Enclosures of just about every shape andsize can be found on the Pheonix-Mecano stand. The Bopla range ispredominantly ABS and polycarbonate.Included in the vast range are modularsystems that allow customised productsto be created from a wide choice ofmodular components. For metalenclosures, the company is offering theRose range that can be supplied inaluminium and stainless steel.

The method of locating the coveron the latest Rose series of enclosures

offers enhanced protection of sensitiveelectronic contacts. The fixing channelsare on the outside of the case. Thismeans any shards of metal scrappedfrom the cover fall outside rather theinside the enclosure.

Profiled recessions inside theenclosure allow for wall fixings orconnection between several enclosures.Three sizes are available and a specialEMC seal can be specified for sensitiveassemblies.

Alongside it's established shockabsorbers, Ace Controls Internationalwill be showing two new product rangesthat increase the options for designengineers looking to control the motion ofmoving elements on virtually any type ofprocess machine or materials handlingsystem.

The first system, called LOCKED,offers clamping or braking on linearslides and rotary machine elements. Oneversion is aimed at piston and cylinderrods while another is targeted at rotaryapplications such as drive shafts. The

clamping function locks in a solid positionfor, inspection, machining, connections orassembly. The braking function canprovide emergency stops over a muchgreater distance than the traditional endposition stop. This means a morecontrolled deceleration.

The second new product range is“SLAB” absorption pads. These arenormally supplied in sheet form and canbe cut, shaped, punched and assembledusing readily available adhesives.Available in 12 and 25mm thickness, theyare manufactured from micro-cellularpolyurethane. The material does notdissipate energy, rather it uses the energyto compress the cell structure which thenreturns back to its elastic state. Differentgrades have a rebound resistance of 12 –20% and 50 – 60 % while the operatingtemperatures range is -30oC to +70oC.The materials are approved for use in thefood industry.

With exceptionally low coil powerrequirements, the new range of interfaceplug-in relays from Tyco Electronics areclaimed to be the most power savingrelays in their class. Only 400mW isdrawn by the dc coil version and 750 mVAfor the ac version.

P.I. Castings has exhibited at everySouthern Manufacturing since the showstarted. 2006 proved a busy year andcapacity for precision investment castingshas been increased to satisfy growingdemand. These two facts are notunconnected.

Investment castings offer precisecontrol of dimensions and complexforms. They are currently producing inaluminium, steel, special alloy materials,brass and bronze.

The process lends itself to rapidprototyping and relatively low volumes.Such parts are currently being producedfor the Boeing 787 and Airbus A380 andA400. Other users who recognise theadvantages of the process includemedical applications, missilecomponents and safety equipment for theprocess industries.

There willbe almost 15,000 different types and sizesto chose from. This will include a 'Lite'range of compression springs developedfor light load applications.

Four new “Workshop” Engineers’Spring kits have been added. These arepopular with both Research andDevelopment and maintenancedepartments where they provide instantaccess to a selection of types and sizes ofsprings for either product developmentor machine repair.

All types of springs are stockedincluding compression, extension andtorsion springs. Additionally, instrumentsprings are now available as well ascontinuous length springs and batterysprings introduced this year.

Vero Technologies has created a new'Fast-Track' manufacturing cell wherealuminium front panels for 19in rackingand cPCI can be manufactured in just 72hours. This can include assembled withhandles and all insets and, if required,plastic overlays. Overlays are popularwhen a high quality finish is required forapplications where there is high fingertraffic.

Within the manufacturing cell arefacilities for high-speed milling, lasercutting of plastic overlays and multi-colour silkscreen printing.

Outside the Fast-Track arena,production is guaranteed to meet a three-week delivery schedule.

New at the show will be standardIEEE “Advanced TCA” aluminium frontpanels complete with handles. These can

be machined with customer specifiedcutouts that can be supplied as a dxf file.Artwork can also be created and printed.

The company also suppliesprototyping boards, loop terminalassemblies, pins and extender boards aswell as IBM PCI brackets. All are availableex-stock and can be purchased by creditcard.

Fast-track service for front panels


With a name like Hymid Multi-Shot, itdoesn't take a genius to work out thisexhibitor specialises in high volumeplastic components using multi-shotinjection moulding machines for overmoulding and insert moulding. Multi-shot moulding also introduces thepossibility of producing two colourmouldings in a single operation.

The company has all the in-houseresources for design and manufacture ofboth single and multi-shot tooling. UsingSolidworks and AutoCAD designsoftware, customer concepts can bequickly converted into 3D models.Moulds 570 x 570 mm weight up to 1.6tonne can be handled.

