From the Library.. Last minute Premier’s Reading Challenge finishers for 2010 are: Lilly G 2G, Olivia B 5H, Lachlan T 6HD and Emily G 6L. 180 students completed the Challenge. 25 Gold award winners will be published in the newsletter prior to Literacy Day in Term 4. 36.7% of the school’s student population completed the Challenge which was an improvement on last year’s effort. The most successful grade was Yr 3 with 47.6%, followed by Kindergarten with 44.6% and Yr 2 with 43.5%. Yr 6 improved on their efforts with 4.1% in 2009 to 21.4% this year. The best classes overall were 1/2SH with 88% of stu-dents successfully completing the Challenge followed by KGreen 59%, 4/5S 50%, 3B 48.3%, 3J 46.6% and 2G with 40.7%. The Premier’s Reading Challenge has been proven to increase literacy levels and ensure that students are exposed to, and reading rich language texts so continued improvement is our goal for next year. It would be wonderful to think we could get to 50% in 2011. Those who read – succeed

We Are Still Taking Enrolments in All Grades for 2011 All students 4 1/2 to 6 years of age are entitled to enrol in Kindergarten for next year. At Eleebana Public School, we have decided to group our young Kindergarten students together in one class for 2011, in addition to our mainstream Kinder Classes. If you have a child eligible to enrol for school in 2011, or know of anyone who has a child(ren) for enrolment in Kinder to Year 6, could you please direct them to the office for details. All families who have registered for 2011 should have received their ‘Application to Enrol’ forms by now. If you haven’t, please contact the school office as soon as possible.

A Student Work Sample from 5M can be found on page 7 If you have any concerns or issues relating to your child(ren) or school matters in general I would be pleased to discuss these with you.

EXPERIENCE ANOTHER CULTURE BRING HOME A BROTHER OR A SISTER In January 2011, students aged 15 – 18 years, from over 20 countries will be arriving in Australia to study at local schools for 2-10 months. Opportunities exist to act as a host family in a volunteer/unpaid capacity. Hosting can be on a temporary, short or long term basis. Host families help provide our students with the chance to study and experience life in Australia. This is a great way to learn about another country and culture, establish a lifelong link to a family in another country and contribute to international goodwill. If your family can offer a friendly, supportive and caring home environment, contact us today. To learn more about this opportunity call Student Exchange Australia New Zealand on 1300 135 331 or visit our website. http://studentexchange.org.au/

Peace Day The United Nations designated Peace Day is 21 September. This was established in 2001, through the efforts of Jeremy Gilley and his Peace One Day initiative. Eleebana Public School will commit to world Peace Day this year, by holding a special day of activities on Wednesday 22 September. This will be an out of uniform “White Shirt Day”. Everyone is asked to wear a white shirt, or dress all in white. There will be a gold coin collection to support the Peace One Day initiative. All children will participate in special creative arts and other activities, to highlight the importance of peace, not only globally, but also locally, and within our own minds. There is a highly inspiring and informative nine minute film summary about how Jeremy Gilley’s idea for International Peace Day came to be a reality. To view, go to: http://bit.ly/demCD2, or for the main website, go to: www.PeaceOneDay.org The specific page on the website where you can see a short film about Peace One Day in schools can be found at www.peaceoneday.org/en/takeaction/in-the-classroom
