line can portray characteristics of–• Direction

• Width

• Length

• Focus

• Feeling

• Lines can portray two characteristics: geometric & organic

Organic

ZENTANGLE

• A zentangle is a structured line design using patterns

• Areas are divided and expressive lines are used in each section, creating repetitive patterns

• Zentangles = a planned doodle

Zentangle Vocabulary

• Border – an outline along the outer edges of the tile, enclosing the tangle inside the frame

•Mosaic – the joining of two zentangle tiles to create a larger piece of artwork

• String – a random pencil line that serves as the guide upon which to tangle

• Tangle – the pattern created in a zentangle

• Tile – the area where one creates a zentangle

Let’s Practice Some Patterns….

** Practicing patterns will help you brainstorm designs for your final Zentangle….

- Practice sketching the image in the box below or beside pattern design

Zentangle RubricCriterion Excellent Work Good Work Average Work Needs More Work

Originality &

Creativity

(25) Artwork is unique and

imaginative. 100% use of

patterns throughout design. The

element of line is predominant

in zentangle.

(20) Artwork is unique and

imaginative. 75% use of

patterns throughout design.

The element of line is

consistent in zentangle.

(15) Artwork is unique. 50% use

of patterns throughout design

with emerging ideas. The element

of line is visible in overall piece.

(10) Artwork shows little

imagination. 25% use of patterns

throughout design. The element

of line is visible, however was not

explored.

Craftsmanship

& Skill

(25) Quality of work is excellent.

Materials were used effectively.

A 2 inch border was properly

used around edge of paper.

(20) Quality of work is good.

Materials were used well. A

2 inch border was properly

used around edge of paper.

(15) Quality of work is moderate.

Acceptable material use. A border

is evident, however may not be

the required 2 inches.

(10) Quality of work was poor.

Design shows awkward use of

materials. A border is evident,

however directions of 2 inches

was not followed.

Complexity &

Aesthetics

(25) Work shows excellent

design to form a highly complex

piece. Many areas draw interest.

100% use of strings in project to

section Zentangle were used.

Decision-making and planning is

evident. Project objectives were

met.

(23) Work shows a good design

to form a moderately-high

complex piece. Some areas

draw interest. Use of strings in

80% of zentangle were used to

section areas. Some decision-

making and planning was used.

Project objectives were mostly

met.

(18) Work shows a medium-low

level of creativity with too few

details. Zentangle design has some

areas to draw interest to viewer.

Use of strings in 70% of zentangle

were used to section areas.

Planning for design was minimal.

Project objectives were partially

met.

(10) Work shows a low level of

complexity. Design was overly

simple and has little to draw

interest to a viewer. Use of

strings is 50% or less in zentangle

to section areas. Very little

planning was done. Project

objective was minimally met.

Effort (25) Student put forth their best

effort with minimal time wasted.

All pencil marks are erased and

composition is clean. Design was

accomplished with patience,

efficiency, and neatness.

(20) Student put forth a good

amount of effort with minimal

time wasted. Most pencil marks

are erased and composition is

mostly clean. Student worked

efficiently and neatly.

(15) Student put forth some

effort, with some time or

materials wasted. About half of

pencil marks are erased and

composition is half-way clean.

Design needs just a few more

touch-ups or details.

(10) Student put forth little to no

effort, wasting class time and/or

materials. Very little to no pencil

marks were erased and

composition is a bit

smudged/messy. Design is greatly

underdeveloped.

So how do I complete a zentangle??

How To Start a Zentangle -

1. Draw a 2” border from the edge of your paper

- It is very common to use a square shape,

however your zentangle can be any shape

you prefer (outline of an octopus, circle, etc.)

2. Draw strings using a pencil- Strings are lines that divide the border shape

into sections

4. Repeat with each section- Work in each section of your

zentangle, changing the pattern

3. Begin working in one section

- Fill each section with a repetitive pattern

5. Outline your zentangle- Using a black Sharpie marker and/or

black pen, be sure to outline all your lines

6. Clean up pencil marks- With an eraser carefully erase any

pencils marks not covered by the Sharpie.

- If there are any pencil smudge marks

around the border area of your zentangle,

carefully erase marks as well