Name spells out the game


A new automatic electroless nickel-goldline has just been installed atEurocircuits. This follows on from anonline survey of customers that revealedmore than 55% opted for nickel-gold over

electroless silver. This is part of a fivemillion Euro investment over the last twoyears to meet demand for Eurocircuits’online prototype and small batch seriesPCB services.

The online service has proved highlysuccessful across Europe and is achievingannual growth rates in excess of 40%. Thisservices permits users to get prices,confirm delivery and progress ordersdirectly off the website. All jobs are 100%CAM verified before being entered into thesystem.

Pooling technology is used tocombine orders onto standard productionpanels to ensure the lowest possible pricefor prototypes and low volume work. Thiseliminates tooling and set-up charges.

The company sees the flexible rapidresponse to low volume requirements as amarket sector where Europeanmanufacturers have the edge over the FarEast volume producers. If you want to seehow it works in practice you can try it outon the stand.

Customer survey dictates investment


Ever since Southern Manufacturing2006, GNJ Sheetmetal has been underincreasing pressure to increaseproduction capacity to satisfy demandscreated by enquiries taken at the show.

The delivery earlier this year of anAmada CNC turret press, with it's 2.5 by1.25m sheet handling capacity, has

contributed to shorter lead times andimproved productivity. It is supported byfull computer aided programming withfull nesting facilities. The cost savinggenerated have been passed on toclients which has lead to a virtuousspiral of more enquiries

The latest additional capacity onlyinstalled last month was an AmadaQuattro laser-cutting machine that canhandle up to 8 mm steel.

Although the company can handlelarger sheet, the bulk of its work is fineprecision components manufacturedfrom 3mm and under sheet.

Show boosts growth atsubcontractor


Following a management buyout threeyear ago, and a major investmentprogramme of over £1.5 million atransformation has taken place at NorthEast Subcontractors Barker CollinsEngineering. Originally it was a generalsub-contractors today it specialises in thehigh precision end of heavy engineering.

It is on target to increase annualturnover from £2m to £3m this financialyear. This has been achieved by focusingon low volume, high quality products suchas marine gearboxes. It has fabricationfacilities for up to 5 tonne single lifts

The machine shop features a newsix-axis CNC horizontal machine and

CNC machining centres that can hit fivefaces of a large component in a singlesetting. This not only speeds upthroughput but also errors that can creepin large components when establishingnew datums for each setting. Atemperature-controlled environment hasbeen created for a CNC co-ordinatemeasuring machine that can measure ± 3micron over a 2 m cube.

The company does not see the same levelof off-shore competition encountered inother subcontracting sectors. It saystransport becomes a major issue whenmoving large one-off components halfwayaround the world. Since the take-over, ithas spread further afield in the U.K.current customers range from the Northof Scotland to the South Coast.

PCB Train offer a manufacturing servicefor PCB’s, which it says, introduces majorcost and delivery benefits for thecustomer. The secret lies in the word“Train” in its name. The production is runlike a train schedule with “departures”and “arrivals” at fixed times.

In conventional production,scheduling is orientated around thecustomer. Usually each batch isscheduled into a variable productioncycle. Contrast this with PCB Train whereeverything is focused around the board. Acustomer books his “seat” on board theboard and sends in the relevant data toarrive before the board “departure” time.Several customers will have reservationson the same board. The important thing isyou only pay for the part of the board youuse. Like a shuttle service, if a board isfull, another one will be put on.

Using this system the company

can offer a 24-hour turn around forurgent prototypes at competitive prices.There is even an online quotation systemwhere customers can work out their owncosts. To give an idea, a Eurocard double-sided PCB costs from £45 inclusive ofsolder resist, legend, photo-plotting andall tooling.

For anyone who uses PCB's insmall to medium volumes, this has got tobe worth checking out.

Things falling off can have various degreesof impact from mild embarrassment to amajor catastrophe. Either way it’s bestavoided. That’s what Nord-Lockguarantees with its unique bolt lockingsystem. Tests have proved it is moreeffective than any other system - evenwhen only tightened to 25% of yield point.

Unlike many systems, the lockingis achieved by tension on the bolt rather

than friction. Nord-Lockcomprises of a pair of washerswith a wedge locking system.The rise of the cams betweenthe washers is greater thanthe pitch of the thread. Thisincreases tension on the boltwhen the thread moves in theloosening direction.

In addition to the cams,there are radial teeth on theouter faces (top and bottom).

These grip and seat onto the matingsurfaces.

Because it is not dependent onfriction, there is no loss of performancewhen lubricated. In fact it isrecommended that the cam faces arelubricated and re-used. Typically Nord-Lock can be reused five times.

Through the openness of thePICMG MicroTCA standard, combinedwith the AMC module sizes, it is possibleto create a wide range of configurations.These are particularly suited to telecomsapplications such as base stations andinternal telecommunications networksfor companies. The flexibility also makes

the system attractive to industrialapplications that combine highperformance requirements with pricesensitive demands.

The small Pico or cube systemcompete with today's IPC and embeddedcomputer solutions with the benefit ofmodularity levels not currently possible.Components available include subtracks,backplanes, power supplies and frontpanels.

With the system, existing operatorsystems and user software can be used.MicroTCA offers reduced lead times fornew developments.

Modular system forsmaller controls



Flat sheet metal partscan be producedrelatively cheaply. It'swhen they have to betransformed into 3Dcomponents such asboxes, instrument casesand enclosures that thecosts start piling on. Alltoo often these areformed on manually-fedpress-brakes that haveto be set for each bend.

Not at BrightonSheet Metal where anAmada robotic bendingcell has been installed.This automated system offers precisionforming allied with exceptionalproduction rates. Automating theprocess dramatically improves qualityand consistency. The system is capableof full “lights out” running.

To ensure that the high qualitystandards are maintained through-outfinishing, new phosphating equipmenthas been installed. This uses non-toxic

environ-mentally friendly chemicals.Subsequent improvements in paintadhesion are reflected in enhancedcorrosion resistance measured at over260 hrs in salt spray tests.

The paint spray facilities have alsobeen upgraded with more efficient sprayguns with finer spray that results in bettercoverage with less waste.

Automation tacklesforming costs

On the Cherry Electrical Products standthe wraps will be coming off a brand newswitch that offers exceptional standard ofreliability and a solid state sinking outputusing Hall-effect technology. The switchwas tested for more than 110 millioncycles. This compares with the 1 millioncycles usual for testing non-Hall sensormechanical snap switches.

The switches are available withlever, roller and simulated rolleractuators. They deliver a supply voltagebetween 4.5 and 24v and a maximumsupply current of 15 mA. The operatingtemperature range is -40oC to +85oC.Applications include pedal position,joystick position and end-of-travelsensing as well as door/lid interlocks.

Other switches in the range includedoor, seat, console controls, andintelligent door latch & lock systems. Therange has been expanded to take in speedand proximity sensors, electronic ovencontrols and cook top sensors. Think of the intricacy and complex detailcombined with excellent surface finishthat can be achieved on a plasticmoulding. Done that? Now think of thestrength, toughness and wearingproperties of steel. Done that? Now putthe two together and there you have it;Metal Injection Moulding or MIM. This isthe name of both the process and theexhibitor.

Just like plastic mouldings mostMIM components do not require anyfurther machining either for finish oraccuracy. Again like plastics, the processintroduces the possibility of combiningseveral parts into a single moulding. Forexample a small bracket for the A 380that comprised 11 pieces was producedas a single MIM.

Carrying on with the analogy withplastics, it is possible to produce shapesnot achievable by another processes. Asa rule of thumb, the more complex the

design the more economicallyadvantageous MIM becomes.

Those of us who are sufficientlylong in the tooth can remember theimmense freedom that plastic mouldingsintroduced for designers and the myriadof new opportunities that the processopened up. MIM is at that emergent stageright now. For any designer this is a standthat you simply cannot afford to miss.

Getting the best of both worlds



2006 was a good year for Steel ServiceCentre. It started with new officesopening up in Sunderland in January; itclosed with a new Byspeed laser cuttingmachine being installed in December.This machine can accelerate the axes atrates up to 3G making it 30% faster thanits predecessor. It features a constantlaser power of up to 4.4 kWh. This bringsthe total invested over the last couple ofyears to over £2m.

This is the fourth laser cuttingmachine to be installed. Previousmachines include the largest tube cuttinglaser installed in the UK. This can handle

tubes up to 320mm in diameter. Thelatest software enables the complexesangular cutting paths to be calculatedfor angled joints of dissimilar sizedmaterials.

A laser inspection machine thatslashes 95% of the time to manuallyinspect a part backs up all the profile

cutting technology.

In the last year the company hasachieved rapid growth, but there is nogreat secret behind the success, thefocus has been value, quality and service.Nothing is taken for granted andcustomers are regularly surveyed foreverything from speed of answering thephone to standard of customer care. Theresults are published for all to see. Wantto know the results? 78% are happy withthe speed of answering the phone; ajackpot 100% for customer care.

Investment underpinssuccess

The growing sophistication of the resinsused for electronic assembly andmanufacturing means that the productscan be tailored to precisely match theperformance required by specificapplications. Intertronics will beshowing the Dymax range which is afamily of products that can be used asadhesives, encapsulates, potting,sealants and for masking at variousstages of the manufacturing process.

The time taken to UV cureadhesives can be measured in seconds,this greatly simplifies use and results inhigh on-site performance. The “On

demand” nature of UV curing means thatre-working as a result of adhesivesmigrating onto solder pads or through ahole is eliminated.

They are ideal for bonding heatsinks and heat sensitive components.Also they can be used for wire andcomponent tacking and securing hand-inserted components prior to wavesoldering.

In addition, they can easily beremoved for field repair then re-applied.


It's appropriate that Simtek EMS is basedon the coast at Margate, as this is oneelectronics subcontractor who wants tostem the tide of work heading off-shore

to low cost manufacturing centres. Aspart of its fight-back, it has worked hardto integrate lean principles to allprocesses while controlling overheads.

Amongst the many OEM products on theR.A. Rodriguez stand is a new range ofbearings that open up some promising

prospects for design engineers.There are many occasions whendesigners opt for bushes overbearings simply because there isinsufficient wall thickness in thehousing to incorporate ball orroller bearings. The shaft cannotbe smaller and there areconstraints on the housingoutside dimensions.

Visitors will see the Kaydonseries of Reali-Slim and Ultra-Slim bearings, which have an

exceptionally thin cross-section. Theseare available in both metric and imperialsizes.

Also of interest to designers will bethe range of linear motion products.These are available as individualcomponents right through to completeturnkey solutions. Expansion at theGerman production facilities has greatlyincreased the capacity to design,manufacture and assemble customisedsolutions.

Other OEM products on offerinclude power transmission equipmentsuch as ballscrews, gears and racks,shaft supports & blocks as well asconveyor equipment.

Three aspects of assembly identification:label creation, printing and security willbe highlighted on the Panduit Europestand. At the beginning of the process,Easy-Mark labelling software has beenenhanced by adding a Bar Code Wizard.

The wizard generates bar codesthat can conform to a number ofsymbologies. Such bar codes eliminatethe need for manual entry of informationand ensure less labour intensive andmore reliable data collection.

The thermal transfer desktopprinter on the stand is capable ofproducing component labels, safety andfacility markers and self-laminating heatshrink & vinyl cloth cable markers. It hasa 300 dpi print resolution and ensuresdurable clear printing of labels.

For maximum security, the PELtamper-evident polyester labels are

recommended. This approach highlightsif a label has been removed by leavingbehind a checkerboard of silver materialwhen the label is removed.

Also on show will be a hand-heldprinter, which has a cut-to-length featurethat can reduce label wastage by up to40%. Up-dates can be uploaded from awireless PC or laptop.

Boom period for visionsystems

Vision systems are growing insophistication with many performanceenhancing software developments. At thesame time the hardware costs are falling.Put these two facts together and it's notdifficult to see why there has been anexponential growth in new applications.

At the show, Multipix Imaging willbe highlighting some of the diverseapplications that are economically viabletoday. The applications underline boththe speed and accuracy that can beachieved. For example, when assessingink-jet printer cartridges, tiny parts areinspected at rates of over 4,000pieces/min. For the automotive industryimperfections less than 0.3mm diametercould be identified in laser weldingseams.

For the food process industry, achocolate manufacturing plant usesvision to monitor whether products arecut to the correct length and have beencoated sufficiently. In a brewery, visionsystems ensure all crates and boxes ofcanned drinks contain the correct amountof product.

As a rule of thumb, if a camera cansee a visual image, then it is a primecandidate for a vision system to carry outa 100% accurate inspection process. Ifyou're currently struggling with a qualityissue, then this stand should be on youragenda, you’ll be surprised at what is nowpossible.

The module is designed toensure availability of all durable andconsumable tools and ancillaryequipment that are needed to produceany scheduled batch of components.These are usually delivered to themachine as a pre-kitted tooling package.This can dramatically reduce machinedowntime between different batches.

PSL is a rapid estimating system,which defines all aspects of productioncontrol, scheduling of subcontractservices, process control, stock andmaterial inventories. A full transactionhistory stored in the system results inlevels of traceability required to meetaerospace requirements without anyadditional input.

Tool managementsoftware unveiled

Savings of up to 50% in the time taken togenerate cutter toolpaths are achievedwith the latest version of EdgeCAM, theadvanced off-line programming system.This will be seen for the first time on thePathtrace stand.

Designated EdgeCAM 11.5, itfurther expands the simultaneous multi-axis machining strategies withimprovement in the system's five axiscapabilities. The programming ofmachines is streamlined with standard orcomplex table configurations. Five-axisroughing is a new feature addressing themachining requirements of industriessuch as the aerospace and automotive.

The enhanced Rest Finishing cycleputs the focus on optimising toolpathgeneration. There is a new strategy thatautomatically selects the appropriatetoolpath for steep or shallow finishingoperations.

Sale” where buyers andsellers are connected. It wasLightning Packaging role toensure all the unwantedtreasures hidden in attics etc.found their way from A to Band arrived in pristinecondition.

For fragile shipmentsa combination of reinforcedcardboard carton and bubblewrap was used. It's safe tosay all the goods arrived inthe same condition they left.

Staff at Lightning havenot been seduced by the bright lights andglamour of TV and will be at the showhighlighting the more everyday packagingapplications currently supplied to theautomotive, pharmaceutical and theelectronics industries.


Packaging is a star turn

Cost per component is by far the bestway of evaluating any machine tool.Two major factors contribute to thisfigure; the cost of the machine, andtherefore machine hour rate, andcycle time. Again two major factorscontribute to cycle time; machiningtime and non-machining time.

Machining time is largelydictated by tooling and, assumingreasonable rigidity, should be more orless similar on all machines. Non-machining time is that part of thecycle when tools are positioned.Here, machine design can make asignificant contribution to minimisingproduction costs.

This is where the TM6 CNClathe on the Hurco stand scores. The

Different types of disc springs aremanufactured by Bauer Springs whoalso offer an advisory service on how their unique capabilities can be exploited. With conventionalcompression springs there is aproportional linear force/deflectionrelationship. Any deflection variationresults in a significant increase ordecrease in the applied force.

With disc springs, on the otherhand, the preloaded settings change verylittle within a wide range of deflection.Disc springs are usually used in stacks,these may be stacked in series orparallel or a combination of both. Whenstacked in parallel, the springs forceincrease in ratio to the number of stacks.

Hysteresis, a measure of damping,increases in proportion to the number ofsprings stacked in parallel. Vibrationscan be caused which can damage thebearing contact surfaces this can bedamped by multiple discs, stacking inparallel.

Disc spring have a small springdeflection coupled with a high springload. Far greater deflection series stacksare used. For greater loads parallelstacks are used. Because the springperformance is precise, it is possible toconfigure a combination to exactly satisfya requirement. Any designer who hasnever used disc springs should check itout.

Today, manufacturers are seeking a more committed, long-term partnership with their suppliers. A partnership that isbased on risk sharing and shared product development. And,above all, mutual trust. This creates a partnership that worksto the benefit of both.

For the buyer there are the obvious benefits of tapping into expertise that may not be readily available in-house,combined with spreading the financial load. It’s not all onesided, the supplier benefits include locking the work in, andinsulating it from Global competitors.

Press tool design is another area where the supplier canmake a significant contribution to productivity. Also, companies thatspecialise in laser cutting, metalforming & fabrication and allthe metal finishing processes will be highlighting their

expertise.With all this expertise to draw on, the exhibition

WHERE TO FIND THERIGHT SUPPLIER

The obvious appeal of “one-hitmachining” is spreading according toYamazaki Mazak who will be showing theIntegrex, multi-function turning centre.This features twin 6,000 rev/min spindlescombined with an upper rotary toolspindle incorporating an automatic toolchanger. There is also a lower, ninestation, drum turret to dramaticallyreduce cycle times.

Originally such machines reallyonly appealed to manufacturers of verycomplex parts. Today, things havechanged as many SME’s who producemore prosaic parts have realised they toocan reap the benefits.

Second op turning,with its associated manualloading, can often accountfor 70-80% of the totalproduction time and onlyadd 20% to the componentvalue. Factor in theadditional time saved byincorporating third opmilling, then the economicjustification for one-hitmachining on even simplerwork becomes over-whelming. This trend is only accelerated by the subcontractors’ custo-mers; more and more theyare demanding, deliveryschedules that can only bemaintained with one hitmachining.

Growing demand for“one-hit machining”


Many manufacturers are looking to outsource or subcontract major facets of their business. That in itself is not new; what is new is the radically changingrelationship that is evolving between the manufacturer and the subcontractor.

In the past, the buyer/supplier relationship was primarily based on price, quality and delivery.
